Actually you will find that the basic reason is that qmail has been around as a secure alternative back when sendmail had some serious security issues.


If you are setting up something new get postfix or exim. Easier, and you don't have to sit and patch the code to make it do anything even remotely useful beyond just sending / receiving email (stuff like smtp auth, TLS etc).
