Actually there is a point. For one, I have an HP 100LX palmtop on which
I would very much like to run *nux. It's an 8086.

you lost your windows manager settings. try to re-install what ever windows
manager you where using (After-Step ? FVWM95 ? ) or edit the
/etc/X11/xinit/Xclients or the /etc/X11/xinitrc/.xinitrc to run your window
manager. you might wanna try doing both.

try some man pages first.

Hewlett-Packard used to have a DOS menu that had bright little blkocks of
function commands across the bottom of the screen. They burned themselves
into the monitor in about a week flat, and into the user's forehead in maybe
a month.

Thanks for the ideas. I have discovered a nice program wmppp, made for Window
Maker, though it works nicely anywhere. Displays lights, history bar graph
and transfer rate all in a neat little 64x64 window, as well as two buttons to
start or stop ppp!

You need to take a look at the Ultra DMA Mini HowTo. There is a patch that
you
can get that will fix Lilo for support of the Promise Rose controller. BTW
I have an
SIIG Ultra DMA controller and have exactly the same problem you have. Since
I can
boot from Floppy OK I'm set until I upgrade to the newer Kernel (i'm still
running
2.0.36-3) and it works just great.

The reason that his disks are at hde, hdf is because he probably has an
onboard IDE
controller that is not being used, just like I have. The Onboard IDE
controller will take
up hda to hdd which means that his Ultra DMA Controller will start with hde
and go to
hdh. My Linux boot disk is on hdg and it works just fine except that I
don't have Lilo
installed on it. However, I boot from floppy just fine and thats good
enough for me at
the moment.

Hope this helps,

You may have noticed that the LILO mini-HOWTO is out of date.
Alessandro no longer has time to work on it, and I told him I would
do the next rev. I planned to work on it last month when I was on
vacation.

But when it came time to do the work I could not find anything
written down *anywhere* about *how to use* SGML-tools, and that is the
format that even the mini-HOWTOs are in now.

There is a system of mirror sites which distribute SGML-tools, but
their documentation directory is, essentially, empty.
There is some stuff about the directory hierarchy in which it installs,
but as far as I can tell there is no list of tags, no introduction
for the technical writer who does not know where to start.

There is some reference stuff, details for people who already know the
architecture, but if there is an overview someplace, I missed it.
SGML-tools is a programming language, and there seems to be no
"printf hello world" for it.

"This directory contains (should contain) documentation.
At the moment it is a bit too empty,
so any tech writers with spare time: drop a mail!"

I wrote Cees de Groot, and he said yes, it's a real shame that this
is an undocumented package, how about that. Why don't you install
it and figure it out from the source code. Uh huh.

I'm willing to reverse engineer LILO again to catch up with the
changes. It's a great little product, and it's got a good reference
manual, quite adequate for writing a tutorial. And it's still one of
the hottest topics in the installation forums. But I do not have
time to *also* reverse engineer the preferred documentation tool
for Linux HOWTOs. Maybe I'll do it in HTML (which is well documented)
and publish it outside the Linux Documentation Project entirely.

When someone writes the HOWTO-HOWTO, please let me know and I'll
use it to update the old LILO file. Meanwhile, my apologies for
the obsolete condition of the LILO mini-HOWTO.

I have had rendering problems with WP8 reading MS-Word files.
WP8 would show black text on a black background, etc.
Try running the document through Web Publisher and back.
It worked for me.

When I use Star Office it explodes into five 150 MB processes
and the machine becomes unusable. (Is 2.2.x's scheduler any
smarter than 2.0's was? If ever a unix needed Hog Factor to work,
Star Office is the test case.) I eventually removed that
piece of crap from the system and replaced it with Applix.

When I get the answer to this question, AND a new users' introduction
to SGML-tools, I'll revise LILO mini-HOWTO.
If another few months go by and SGML-tools remains undocumented,
I'll bag it and just do a LILO Web page. LILO is too good to
go undocumented for new installations, when its User Guide is
unavailable.

Hi,
I installed glib 1.2.0 successfully, but now gtk+ won't install. When I run

IE 5.0 for Unix is a stripped down version of the browser without all the
other connectivity; its essentially another much lesser product. To really
port IE to Linux (or any unix) would require rebuilding the windows API on
the UNIX (a massive task). If there were customer demand for IE 5 for Linux
Microsoft would probably release it, there isn't and so...

I had the same problem. Star Office's user interface makes no sense at
all. I tried the Help and it exploded into five 150 MB processes
that took two hours to kill. It's obvious that no usability testing
has ever been performed on this product, and I doubt anyone uses the
gratis version. Perhaps the expensive commercial version has a different
user interface or something.

I made the mistake of letting it try to be my email program.
This prevented any other email program from working. How the hell did
they manage that?

Remove Star Office from your computer and get Applix or Word Perfect.
Both of them work.

This is because Netscape (for some odd reason) decided that the sender:
header would trump the From: header. You can fix it by adding the line:

user_pref("mail.suppress_sender_header", true);

to ~/.netscape/preferences.js - Make sure that Netscape is not running

It sounds like you are running a buggy X program that assumes the X Server
it is talking to will operate using the MIT Shared memory extensions with
it and it dies when this doesn't work. Note that even if the X Server
implements MIT shared memory extensions, they can't be used (for obvious
reasons) if the client and the display are on two different machines.
A well written program will normally check whether the extension is there
and the X Server is on the same machine, and will use a different
display strategy where one of these conditions fails.
