But plugins use advertised interfaces, too. They just happen to be in the
same address space as the thing on the other side of the interface. The
problem here is that GPL was written back in the days when the software
ecology was simpler: there were operating systems and there were programs.
The only strange beast was the library, but that wasn't too strange.

Now we've got both static and dynamic libraries. We've got OLE and CORBA.
We've got plugins. Let's consider OLE. What are the GPL implications when
one OLE component uses another via its published interface? Depending on
how things are set up, the two components might be statically linked into the
same program, or one or both might reside in dynamic libraries mapped into
the same process, or they might be in different processes, or they might
be on different machines transparently hooked together via RPC.

I don't think there is any doubt at all the GPL is enforceable. It is not
at all comparable to shrinkwrap licenses.

Yes, see smbclient and smbmount.

I am not sure about printing to a printer on another machine though.

I don't see how. You would still nee to associate "foobar" with an IP
address, and that would change everytime you dial up.

Jean-Reginald,
Not sure exactly what you want. If you want a second console session
Alt F2 and return with Alt F7. If you want windowning run X. Or this
may be missing the point. Do you want a second monitor with remote
login?

Hi,

Yes I got this about a week or so ago with 2.2.2- very frustrating. I have
RedHat 5.2 and although I had all of the correct updates according to the
kernel documentation, I had bad rpm builds of iniscripts and modutilites. I
would either rebuild them, after verifying the required versions via the
kernel docs, or if you have RedHat use the sources referenced here:

 http://www.redhat.com/support/docs/rhl/kernel-2.2/kernel2.2-upgrade.html

Good Luck,

You probably hosed that session. Are you at the console without X or in
an xterm? Cat is less robust when diskplaying binary files. Less is
more able to handle displaying a mistake an living through it. It also
is more flexable in general. Cat usually gets hosted but even when the
cursor goes you can type into the blank line you can't see and exit to
kill that xterm and continue - at least if your in X. Or bring up
another xterm and kill that guy thats hosed. Worse case in x you can
ctl alt backspace to get out and restart x.
If your at the console you may try another virtual console with I
think alt F2, login and kill the hosed guy and return with alt F7.

Well, in one of my previous post I stated that I am pretty certain
that if a set of actions _obviously and intentionally_ leads to the
same result as another set of actions, it will very likely be viewed
as equivalent before the law.

>Example:
>
>It's legal for me to sell you a widget overpriced by $100, but

But the two situations are not the same. You only project some
variables, and ignore others. In particular, in the first case there
exists a (possibly implicit) valid contract for the exchange of the
money between us, in the second situation it does not.

>The process does matter!!

No doubt about it. However, see my argument above.

Hi all,
I would like to learn more about the services in /etc/services, to figure
out which ones I actually need. Some of the entries have no man page,
though. For example I have:

efs 520/tcp # for LucasFilm

and similar other line mysterious to me. Any pointer will be appreciated.
thanks,
