I've got a 5.1 setup, with via on-board sound.(VIA 8237 )

> 2. Are there are special settings that you need to do ?

You shouldn't have to do anything special to get 5.1 sound working

Connect all your speakers in and run the following command

speaker-test -c6 -Dsurround51

You should hear a continuous beep shifting from speaker to speaker in the
following order

  - Front Left
  - Front Right
  - Rear Left
  - Rear Right
  - Center
  - LFE

If you are sure that your speakers are connected right and you only hear the
beep from the front speakers,

start up alsamixer and

toggle the "Spread Front to Surround and Center/LFE" option.

And make sure that the "Downmix" control is set to "Off"

> 3. Are there any special audio connectors ?

Just used the cables that came with the speakers.

toggle the "Spread Front to Surround and Center/LFE" option.

You'll need to turn if off when you want to watch a 5.1 movie/DVD.
