Subject: LINUX PPP on a SPARC10
Date: Wed, 27 Jan 1999 12:01:20 -0500

Hi,

Though I'm using a Sparc10 with RH 5.1, the ppp setup should be trivial
under linux. I getting a "LCP: timeout sending" problem.
 =

I've tried 2 modems (microcom 28.8p, microcom 56k), changed serial
cable, disabled the eth0 interface while connecting PPP and I'm still
 getting the same problem. =

I suspecting a netmask problem or interrupts problem but I need help
to validate (or invalidate) these hypothesises.
 =

BTW: To connect to my ISP, I'm using a DIP script. When ppp is started
on my SPARC I can see the modem SD led glowing (sending a lot of
stuff to the ISP port) and small burst FROM the ISP port.
 =

The following is a sample of my configuration and my logs
(/var/log/messages).
 =

-> Here's the log:

The Sparc uses both different UART and irq than PC. The following shows
you what I got:

I'm using my HP425 with a SLIP connection (using ppl) for many years
now and I never had problems.

Is there any way to use manual SLIP connection within LINUX (no =

 automatic script)

 Any suggestion are welcomes

 Thanks in advance

You should readup on the pppd (for the dialup part) and on IP Masquerading
(for dialup and to connect the hub).

Hi.

I am trying to install Linux on my computer (486DX4, 24Mb RAM, HD 813Mb -
600Mb for Linux, Creative Labs Multimedia Kit).

Well, the thing is that when the linux install program asks me what kind of
CD-ROM I have it gives me two options: SCSI or OTHER.

I have one ide harddisk connect to ide0 (I don't have secondary ide port),
and Sony CD
connected to sound card. The CD-ROM is a Sony 33A. In OTHERS Ive tryed
the options "SONY CDU-31A" and "Sound Blaster PRO Interface".

I tryed the following:

sbpcd=230,SoundBlaster

and cdu31a=230,5

The SoundBlater address is 220H. The CD-ROM is at 230H.

If somebody had a problem like mine or knows the solution to it, please help
me.

Thanks in advance,
  Carlos Felipe Zirbes

KDE 1.1 has a new feature, in the KDE Control Center, under Fonts etc.
called Apply style to non-KDE apps. Through X resource wizardry, it
changes the colors & fonts of all X11 apps, including Netscape to match
the fonts used in KDE apps. It does it's job alright - Netscape now has
the same style fonts & colors as the rest of KDE, but this feature goes
a little too far & smashes some font settings in Netscape that make
readability easier. Turn this off & Netscape goes back to normal.

My BIOS (Asus motherboard) allows you to disable the halt on errors. So
if there is no keyboard it will keep booting.

The kernel version is not the problem. The RH 5.1 kernel (I forget the
version #)
is compatible with FAT 32 - I used it until I upgraded to RH 5.2.

fdisk is flaky when running on a HD with more than 16 heads _and_ more than
1024
sectors (what you would probably have with LBA and a HD >8.4 Gb). It
reports
problems that aren't there.

Can you mount the Win 98 partition and read it from within Linux?

When running fdisk, did you mark hda5 as 'bootable'?

OK, this boring stuff is my ppp. As u can guess it uses chap. How can i use
this to connect to the internet with my slackware 3.6?

I've read the how-to and tried for 2 months, but....
Now I have created chap-secrets with my

loginname isp password

My provider uses my entire email address as the login name, BUT in
my chap file I use only my name without the @whatever.com

I enabled
+chap

username myname

an option to append my provider name with my address.

Any suggestions? Please please don't tell me to read the how-to again. I've
done that already 4 times and didn't find anything that helps.
I tried to use ezppp, but apparently i have 2 be able to logon manually
first and this is just to make things easier.

Your suggestions are greatly appreciated.

my windows 95 ppp script starts here

This (most of the time) works for me. This is in the
