Thanx for the input. I know that this has nothing to do with Linux. 
Since it was related with grub. Thought that someone might have 
encountered similar sort of problem. Just eliminating the improbables.

Raghu, Thanx for your information. My hda is 20GB and both hda and hdb
(40GB) are in LBA Mode. May be my win98 sys got lost. Might as well 
reload it. Thanx a heap for the info guys. Ofcourse will wait to see if 
someone had the exact problem. 
And i am able to view the content of all win98 partitions from linux.
