Subject: Mandrake 6.0 kernel
Date: Fri, 27 Aug 1999 10:23:25 +0100
How do I upgrade the kernel in Mandrake 6.0? I've just moved from RH5.2,
and upgrading was trivial - download patch-2.2.xx (where xx is, of
course, one greater than the current kernel) and then do something like
gunzip -cd patch-2.2.xx.gz | patch -p0 (from memory, so I've probably
got the syntax wrong. It's in the README file, anyway). After that it's
just make xconfig. Simple. However, with Mdk6.0 this doesn't work.
Patching the source comes up with lots of errors, and I didn't dare to
try to rebuild the kernel afterwards because something was bound to go
horribly wrong.
I guess my questions are....
(a) Do I just download the full source for the new kernel I want, and
patch that in future, or is there another way?
(b) What's in the Mandrake 2.2.9 kernel source that stops patch from
working? Do I need it in future?
Many thanks - feel free to flame away if this is all written down
somewhere obvious. A URL with the flame would be nice, though :-)
Ben.

Subject: editing /etc/fstab
Date: Fri, 27 Aug 1999 09:29:34 GMT
I am just getting started with Linux. I am more
of a programmer than an administrator. So I hope
my problem is not too difficult for most here;
this is a relative term since I don't know what
to do :-(
I have a Dell with a dual boot capability of NT 4.0
or SuSE 6.1 Linux. I have been editing /etc/fstab.
But my latest addition hangs my machine. I was trying
to mount my CD player at start-up time.
When I boot into Linux, I get the usual
LILO boot:
Loading Linux
.
.
.
bad format on line 22 of /etc/fstab
and then it hangs.
All I want to do is delete this entry so that I can resume
programming. Please advise me on how to edit fstab before
it gets to the point of hanging. There must be a way of
editing this table before Linux uses it.
Thank you.

Yes you can. You can boot a Virtual Machine using a real existing drive.
This is called, in VM terms, a raw disk, as opposed to a virtual disk (a
virtual disk is just a file on your host operating system, and that file
can be on an ext2 partition or in a FAT partition accessed by Linux).
However, there are two things to consider when using raw partitions.
First: their performance is inferior to that of a virtual disk. Second:
before booting a Windows raw partition, create a second hardware profile
in Windows (by making a copy of the original hardware profile) and use
that profile when booting from a virtual machine.
Finally, if you have no experience with VMware, I suggest you start by
playing with virtual drives, not with raw drives, until you get familiar
with things. I suggest you go to the vmware site and read their
documentation. I also suggest you visit their newsserver
(news.vmware.com) where all kinds of topics are discussed and where you
can get a lot of help (including from vmware people, they often answer
questions themselves).
I have been playing with VMware for a few months. I have installed
virtual machines with W95, W98, Linux RH ans SUSE, and DOS6/W311. In my
opinion, this product is wonderful, and is getting better and
faster with every new release.

Boot into your rescue system, then mount your root partition somewhere
(NOT /!). Then you can edit /etc/fstab (or any other file on /) to your
heart's content. Then reboot normally.
It is normally good practice that when you edit a configuration file you
back it up first -- :)
There is a good rescue system available on the first SuSE CD if you boot
it directly. Just go to "Start Rescue System" in YAST.

The problem exists in RedHat as well. As long as LANG is unset , all is
well. However, that defeats the purpose of LANG.
I will now move this to the Mutt list.

About once a week or so.
I'm convinced there must be one underlying problem, cos Navigator keeps dying
for no apparent reason, even though I turned Java off - my NN dies if it gets
near any Java. I have posted many questions about this, received many replies
and tried every fix under the sun, but I still can't get it to like Java.

That's true unless the very slowness _is_ the breakage.
Also with more multimedia stuff fast but not completely accurate can be
preferable to slow but complete (i.e would you prefer speech recognition
which ran in real time but which occasionally got it wrong to speech
recognition which took 5 minutes to recognise 10 seconds speech but always
got it right).

Could someone explain why this modem refuses to install on COM 2, IRQ 3 like
it's supposed to?????
This is a PNP modem, but unless I disable COM 2 on Win95, and manually set
the IRQ and port address, the modem installs at COM 5 at the COM 2 address.
It does the same thing in Linux. It will not install on COM 2. Nothing
else is on COM 2 or IRQ 3 except COM2, which seems to confuse this modem in
Windows and Linux.
It is a model 178500 Voice Fax Modem and is NOT a winmodem.
Thanks for any help

No, because you didn't express your opinion wrt the subject of the
question. You suggested that I form my own opinion about the magazines,
which is exactly why I asked the question and I have gotten helpful
responses from others.....
If you don't have anthing constructive to add the just shut up. I don't
understand why it is some people feel they need to abuse others. I guess
it builds up their small egos or something....

Subject: Can/should a firewall be used as DHCP server
Date: Fri, 27 Aug 1999 13:31:35 GMT
Hi there Linuxeros!
I have a project (network) that I must finish within the next few days, and
one of this network's vital components will be a firewall between my
private network, and an ADSL connection to the web. I got 5 static IP
addresses from my provider, so I am going to set up 5 different firewalls
for different 'depts.' so they are invisible to each other. Of course, the
firewalls will be Linux based.
I would like to use DHCP for the private network side, and I am wondering
if I can/should use the same box that I will use for the firewall as a DHCP
server...From what I have read, as many services as possible should be
disabled for the firewall, but I am wondering if the DHCP server would also
be a potential security hole...I wonder if I it can even be done as this is
my first firewalling project!
I'll be using Suse or Mandrake for the firewall...Or any other distro that
can get the job done! Suggestions are welcome on this issue too!
Thanks in advance for any suggestions,
Regards,
Jorge M.

Just do a query on it without downloading it
For example
rpm -qiRp
ftp://unix.hensa.ac.uk/mirrors/contrib.redhat.com/libc6/i386/bash-2.03-7.i386.rpm

At a guess, you need to tell your sendmail configuration to allow it to
be a relay. You may need to experiment a bit to make sure you are as
secure as you want to be in terms of which hosts can route through you -
although you could just go for being an open relay, and hope the spammers
don't find your box to route through...
