Writing a PAM module is an interesting idea, but won't autofs help in this? I remember using it to NFS-mount home directories, but don't know if it can SMB-mount. If autofs cannot handle SMB-mounting, one could use a CIFS-NFS gateway like Microsoft SFU along with autofs. The proposed setup would ultimately become a nightmare to administer, I suppose.
