More appropriate might be fcntl(2) or flock(2), since those are the
system calls that implement file locking. Linux supports both advisory
locks and mandatory locks.

First you can make a "make bzImage" instead of "make zImage", but I think a
Kernel with 1 MB is really to large! You should compile most "features"
like sound, printer, vfat ... as modules. That makes the Kernel much
smaller, but do not effect functionallity.

Yes. It tars first and then gzips the tar file. That's one reason why
it gets better compression than zip. Perhaps you could use zip if you
want each file compressed separately.

Well, Ian, your response is something I would expect out of Microsoft
support. You tell the truth, but convey no information.

Felix,

You need the latest Linux kernel to get FAT32 support. It works in 2.0.35
and later. It is also in the 2.2.0.??? version that should be readily
available soon. I am using 2.0.35 and have been using FAT32 support for
several months now. You may have to config and recompile the kernel but
it really isn't hard.

Unless you are truly adventurous, stick with 2.0.35 until 2.2.0 is
available through a standard distribution.

Subject: Removing a block device (KDE Uninstall)
Date: Tue, 26 Jan 1999 09:04:04 -0600

Hello,

I am having a hell of a time trying to fix a hard drive problem. My
drive burped and caused some corruption of files, mostly my KDE files.
I ran fsck multiple times until it didn't report any more errors. I
then tried running KDE again but nothing showed up, so I tried
uninstalling the KDE by removing the rpm's. Everything was going fine
until it tried to remove kdebase and died when trying to delete the
konsole file. So, I went out and tried to rm it myself, but rm
reports:

rm: konsole: Operation not permitted

When I did an ls -l on konsole, here is what it reported:

b--sr-s--t 1 26228 20297 116, 112 Jun 7 2032 konsole

I've tried running chown and chmod on konsole, but it keeps giving me
Operation not permitted.

How can I remove this file? As far as I know, it is the only file
keeping me from completing the reinstall of the KDE.

Thanks for your help!

Curt

Folks,

ppp keeps disconnecting on me while I'm doing ftp. I can do a telnet

disconnect within a minute or so, and /var/messages says that pppd
received SIGHUP.

Any idea what can be done about this?

Supposedly. They took over as head of X development when The X
Consortium dissolved. They basically have the same role as a mediator
between Sun/HP/IBM and other Open Group members and work to push the
'state of the art' forward.

Hi,

I very recently installed very succesfully a very real SB16.
The type of card you mention also doesn't reside in my gray memory-cells
from reading the DOCs, so I think it's bad chance for you...

I don't think it is an issue of pro or anti-MS, but of common sense.
Anyone who's bother to do any trivial amount of reading would know that
mainframes command the lion's share of Y2K. Some people are so into being
anti-MS, that it blinds them in rather interesting ways. Every company
IBM, Sun, Oracle everyone is at the mercy of MS.
Hell, if MS is so powerful, why fight? The are clearly about the take
command of the Earth.

I have never used Mathematica. What is it?

Oh, a have noticed linux's stability can vary from computer to
computer. It never crashes on me, but for other people it can be as bad
as microsoft. I hear the old Adaptec drivers are buggy enough to bring
the system down from time to time.

Hi

I have alinux box running, and is used as a webserver. I can run CGI (in
perl) from the command line okay BUT, when I run it from a web form, it
gets upset.

The cgi simply takes in form variables, place into a file , pgp sign the
file, and thats it, but it doesn't want to.

The error I get is

Cannot open tty, using stdin
Unable to get terminal chracteristics: ioctl: invalid argument

Can anyone point me in the correct direction...

Thanks
