It can be either, or both. I use it via telnet most of the time since
I'm using OS/2 as my main desktop, and I beam over to the Linux PPro if
I need to look up or confirm information to answer a question.

Again, X software will run locally and remotely as an X client on your
local X server. If you only have one box, it'll be local.

So I think that I can convince my wife to start using
Linux (and get rid of that darn Win95 partition I've
hanging around) if only I can provider her with a
version of the game Freecell that runs on Linux. I
actually found one with the KDE distribution, but
guess what: she doesn't like it because the UI is more
difficult than on windows. (Actually she's right, in the
windows version it's much easier to move the cards
around and such.) Anyhow, does anyone know
where I might find this game?
Thanks

Hello,
I'm sorry to say this but there is no way you can undelete a file on
UNIX unless
you've modified your 'rm' command to put the files in "trashcan"
directory temporarily
which I assume you've not done.

I have the same configuration (printer and distribution). I have
magicfilter installed, and everyting works fine for me. Here's my printcap
entry, if it's any help:
lp|lj|hplj4l|HP Laserjet 4L:\

Obviously, I'm using the filters for the LaserJet 4L. I'm not sure if
there are any separate filters for the 5 and 6 series, but these work just
fine.

Walter,
Hmm, that doesn't sound good. If the wrong drivers were used, then shouldn't
eth0 show up during boot and give some error message. I don't even get a
messag, infact eth0 isn't even showing up during boot. I also replaced the SMC
ultra card with a new 3COM and the same thing happens. I think its because
I didn't recompile the kernel to use any ethernet modules. Thanks anyway.

Subject: Combining Drives?
Date: Tue, 16 Mar 1999 18:05:49 -0600
In AIX it is possible to create storage volumes consisting of multiple
drives so that a single mount point appears to be the combined size of all
the drives in the volume group (e.g., a df on a 3 10GB volume group would
show 30GB).
How is this done with Linux? I want to combine several drives to form a
large area to hold databases. Any tips, please post!
TIA!

I think thats a misunderstanding what a productive desktop should do.
Of course its
not going to write your report, but its aim is to intergrate different
applications
(wordprocessors, spreadsheets, drawing & presentation programs from
different vendors/programmers) consistently so you can
work more easily and efficiently with them.
Personally I havent felt the need for such an integration (xemacs (*)
is all the integration
_I_ need) and StarOffice, on the other hand, tries to be a complete
desktop itself (do everything in one place).

You may be unaware that, unlike DOS, Linux does NOT look for an executable
file in the current working directory before it searches the path. You get
around
this by either adding the directory to the path or by specifying the
directory name
on the command line, e.g.,
$ ./<filename>

Mine has always done that too. It seems that the input and output gain on the
card get set to maximum when it's initialized. If you have a mixer program that
lets you adjust the gain settings, turn them down. You don't need them set that
high. If, on the other hand, your card doesn't have adjustable gain, I don't
know what to tell you. (Other than, if you hear noises that vary with what
you're doing on your computer, disable your microphone input when you're not
using a microphone.)

Probably 64MB is enough for all your processes to fit in. Thats not so
strange.
If you want it to use the swap file, try running all your applications
at the same time, Netscape 4.5 is a good thing: it uses 27MB at once.

I almost have Netatalk completely installed, but can't connect to the

Appleshare, and my volume shows up. I double click my server, and I
proceed to enter my username and password. Then, the connection fails,
and get the message,
"The connection to this server has been unexpectedly broken"
I checked my passwd file, permissions, and still can't find anything
wrong. I am running Appleshare Client 3.8.x. My linux system is Redhat
5.2, and I'm running Netatalk version 1.4b2. Anybody have any clues
what I'm doing wrong? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I'll be installing Redhat 5.1 over the weekend from a CD. I am extermly
interested in software development and would to try and create programs for
Linux and introduce more people to Linux - assuming I like it that is. I'm
confident that'll be able to do the partition correctly. I'm sick of all
the useless junk on my hard drive (I know some of you are thinking
Windows), and am just going to format it and create the partition. I'm
running Windows 95, Office 97, some development tools -VBasic, JDK, and
VC++ - and of course browsers. How much memory should I have for Redhat
and how much for Windows 95? Are there any tips for making the W95
installation compact? On a side note, what type of development tools are
available for use with Linux? Hopefully this posting will be of use to
other newbies as well.

It's not so much Red Hat, but RHAD, and of course the huge Gnome
crowd. There are only half a dozen full-time programmers on Gnome, but
at least 250 volunteers have CVS commit rights, too.
Crashes and other flakiness can be avoided by compiling Gnome
yourself. The beast has got so many dependencies, it's really worth
the effort of compiling it from scratch. Since all of Gnome configures
with autoconf, compiling it is as easy as "./configure
--prefix=/opt/gnome && make && make install".
So far, I haven't had stability problems with Gnome, but I'm
everything but an intensive user of it.
