Do a hdparm -i /dev/hda and see the DMA mode information. Check the * which
indicates active mode.


If you are in UDMA mode, I guess there is nothing much to worry about. You are
already getting best mode.


And turn on the DMA..

hdparm -i /dev/hda shows UDMA mode 2 (*udma2) as active and other modes 0 to 4
as available. Also DMA modes (mdma) 0 to 2 are avilable.


hdparm /dev/hda shows DMA is already turned on (=1). And IO_support shows the
default (=0, 16 bit).


Do I need to edit /etc/sysconfig/harddisks ? I haven't touched this file since I
installed Redhat 9 on my Pentium-III 550MHz box with 192 MB RAM. And believe
me, it is *dog* slow and also my i-ball mouse freezes up often once in a while.
Please let me know if there's something important that I need to learn.
