This I suppose is a matter of opinion. However, I have faced the
following problems with spaces in filenames:

a) There is a tendency to go overboard with the flexibility and
at times people start putting full sentences for filenames.
Look at the mp3 naming conventions for example a name like:
"where do you go to my lovely little sweetie pie.mp3" ;-)

b) It plays havoc with web programming. Even under asp you need
   to do things like new%2520text%2520document.txt

c) Not handled by most ftp servers. Doing an scp for a "spaced-
out" filename is a nightmare ;-)

d) Even M$ osql does not like spaces, and you need to use quotes
   to handle such "spaced-out" things.

And the list goes on ... most drawbacks are technical in
nature, and not restricted to *nix idiosyncracies alone.

I really wonder whether such a feature should really be consi-
dered desirable ...

Just my POV
