I am having trouble with my Canon BJC-4200 in Linux. This never used to happen
back when I used RedHat 4.2, but now with 5.2 and kernel 2.2.2, lp just does
not work. I put a job in the queue, and when I use lpq or lpc>status while
scrathcing my head because nothing is printing, it says, "Waiting for lp to
become ready(offline?)" even though the printer is online. Any clues as to why
this happens would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. Ghostscript also does not seem to work with my printer, if I do get it to
print anything, I just get errors and a bunch of numbers on the page. What is
the right gs driver for the BJC-4200?

I know I can tell rpm to ignore the check.
That's not my goal. I want to set rpm straight,
so I don't need to circumvent it.
Anyone know if there's a way to update the rpm
database with the libraries that actually exist on disk?

You are probably using FAT16 in your windows 95 B
If you aren't, try formating your partition through windows as FAT32,
I am sure you will see it then

xosview doesn't refresh the picture nearly 100 times a second so it
should look like it's always active. (timer is 100 times per second)

Recommend you try any of the ATI Mach64 drivers in xf86config. I have
an ATI 3DXpression+ PC2TV, and it works. (I used choice 13, simply
becase my card matches that choice exactly.)
As far as the kernel is concerned, there's an awful lot of things that
may affect the compiling of the kernel. I've only had one problem with
compiling a kernel, and that's when I made a kernel that was too big, so
I converted a few items into modules. Things run smoothly.
I don't know about Redhat enough to say anything about compiling a
kernel, but what I've done is after downloading the kernel, I made a new
directory in the /usr/src directory corresponding to the new version,
moved the symlink linux to the new directory, untar'd the kernel, and
made the kernel.
I'll give a step by step: (Make sure you're root before you do
anything!)
cd /usr/src
mkdir linux-2.2.2 #Or whatever version of the kernel you're
installing
rm linux
ln -s linux-2.2.2 linux
cd linux
make mrproper
make menuconfig #I find this to be the best thing in the world!
make dep ; make clean
make zImage # Or bzImage or vmlinuz, depending
make modules # If you made any parts of your kernel as modules
make modules_install # VERY important!
After this, you'll have a new kernel in
/usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/zImage (or bzImage or vmlinuz,
depending). Where you place it depends on whether you use LILO or
Loadlin. (I use loadlin, so I just copy the kernel into /win98c/linux,
win98c being my first Win98 partition)
I'm sure I'll probably get flamed for one reason or another about
one tidbit or another (ie Win98, loadlin, etc.) To those: To each his
own, I have my reasons.
I hope I've helped out a little.

Check out the Samba package. Visit www.linux.org and do some

Hello
I am relatively new to Linux, although I have been a UNIX user for many
years. From speaking with some more experienced Linux users, I
understand there is a way to use the dos command to run a DOS program in
Linux.
Here is the goal - As my Linux box serves as a network router, I want to
have Linux booted as my primary OS, yet allow my son to run Windows 95
in the DOS window to play games. Is this possible?
I'm running Redhat 5.1, BTW.

Hmmmnnn well yeah that checks out... As it turns out I do have metamail
installed. AND the file /usr/bin/shownonascii is there... BUT it apearantly
insists on using X11 stuff... I'm not good enough to rewrite it so as to
work on my box (on which there will never be a gui, untill gui's can be
run in TEXT MODE on a console) so I had to learn what the mailcap file was
for... in that I commented out any lines that I determined lead to commands
that required X be installed etc...
Trouble is I have no idea what lines to add to get the raw text of any
text type not recognized simply routed to the screen in raw form via a
pager... That is, I DO want any mime encodeing decoded, and the resulting
non-ascii text be simply fed to a pager...
Well if'n anybody wants to explain it to me I'd appreciate it...

Hello:
I've got RedHat 5.0 ,I've used minicom through X and the ext modem
dialed
and did its thing, and I'm told by minicom that I've connected
successfully(It plays this little tune).
But when I try to browse or ftp or ping any address(except 127.0.0.1,of
course),it tells me host unreachable(after freezing up for a while,I
notice that the ext modem lights flashs when dialing and connecting, but
didn't flash the read or send lights when I used any of the about
commands,so I persume that the linux is
either not seeing the modem(which I find unlikely, since minicom uses it
fine),or linux doesn't know that it has to use the modem to
communicate(I'm just guessing on this one),maybe its "trying" to find a
network card(which doesn't exist) instead of using the modem.
When I use Lynx to go to a link it tells me "searching for
www.redhat.com" and just freezes there.
Can anyone please help me out and tell me how I can make my ftp and
browser use the modem to transfer?
Thanks!
