You have the same sound card I do..go to runlevel 3 by pressing keys
(ctrl+alt+F3) and the system will switch to RL 3..You will be prompted
to type in root, then your root password..After that, type in, sndconfig
and you will enter the sound configuration program..Follow
instructions..It will try to configure it and if sucessful play some
sound..If not it will prompt you to enter dma's IRQ's and I/O's..
When you have it configured, just type in, shutdown -r now ,and the
computer will reboot, hopefully with sound..After that you will have to
enable your system sounds...Good Luck,
JP

You can also use Windblows to achieve the same effect :-) Making Linux more
compatible with retarded standards makes it less.. unix-like (or worthy).
I have not used isapnp, I assume it works with PCI cards as well and I hope
it avoids some of the shortfalls of PnP, although some problems are tied to
the platform (BIOS, BIOS/card pnp revision, etc.)

Correct. RH 7.0 should have it; RH 6.2 does as I'm running it and I have
a AcceleRAID 250. Note that the driver is a 'block' driver, not a SCSI
driver. The normal install should find it if the hardware setup is correct.
Note that if you're using it for a RAID level, then you need to set up the
raid configuration BEFORE you try to install your OS. I used the onboard
configuration to set up my RAID 5 and then installed Linux on it.

Get a better Telnet client. Seriously, TELNET.EXE is the worst Telnet
client in existence. PuTTY is a pretty nice one, and it's free.
TeraTerm is another reasonable choice.
If for some hideous reason you're stuck with TELNET.EXE, then make the
first thing you do when you connect to the Linux box "export
TERM=vt100". TELNET.EXE is *almost* capable of handling vt100
emulation. PuTTY and TeraTerm can do that perfectly, or they can do
vt220 (colors!) or xterm or linux-console emulation.

Only if you are using HTTP 1.1 *Virtual Hosting*. And the directory in
question is configured inside of a <VirtualHost ...> ... </VirtualHost>
section. If your DNS was not setup properly, the HTTP daemon (Apache)
would not know the Virtual Host mapping and thus not apply the
proper <VirtualHost ...> ... </VirtualHost> section to your HTTP request.

How can I log what's happening in rc.local when it runs? I put a script into
it but the script doesn't seem to run. I want to see if there are any error
messages or see how far the script is getting. "cat ./var/log/messages"
doesn't show much - it just shows ppp trying to connect, ie: the end result
of the commands. What I want is like a DOS "echo" to display things as they
are happening. Also, does rc.local run as user "root" when you are booting?

It is highly likely it will, and since it is SCSI, it will be easy to
work under RH7.0
(RH7.1 isn't out yet, unless you know something I don't know :) )

Now I want to run it via a bash script with the sleep command so that it

it exit.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance,

So either, leave it up 24/7, or diddle /etc/crontab to run
/etc/cron.daily at sometime when the machine is likely to be up.

The default ulimit for maximum file size may be too small for your
file. On my machine, it is unlimited (except for the space actually
available), but YMMV. See man bash and look for ulimit. Do a ulimit -f
and see what the maximum file size you can create is. You can change
it with the ulimit command. You can also do it in a program. See man 3
ulimit.

Did you forget to tell the install program to put LILO into the MBR?
The install program asked where you wanted to put it, you remember. If
so, boot it from your emergency disk (you did make one, right? It
asked you if you wanted to make one and you said YES, right?), and run
/sbin/lilo (after making sure that /etc/lilo.conf is correct.

On Intel systems with ext2fs, the maximum file size is 2 Gb.

I am trying to use Linux as my internet gateway for a home network. When I
bring the computer up, everthing looks good thru ifconfig:
lo - good.
eth0 - good (with internet address)
eth1 - good (with intranet address [192.x.x.x])
The problem is, when I try to PING anything, I get no response and time out.
I have kind of fixed this problem, but would like it to work correctly.
What I've gotten so far is:
1. disable eth1(intranet) at boot.
2. After boot, lo and eth0(internet) come up good and I can PING the
outside world.
3. I then have to do the following command [ ifconfig eth1 192.x.x.x ]
4. I then take care of my IPCHAINS and can get to the outside from behind
the linux machine.
My problem is that when I try a NETWORK RELOAD, it doesn't work (I know,
because the statements are in RC.LOCAL). I'd really like it to work, and
hope someone knows what's wrong. Below is some info that may help...

Ok, I've got these files that I encrypted eight years ago with the unix crypt(1)
command.
Problems:
1. can't find crypt(1) here on Mandrake 7.2. Is that the export regulation rule
thingy at play?
2. I forgot the password anyway.
Now I've heard there's some software kit that can help me crack back open into
clear text
these, oh, 5 KB files. Where do I ftp the rpm or .tar from? And when I crack
back open one file,
will it give me some key to use on the rest of the files as I remember the
passwd is the same for them all.
Mandrake has a decryptdir command but it fails as it depends on a non present
crypt.
I did do the obligatory FAQ and Google searches. Must be in a FAQ not currently
in my news.answers spool.
Moochoes grassyass for any tips.

Nope. On an Intel system running Linux with an *unpatched kernel* and
an *unpatched libc*, the max file size is 2G. IIRC, RedHat 6.2 and a
few other newer distros shipped with a patched libc and a patched kernel
that could handle larger files. The real problem lies in the Intel
CPU's 32-bit architecture, since ext2 is 64-bit by design and can handle
files up to 2T in size on 64-bit processors without any fiddling.

A couple points of which you should be aware of...
The version of sndconfig that comes with mandrake7.2 seems to be able
to detect pnp cards on its own. If you have one, you probably won't
have to mess around with irqs etc. If your card is really old and
isn't plug-and-play, it's a good idea to figure these things out before
hand. If you're running windows, you can do this through the System
section in the control panel. Just browse through the devices until you
find your sound card.
Generally, setting up sound in Linux isn't nearly the headache it was
a few years ago.
Also,
Ctrl-alt-f3 doesn't switch you to runlevel 3; it just gets you to the
third text console. To get back to X from there, just hit alt-f7.
I'm sure there's a howto explaining this in great detail somewhere...
You also shouldn't need to reboot (by typing 'shoutdown -r now') after
setting up sound. That's one of the great things about Linux-- no
reboots required unless you make some *major* changes to the system,
unlike that other operating system...
cheers,
Carl

I know of two such programs:
- Explore2fs (http://uranus.it.swin.edu.au/~jn/linux/Explore2fs.htm) is
a read/write ext2fs access utility. It's not a filesystem driver per
se -- that is, you can't assign a Linux partition a DOS/Windows drive
letter. You can use it to transfer files back and forth, though.
- fsdext2 (http://www.yipton.demon.co.uk) is a read-only ext2fs
filesystem driver, so you can assign an ext2fs partition a drive
letter (D:, E:, etc.) and access files directly from Windows programs.
You can't write to ext2fs partitions with it, though
There are also one or two Windows NT ext2fs drivers. The fsdext2 author
is reportedly working on one, and another is available from
http://www.chat.ru/~ashedel/.

Subject: Please Help

Please email any help you can to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Please email me (it's hard to check these newsgroups) if you can help
