Joe,

Have you tried to change the permissions on the log files in question?

1.) Plug the computer into a UPS and hook up the software to do a safe
shutdown when the power to the UPS fails.
2.) Disable the power switch on the computer. Sometimes you can do
this with the BIOS, but otherwise, some plastic or metal hiding the
power switch held on by duct tape may be required.
3.) Disable the power switch on the UPS. (see 2, above)
4.) Plug the UPS into an easily accessable power strip in plain site.

Now, when they turn off the power strip, the UPS will detect the power
failure and after a while, it will power down the machine.

Whose computer is it? If it is yours, lock the door so they cannot get
at it. If it is theirs, do not worry about it. Let it corrupt their
file system.

See the solution I proposed above.

It may be possible to have sync do the sync command more frequently,
lowering the amount of stuff that will be messed up. I have not looked
into this, but it may be possible.

The worst way would be to set up a daemon program that does a sync
once a second. That does not appeal to me, but it would work (and
raise your overhead perceptably).

You might wish to look at the source of flushd (in the kernel) which I
assume is concerned with this. I am not sure how to find it, but
someone else might be able to tell how to do this.

Sure. Some of these shutdowns may damage the file system beyond the
ability of the fsck to recover.

Perhaps it is beyond your control, but perhaps it is not beyond the
control of the management. Try discussing this problem with the
management. If you are lucky, management must use this machine also,
and they will not appreciate having the machine suddenly shut down and
having to wait for the fsck to fix up as much as it can and for the
sysadmin (you, I assume) restore any lost files from backups. Also the
restored files may be obsolete, depending on your backup policy.

The best way to get around the upgrade to SE is boot down into DOS and make
a backup on to floppy of the win.com file in the windows folder. Then
delete the win.com file (this hold the licensing info for Windows) then try
the over-install by booting from the SE CD and running set-up from there.
It will then upgrade your current installation.

You should then be able to install and configure a standard install of your
chosen distro.

Good Luck

RedHat and another distro included alogin or autologin, and IIRC enable an
app to run at startup. A scan on freshmeat.net for login should give you
some hits. RH required xdm/GUI login, so I didn't go any further (maybe
later). The other required getty with -l or something to disable the
prompt, but with the new .conf(at least I think it was the new getty) I
couldn't disable the login prompt.

This depends on what you want, I am fearly happy with it but I could
have lived without it.

Read the changes file and upgrade. I am running RH7.0 and used rpms
from wolverinne for this, possibly those will not work on 5.2. Take a
look at http://www.rpmfind.net/ and the "links" in the changes file.

No, except upgrade the other packages. For a IMHO good guide to kernel
compilling look at http://www.linuxlookup.com/html/guides/kernel.html.

You are exceptional. I would estimate that 90% of the word

Thanks for the help, All. It is a "large file" issue. The value below is
2^31 - 1, rollover point for a 32 bit signed integer. Doesn't have
anything
to do with "uncompress" or "gunzip".

So I guess I can custom brew a 2.4 kernel from sources. Not a big deal,
but I'm wondering if there's any clean way to patch the 2.2.16 kernel
in the 7.0 distribition of RH? Or would I have to rebuild that kernel
anyway, too?

In any case, I now know what the issue is, so thanks again.

Hm, I've never seen this or any entry in roots crontab before,
that comes with SuSE per default, your settings are pretty much standart in
/etc/crontab.

Check

ls -al /usr/lib/cron/

total 24
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Mar 16 01:37 .
drwxr-xr-x 92 root root 16384 Mar 19 10:04 ..
-rwxr--r-- 1 root root 1700 Jul 29 2000 run-crons

Perhaps your permissions are not sufficient?

permissions and ownership, of course
for the file and the directory if you're trying to create.
Then there's the question of space:
is the filesystem where you're writing full? (df).
