Hardly surprising if it's not being started. But why is swat listed in
services? Are you connecting to a secure port? I seem to remember that
the swat README instructions were detailed as to what one shoudl do ..
but I must say I have never found swat in the least bit useful! Far
easier to edit smb.conf yourself.

Front ends (like kppp) cause more trouble than they are worth. Can it is
myu first suggestion.
Then if you want to ignore that advice,
route -n
to see what the routes are set up. Is there a default route?
cat /etc/resolv.conf
to tell you what the dns resolver setup is. Do both of these while ppp
is running.

I have had somethins similar hapen to me, only difference was blackbox
vs gnome, but the problem might be the same. Some rogue application
filled up my /home partition (by dumping lots of crap to
.xsession-errors). Since /home and /root were on different partitions,
I was able to log in as root, but not as any user. All I needed to do
was delete the offending file, and all was well.

Subject: bind control left
Date: Fri, 04 May 2001 17:59:12 +0100
Hi,
Does any one know how to bind <CTRL>-<LEFT> in bash. I'm using RedHat
7.0 with bash 2.04.11(1).
After reading the bash man I tried the obvious:
>bind -q backward-word
backward-word can be invoked via "\eOd", "\eb".
>bind '"\C-\e[D": backward-word'
backward-word can be invoked via "\eOd", "\eb", "\C-\e[D".
This doesn't work. I'd guess that what this really means is
<CTRL>-<ESC> followed by "[" followed by "D" (which doesn't work).
It has occurred to me that the problem may be due to the fact that bash
is just receiving ASCII characters and doesn't know anything about the
state of the control key itself. As <CTRL>-<ESC> doesn't have an ASCII
code "\C-\e..." is meaningless to bind. As bash receives <ESC>[D from
the left arrow with or without <CTRL> I guess there's no way to bind
<CTRL>-<LEFT>.
I guess I need to go below bash and somehow make the system send
something else for <CTRL>-<LEFT> to the console. Given the output of
"bind -q backward-word" I wouldn't be too surprised if the console
should be receiving "\eOd" for <CTRL>-<LEFT>.
Am I right so far and if so how do I go about altering what the console
receives?
or:
Am I talking complete bollocks and if so, how do I bind <CTRL>-<LEFT> in
bash?
Thanks,
Mike Boyd

The release notes for RH 7.1 indicate that the 2.4 kernel loves
lots of swap space. They recommend 2x Real Memory up to 256MB!
(They caution that installer will not create more than 2GB of swap
space, you'll have to do that on your own.)
This sounds crazy for a workstation! What is going on in swap space?

I'm such an idiot ;)
its so easy: you can deactivate a partition by activating another
partition using activate. This seems to be a tool for dos-targets, where
you can only have one active partition at a time.
so 'my' created deavtivate will delete the bootflag on every partition.
But this would be easy to remove in the source (its a for-construction
that is even readable for non-C-people ;)

An advantage to "tarring" vs cp-ing: create the archive file, compressing
as needed. Keep at least one additional backup. If you go the cp route,
you overwrite the previous backup, potentially with a corrupted file that
you don't know about. When you discover the corruption, it's too late
to retrieve from a good backup...

If you are looking for a web based email client (so you can check your

You can try gnuplot. It can output to postscript (for feeding to lpr, etc) or
ASCII (for emails and suchlike). Use the terminal type of "dumb" for ascii
graphs. You can also specify the graph legends, axes, etc.. It's the most
versatile graphing program there is.

OK this is strange and got me confused.
Downloaded REDHAT 7.1 ISOS.
Burnt both CDs.. and now.. I have 48speed CD x 16 DVD
Toshiba SD1502 DVD ROM.
Anyway the installation refuses to boot if my CDWriter is
enabled via the BIOS... once disabled.... it boots fine.
But when it comes to the installation of the packages..
it looks at the CDwriter, which it didn't boot from and
has NO CD in .. wtf going on here?
Anyway so I thought Id try it the otherway round..boot from
CDWriter and disabled DVDROM... it does the same thing..
boots ok.. but when it comes to installing.. it looks at the DVD
ROM which is disabled via BIOS and has no CD in. Cant
eject as it locks the drive.
cheers.

I agree. They seem to be talking out of both sides of their mouths on this
one. Releasing the appropriate info to the commnity would take minutes.
They obviously really aren't interested in doing that. But they want to be
able to jump on the Linux bandwagon, or at least not be seen as lagging in
the Linux area.
I have a feeling they want to help Linux as little as possible. Why?
Because it's a potential competitor to their own commercial Unix. It's only
a matter of time before enterprise commercial Unix is replaced by open
source, and the longer HP can keep its finger in the dike, the better. Even
print drivers for desktop machines help Linux gain momentum. I doubt HP
will come around until they see themselves losing more by not being able to
sell printers to Linux users, and that may still take awhile.

Keep in mind that the printing and server business units at HP are
_quite_ independent.
It is entirely likely that the printers in question are no more usable
with HP/UX than they are with Linux, and that the respective business
units are _fine_ with that. There just can't be many people that want
to hook up a $175 colour printer to a $275K PA-RISC system with 8
CPUs.
They're not so worried about lack of Linux printer sales as they are
about the potential for competitors like Lexmark, Canon, Epson, and
such to "steal" their intellectual property if they reveal actual
specs for the low end printers.
If the support for HP colour printers is crummy, then by all MEANS,
feel FREE to:
a) Buy some other vendor's printer, and
b) Tell HP that they lost that sale because of lack of support.
If they get 5,000 letters indicating that they lost sales, they're
going to extrapolate that as indicating that they lost a whopping lot
more than that, because not everyone writes a letter.
One letter is NOT going to make the difference; the one letter will be
neglected and not noticed. But if there are hundreds or thousands of
complaints, eventually a VP will hear a rumour...
