Hello,
I am running Red Hat 5.2 and I am trying to compile a kernel with ppa
(zip drive) and lp drivers as modules. In following the Module-HOWTO
the first step is to <cd> to </usr/src/linux> and issue the command
<make config> (i am aware that i could also use make xconfig{buggy} or
make menuconfig) all give the error:

make: *** no rule to make target 'config'. Stop.

any ideas on what is going wrong?
Thank you for your help in advance,

Try running

/sbin/depmod -a

That should make an index which modprobe uses to determine which
modules are available.

AFAIK, it should be in one of your startup scripts.

Hi Hans,

In what file(s) is the path statement set? The reason I ask is that
I installed jdk117 and want to use it instead of kaffe. And what's the
best way of de-installing kaffe?

I'm using kde as a desktop and tried to put the jdk117 in the
/etc/profile and bashrc files, but the jdk117 comes up after the
path to kaffe.

I'd like to de-install kaffe if I could, but would settle for
putting jdk117 before kaffe in the path. Then it would be found first
and kaffe would never be called.

And is there a java-linux how-to? I've looked but haven't found one.

TIA for your help.

It sounds like you might not have the kernel source rpm installed. This is
fairly easy to remedy. Simply download kernel-source????.rpm and then install:

rpm -i kernel-source???.rpm

You probably also need to install the kernel headers. Since you are in FFX, VA,
use ftp.tux.org as your ftp site. Hope this helps.

Let me add my $0.02 of opinion here,

        On Fri, 25 Dec 1998 10:07:03 -0800, [EMAIL PROTECTED] ()
wrote these thought provoking words :

: It's just a nice counter to all the assinine WinVocates
: that like to claim all of the registry's problems are
    : strictly in our heads.

Well, it's rather unwise that all configuration should be kept in one
area (the registry) so that all configuration changes in the wps and
applications lead to it's editing, making it prone to be corrupted.
Fine.....it's true.

That spontaneous registry deletion, was an unfortunate and rare
incident.

I had an OS/2 lockup once while working, hit the reset button and it
would not reboot after that. A chkdsk run did not work at all.

I did a WPS restore from a backup that I had.....this backup was made
with third party software by the way....and I was fine. The ini files
got corrupted somehow. I guess the OS/2 ini file concept and structure
should be ditched as well eh?

As I said..it was a very unfortunate incident. Never heard of or seen
it happen before. That does not say that it cannot happen, grant you,
but it must be very infrequent. Corruptions should be a lot more
common.

I have had to restore my OS/2 WPS from a backup on a number of
occasions because of the problems which I knew was directly related to
something that I did or totally mystifying. Interestingly I have never
had a windows registry problem that has prevented me from rebooting or
generated crytic messages about the registry being corrupted.

It's really interesting how experiences differ. I still think that
OS/2 is by far the better OS and most of all that no OS is perfect.
It's nice not having to be loyal to any of them and just merely going
with the flow, making objective assessments and using the most
suitable OS for my needs in a given time period..

I guess strange things like that do not occur on the great Linux now
does it?

I am confused!
I installed samba on my RH5.1 machine at work with no problem.
I set up my smb.conf with my workgroup and information.
Off my Windows 95 laptop in network neighborhood, I can see, reddog my LINUX
hostname, then double click, enter my password, and I have my working
directory on my LINUX box. I can even map my working directory to a drive.
This works great.

        However,
At home on my home network, I have RH 5.2. I load samba, and configured the
same was as above.
I can see my LINUX hostname in network neighborhood, but I can not see past
the hostname.
I double click on the hostname in network neighborhood. I get prompted for a
password.
The dialog box reads:
              \\BUSH\IPC$
I enter my password, and I get a dialog box "Password is incorrect. Try
Again.
I do not understand why this works great on 5.1 and not on 5.2.
What do I have configured wrong on my 5.2 machine.

You are right. I am not really interested in how my car works.
However, when it does not work (which seems to be still the norm in
the computer world), it would help that the thing is not sealed in the
black box. Lots of logs and messages from the system helps the user
fix some problems himself.

Why bother? Unless 'course you're talkin' 'bout FreeBSD. W/ Redhat,
all I do is do 2 partitions swap and root. Yes, there's a free program
called fips on RH CD. But do it at your own risks. No guarantee. Plz

I think this line is your problem here!
I tried the same (starting out from the sample file), and nothing
worked. Then I got rid of this ftp mount point, that I do not realy need,

Another warning: I had my ZIP drive mounted previously (before starting
the auto-mounter) and that confused it not-so-surprisingly! So make sure
that none of those devices are mounted by normal fstab or manual command
before starting the auto mount daemon!

Hope this helps...

I'm not going to give you another lecture, rather, I'm gonna tell you
my story and let you decide.

The day I got RedHat 5.0, I got it up and running that evening. It
takes me 7 seconds to load install on CD in dos box. install is
menu-driven. It's a matter of yes/no/what questions. Menus are
minimal. I can't pretend that there's no problem w/ RH5. Like it'll
auto-install X when you want xv w/o your knowledge.

Not until recently I got my hands on SuSE. Gosh! A ton of menus. It
takes me more time on menus than on actual install. Upside is very
detailed. But too much for me. I gave up at last.

Subject: Problems compiling things with AutoMake+AutoConf
Date: 26 Dec 1998 04:36:03 GMT

There have been numerous times I have wanted to build a program and/or
library from the CVS sources, and as such the makefiles are generated
using some combination of automake, autoconf, and libtool.

However, I frequently run into problems trying to get these makefiles
generated. Most of the programs I try to compile (and have problems with)
are the gimp (development version), gtk+, and gtk-engine. However, I will
frequently get error messages running along the lines of... (taken from
the last attempt at GTK+-CVS (Dec 25.)

[davidl@triforce gtk+]$ ./autogen.sh
I am going to run ./configure with no arguments - if you wish
to pass any to it, please specify them on the ./autogen.sh command line.
Running gettextize... Ignore non-fatal messages.
./autogen.sh: gettextize: command not found

./configure: syntax error near unexpected token
`AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE($PACKAGE,'
./configure: ./configure: line 579: `AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE($PACKAGE, $VERSION,

The primary two lines are the last two, ie. the ones referring to AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE.
This is the same error message
I get when trying to compile each program and/or library.

I have already installed the latest versions of libtool, autoconf, and automake using
the .rpms (I tried the
.tar.gz files with the same success.) I am also able to use the pre-generated
configure scripts for most other
programs without any problem.

Any ideas on what is causing this?

BTW, I am running off a system based off of RedHat 5.2, however the only major system
updates I have made are to
the kernel (2.1.132), gcc (I now use pgcc), and several libraries (gtk-1.1, glib, etc.)
