I have Athlon XP2000+ with Asus mobo(some number ending with 266) and I get 
200MB+ps and 32 MBps respectively.

If you have 7200RPM, then the results would be hell better. The maxtor one in 
my office gives me more than 50MBps in later case..

I would say be content with hdparm -d1 type. Don't fiddle with -u settings. 
They are unnecessarily dangerous..
