But i would differ from Sharninder's view, its just that bengalis, mostly

OTOH i had been to pune's LUG, there the conversation used to be almost
allways in english. But sometimes an excited animated puneri conversation
would break up between me and a new guy sitting next to me. Nods, smiles
and sharing of the excitement usually got the message across.

I wouldn't agree with that though. I think Bengalis (a lot of them to be precise) have outstanding conversational skills when it comes to a language which isn't Bangla. If you're in doubt, you can meet me and my friends and you'll know what I'm trying to say.
