Subject: Setting up Linux on a Compaq Proliant 2500
Date: Fri, 08 Jan 1999 08:57:37 GMT
I'm trying to set up Linux on a Compaq Proliant 2500, but I have insufficient
information about the hardware to do it. The system has two SCSI-controllers
(one onboard, one PCI SMART-2/P) and an onboard network adapter. I'm not sure
which drivers I should be using in the kernel to have support for the devices
present. The onboard SCSI-controller is an NCR-53c875-0 (no problem with that
one), but I don't know which driver to use for the second controller (for the
harddisk). Second, the network adapter. I was told it could be a SMC 810, but
under Linux I can't find a driver for that one. If someone could help me out,
I would be very gratefull.
Thanks!
Arjan

Postgresql comes with most Linux distributions now and it is not too onerous
for users to set up for their own use. There are JDBC drivers for it.
You might also look at xbase. It's nowhere near as flexible as an SQL
server, but it's embedable. Other than that, I don't know of any free Linux
software covering the area between dbm and SQL servers, with the exception
of /rdb type systems. There are a couple of inexpensive commercial ISAM
type databases, though.
I'm using Gadfly for a similar project, but it only works with Python.

This problem is caused by the cpu speed throttling that APM BIOs uses
to lower the power consumption of the CPU. After a certain period
of inactivity the BIOs will make the CPU operate at a lower clock
frequency, or halt it's operation altogether. This greatly affects
the system clock since it counts clock cycles to determine elaspsed
time.
Unlike Win95/DOS, Linux uses the HLT instruction during idle loops
to reduce cpu power consumption, so speed throttling won't reduce
power consumption by much.
You can fix this problem by recompiling your kernel with APM mode
enabled, or you can simply disable CPU speed throttling in your
CMOS setup.
While you are at it, you might want to disable the hard disc
spindown too. The most wear on hard drives occurs during spin
up and spin down.

Bad idea. Try 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.2 and use 255.255.255.0
netmask on both.
The .0 address is reserved to represent the whole network, you
should not use it for a host. And the 192.168.x.y addresses are
reserved for private networks like yours so you don't need to
worry about a conflict if you hook up to the internet.
> Do I need to run ypserv for dns, what about ypbind?
No, you don't need either. Get everything to work with ip
addresses (e.g ping 192.168.1.1) before worrying about dns or
samba.

The cuax ports offer kernel locking when the corresponding ttySx port
is used. Originally, this was for getty and modem dialout programs to share
the same port. Programs such as mgetty OTOH do not use this scheme.
It is now recommended to use the ttySx devices where possible.

My advice, dump /dev/modem. Use only the exact port name you are using.
Standardize on the device typ you are using (eg ttySx).

I've just installed Leafnode. I configured it with no limits set (no maxfetch,
no maxcrosspost, no maxage) apart for initialfetch = 100.
I run fetch -f, everything fine. I run fetch -vv, ok. I run fetch -vv again
after 24h and it downloaded only few articles from all the subscribed groups.
Too few.
To check if it was a problem of the newsserver where I get the news from, I got
the new articles with Agent too (directly from the server) at the same time. The
result is that Agent at the second download got many articles, as always, but
fetch got only a few.
It looks like as Fetch and Agent (and probably other news reader clients) decide
which articles to download with different algorithms. The problem looks to stay
in Fetch's one.
Does anyone know something more about this and can explain me the situation?
Maybe I have to set something...
P.S. I configured Fetch to download news from more than one news server with
"supplement" but it downloads few of them from all the newsserver.
Thanks,

If you want something that is just a basic reference, "Linux in a
Nutshell" from O'Reilly is great. It's basically just a command
reference - you need to have a basic grasp on the system to really use
the Nutshell book.
For more of a tutorial, take a look at
http://metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/docs/LDP/install-guide/ This is Matt
Welsh's Installation and Getting Started Guide. Highly recommended
reading. I downloaded it, then printed it out for reference use. It's
gotten pretty battered, but it gets a lot of use. The other items in
the LDP directory will also be very useful.
For Linux books in general, most anything from O'Reilly would be good.
Pretty much can't go wrong with O'Reilly. And no, I don't work for
them. Just a *very* satisfied customer.
I've been told to avoid any of the Sam's and Que books - from what
little I've seen of those books they seem to follow the adage "Quantity,
not quality". I too bought Slackware Unleashed - it was about 1 1/2
years ago - and was not very impressed. I learned more by messing
around with Linux while looking through the Nutshell book and Welsh's
book.

My problems are unrelated to formats or formatting. I like to roll my
own filters so I know exactly what's going on. The lpr spooling/filter
process seems to be working. /dev/lp1 doesn't. I can copy an otherwise
correct file to /dev/lp1 and it never successfully prints.

Same here with Slackware 3.5. I use it for my work which means I only
have to reboot to Windows to convert everything to Word (about once a

The display problem might be fixed by fiddling around with Ctrl-Alt-(+) or

I have some more Emacs questions that I am hoping you guys can answer:
1) How do you use the metakey in Microsoft Hyperterminal? Right now, it is
"mapped" a the Alt key, but the alt key hits the menubar in Hyperterminal
rather than sending it out to my Linux machine
2) How do you go into "replace" mode in

3) I am using it in C++ mode. Is there an easy way to compile your
code and run it in a sub-window without leaving Emacs?
4) Emacs has certain "menus" within it called "Buffers Files Tools Edit Search

You should have a mini-HOWTO on enabling quotas, its location is (hopefully)
/usr/doc/HOWTO/mini/Quota
Otherwise you can read it from the web...eg

Just as a sidenote, if you plan on printing one or more page in color every

beating every color inkjet in quality. Also laser printers are much less

Microsoft is not under accusation because of being bad to customers,
but because of illegal means for fighting competition. And of course
the case was brought to help Microsoft's rivals. They are the damaged
party of the alleged business practices. Of course it helps them if
Microsoft is restricted to fighting them by legal means.

And how many percent of those customers do you think have read the
Sherman Antitrust Act and have the legal competence to make an
educated guess about whether Microsoft might be in violation of it?
> But not to worry, there is a contingency plan in place regardless

Sure. After all, if third parties can offer products removing the
Internet Explorer from Windows 98, certainly Microsoft can do so as
well if forced to do so. If necessary, by paying the author of the
appropriate tools a few million dollars if they are to stupid to
figure out themselves how Windows 98 works. Would be one of their
cheapest strategic acquisitions, to be sure.
Long live Microsoft.

Did you include Ramdisk when you built the kernel ? I've seen the same

You could also look where the kernel wants the root by issuing: rdev zxxxx,
where zxxxx is the kernel name. I dont know the device name of your

the kernel on your desktop scsi /dev/scd1. Change with

Question from a newbie:
When you make installation floppys from DOS, you usually use RAWRITE to
transfer an image file.
How do I make the reversed proces ? That is, having a Linux floppy with
some boot code at sector 0 and a number of files on it, transfering to one
single file, and filling what needed to make an 1.474.560 large image ?
Using tar or what ?

I have some strange problems with my partitions and am trying to decipher
the
bytes in the partition table to figure out what's wrong. I once came across
a
website which included the low-level layout of a partition table but darned
if I can find
it again. Can anyone direct me? Thanks.

An old Dorothy Parker quote is appropriate. "The masses are asses".

Autodesk has abandoned development on every platform except Win32.
Your best alternative is Microstation. They have an "academic" version of an
older release for about $200 (it's not officially supported) and they told me they
would consider an official release should there be demand for it.
