Welcome to Linux-land!
Your "English" is much better than that of natives where I live.
For first time adventurer I would strongly recommend getting distro on
CD/CD's.
Downloading whole distribution is for someone who can recognise a
mistake if the download misses. This comes with time.
Have fun...

Peter... I don't think every piece of hardware is supported as I've got an
IBM 300GL with an onboard S3Trio3D as have a lot of people and we cannot
find a Gfx Driver for the 86c366 chipset !!!

I don't know if this works, but give it a try.

$ cd ~
$ cp .bash_profile .bash_profile.bak
$ # use an editor to modify your .bash_profile and put the imwheel at
the end of the line.
$ vi .bash_profile

In windows my HD LED behaves normally. However in Linux (SuSE 6.4) it
now remains permanently on. The only time that it does behave "normally"
is if I cause the CDROM to fail. Previous advice (thanks Hal) suggested
that there may be CD applets running, but I see no evidence of this.

(Trivial, but important, as it was the first thing a mate commented on
when showing him Linux. If I can get this sorted, I may be able to
convince him to load Linux himself).

Any answers?

Thanks

Jo

I am paying dial up charges to pick up your core file. Where should I
send the invoice ??

Surely the S3 Trio 3D is supported? It been out for years now (I seem to
recall it's the 375 chip, but I'm not going to look it up ...). If ibm
have put out another chip without putting out a linux driver for it at
the same time, I would also be surprised ... write to them and remind
them of their game plan.

This is extremely misleading, to say the very least.

Some PCI modems are real serial modems on the PCI bus, and Linux
will happily use them, once you have run "setserial" with the
appropriate arguments (see "cat /proc/pci" for the I/O range and IRQ).
Many/most PCI modems, however, are cut-down software modems that
mostly will _not_ run on Linux, as the needed drivers are only
available for Win9* . Some of these can be made to work using the
Linux driver for PCTel chipset modems, available from www.linmodems.org .
Just give it a try.
In general, though, external modems are much preferred. They simply
get plugged into a serial port and work - and you can reset them
by switching them off and on again; something which might require
a reset of the system if the modem was an internal one (or even
opening up the case and unplugging the whole modem card, in case
you entered invalid settings in the modem's NVRAM).
