Postfix, Qmail, Exim, Sendmail etc. are MTAs. Courier is a complete mailing solution. If you use Postfix or any of the other MTAs, you need to also install POP/IMAP servers (guess what people usually go for when they choose this option?), an MDA, an authentication framework etc. separately and spend time in integrating these software to the MTA. On the other hand, Courier includes all these pieces and they interact with each other and works just automagically. Much as I hate to say this, the best known "other" software comparable to Courier is MS Exchange - and the only piece missing in Courier is the Outlook connectivity (and that is Microsoft proprietary). But Courier also includes an Email to FAX gateway - which I doubt Exchange has.
