Usually Windows reinstallation will either not affect the mbr at all or
will corrupt it. Better to use fdisk /mbr FIRST.

Date: Sat, 16 Sep 2000 15:25:46 +0100

Hi all!
I'm having trouble installing Caldera eDesktop 2.4 version of Linux.
Everything is fine until I get to the xserver configuration screen.

I have an Asus GeForce2 7700 delux graphics card which is unrecognised by
the installation program, as such I am unable to continue with installation
as these details are required.

I have a mitsubishi 900u monitor connected to the card.

Please could someone tell me what settings I can use to install linux
successfully, I'm not too bothered about 3D stuff, I just want to install
and use linux for web development testing.

So, I would be grateful if you could tell me what settings I can chose that
will be compatible with my card.

Settings that I have tried so far result in a corrupted screen, with white
and black corrupt bands.

Thanking you in hope of any help you can provide.
Ste!

Being terribly lazy, I just used rpm --nodeps, and it worked.

I strongly recommend that you follow the advice given to you by
Robert Heller. Don't put the lilo boot loader in the master
boot record of the first disk. It is very likely to mess up
NT. There is a (mini) HOWTO on the Linux installation CD called
Linux+NT-loader which also explains the method he describe.

There is a second method, but it depends on having a spare
Linux partition on the first drive, which you won't have.

Would that be the same as or compatible with the NVIDIA GeForce?

If not, you could try installing as a generic VGA, and then perhaps
upgrading to XFree 4. But that isn't for Linux newbies. Or you could
do a LISA install and run in text mode.

If you purchased eDesktop, you get installation support. Email Caldera

An easy way to use the NT Boot Loader is to get a copy of Bootpart 2.2 (free)
and use that to setup the nt boot loader for the os selection; place lilo
in the "boot partition" of linux. I have nt on 1st drive and suse on the
2nd drive; also have used the nt system selection to show linux on the 2nd
drive as the 1st selection (default selection).

Subject: Kernel 2.2.17 ( problem to get vfat support)
From: Josef Oswald <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Date: Sat, 16 Sep 2000 16:23:14 GMT

Hi:-)

In my desperation I am asking this question here.

Since 2 days I am trying to compile a new kernel ( several versions
like 2.2.17 which should be a stable version and 2.4.0-test8)

The problem is that even though I do select MS-DOS and vfat support
during the configuration, at start up I read the message:

vfat not supported by kernel, also that no modules cant be found.
yet if I cd into /lib/modules/2.2.17/fs those models are being listed
there.

So what is the problem here?

I need access to my winXX partition form Linux because I moved a lot of
files there ( as a sort of back-up, now they are save even from me
:-))

Hi,

> know how to port forward one webserver

This is something I stopped trying after losing every packet on the firewall
;)
So I set up apache on the firewall and used the proxy and reverse proxy
options
to redirect traffic to my webserver.

# httpd.conf
# << snippet >>
<VirtualHost _default_:80>
    ProxyRequests On
    ProxyPass / http://192.168.0.5/
# ProxyPassReverse / http://192.168.0.5/
</VirtualHost>

This routes everything comming in on port 80 to my internal server.
Using:
ProxyPass /other/ http://192.168.0.6/

would route to the seconds machine that now is reachable through
http://yourmachine/other/ ???

> if there is a request to my external PC's IP address at port 80. But I
want
> to set up another one....running NT (for
> my room mate who wants to run IIS) how can I set this up????

The only thing I can think of is to do the same thing you did on a different
port. Problem is that you
need to specify the port when you connect from the outside.

Hope this helps a bit.

Pim

2 Gig - lucky you, you found it! I tried to tar off a backup of more
than that amount and ran into it also. Best bet - break the
problem space up into digestable chunks. I just descended one level
via a forloop and did several tar files vice one.

I think I read somewhere that there are plans afoot to increase the
file size limit, but can't remember where I saw it.

I don't know what a loopback device is, but maybe you can break up the
problem space into smaller chunks...

You could use ipchains with port forwarding, so any http requests coming
into (say) port 8000 get forwarded to port 80 on your roomie's IIS box.

My /etc/conf.modules has the following in it:

If anyone could help I would be very grateful.

Sounds like you fried your display--though that seems a rather extreme
result given the point at which it occurred during the installation
process. Your BIOS and HDD should be OK, but that's little consolation
if your display is fried. Given the cost of screen replacement, you may
be in the market for a new laptop. Given my own experience with
(several) COMPAQ laptops, I'd look for another brand.

As Doug already pointed out, there is a bash shell for DOS/Win from the
GNU folks. Also, if you want to spend a little money for a very good
product, there is MKS Toolkit - a korn shell for the MS environment.

Subject: ftp files on the command line?
Date: Sat, 16 Sep 2000 17:54:04 GMT

 Hi, there,

I just got a problem with the ftp and the ncftp. Say, usually when we
use ftp or ncftp, we are not sure where the target file is. So, we use
the interactive mode. But Other times, I know exactly where the file is.
So, I want to just type a command to ftp the file. From the man pages of
both ftp and ncftp, I can type the name of the ftp server on the command
line together with ftp or ncftp. But how about a file, say, in
/pub/file? I don't think we can try "ftp ftp.server.domain/pub/file". It
did not work.

There are many benefits for this. Say, one is simplicity. The other is
if we want to ftp a large file, we can combine the "nohup" with ftp or
ncftp.

Any hints?

Thanks,

Davis

lame....no it's not a lame question, that's the best program. :) You might also
look at grip, which is an X frontend.

Works just fine, but you might also consider Mozilla or Galeon instead.
