Subject: SMP-machine freezes with high load
Date: 27 Jan 1999 02:31:57 GMT
Hello,
I'm running a slightly changed SuSE 5.3 distribution (kernel 2.0.35) on
a Dual-PII machine on the Internet. It runs a few virtual web servers
(apache) with moderate load. At times I use it to distribute a rather huge
newsletter (SmartList). After being up for almost 2 month the machine froze
when I tried to send out my newsletter. The weird thing is that it handled
an average load of 1.5 quite well (peaks up to 4.0) for three hours and then
crashed. The same thing happened, when I temporarily ran a webserver with
quite some traffic (approx. 200.000 Hits a day, lots of perl-processing and
mysqld-queries) - it worked fine for one day and then crashed.
I tried to find something unusual in the logs, but everything looked just
normal. I have no clue where to look now. Am i facing hardware problems or is
it a problem w/ the stability of SMP?
Ciao
Thilo

Nope. Semi-decent passwords don't fly these days. You
might want to check parc.power.net/morgan/Linux-PAM if
you're intent on bypassing password pickiness (or set
passwords as root)

Depends what applications you're talking about, I suppose.
If you can get an x86 linux version of the program on
the HP-UX box then no problem.

I can feel it just fine the next time I boot my machine. The boot is much faster
and smoother. As I said, ext2 is less prone to fragmentation than FAT, but
it still benefits from being defragged.

The pre9 does work. I don't understand why it was released with the broken

I have a response for those who care, and more problems: Known bug in
Applixware. The bug is:
You need to replace the SS_START_INSET@ with GR_EXPORT_GIF89@.
Now, my problem is that no matter what I do, I cannot get the whole legend to
fit in the resulting image. No matter what dimensions I make the image in the
spreadsheet, the exported image comes out chopped. If I could just solve this,
Applixware would solve all of my problems (well, except for the fact that I
drool on my pillow...)

I suspect you did not install the C and C++ development components when you initially

You need all these to compile programs from source code.

I don't think it's your hardware. I had the same problem
with RealAudio on my K6-233 and on some Dell's at school.
When the machines are running Windows everything is fine,
but when you play the same .rm file in Linux the machine just
about crashes. I think the Linux version of RealAudio is
just not up to speed with the other (Mac & Windows) versions.
Of course, if anyone knows how to fix this problem then

I have the exact same experience. I use NT for my desktop and I *try*
to leave it up 24/7 (the idea of constant rebooting is nauseating). But NT's
memory leaks cause it to ramp up quickly in memory usage and eventually (about
once every week, I *must* reboot it to get back an acceptable
response/performance).
