I run SuSE 5.3. libdl.so.2 isn't on my distro, either. Did you
recomple your kernel to reset all the system variables to their new
parameters?

I doubt it, since the next release will be called SuSE 6.0 ;^)

Biff? Well, I never used it, but doesn't it require the user to be logged
on?

This wouldn'd fit what I need. Imagine a little box without monitor standing
in a corner of my room and running 24h. What I want is that it beeps, when
new mail came in. Just like the ringing of a telephone. So, if it "rings" I
will start Outlook (or whatever) on my Windows-machine and look who dared to
write a letter to me. Or can that be done with biff?

Lilo will boot other operating systems. I have Win95/linux. Lilo is
set to default to whatever you choose. You can have it boot normally
to linux, you can set the amount of time to wait before booting the
default setup.

To avoid the problem of Windows overwriting the mbr, you can install
Windows first and then linux. Once they're installed, if you do have
to reinstall Windows for some reason, you just have to boot your linux
boot disk and rerun lilo.

I never hand-hacked so many Makefiles, but finally, I got Mozilla (I think
it's the tarball from December 11 or so) to build.

I even got the executable to run (of course I had to set an
LD_LIBRARY_PATH). But it terminates immediately with this error:

Gdk-ERROR **: an x io error occurred
aborting...
IOT trap/Abort

I am using SuSE Linux 5.3, kernel 2.0.36, with XFree86;
gtk-config returns that my GTK version is 1.1.10;
my GDK is libgdk-1.1.so.10.0.0 (got it from Gnome CVS).

Can you help me?

I'm really sorry you feel that way ... how do you deal with SPAM?

{Besides the later report that your FROM line doesn't work!  :-)  }

>From a personal experience the spam became very over-powering. When I
first got on the net (first ISP) I didn't take any precautions and I
rapidly became swamped by spam, 8+ pieces per day, some very large and
if I wasn't on each day to keep them cleaned up they were a pain.
Even after I started the NOSPAM thing it was too late, I was already
on mailing lists.

{Swamped is relative, but I regularly access my account via slow(er)
dialup connections and the SPAM is a real pain!}

A year ago my ISP went out of business and I was forced to change. I
maintained my NOSPAM policy and now I DO NOT GET SPAM! It does work.

I am still paying for my folly at work ... I post a little from there
and it hasn't changed in many years ... I get 10+ pieces per day ...
more on the weekends. It will be scary when I get back from a couple
weeks of vacation. I'll probably get some nasty notes from the
administrator about too many messages stored in my inbox.

Just one other point ... isn't it considered "anti-usenet" to reply by
email instead of posting to the group ... to assist others following
the thread?

I'm having trouble with Netscape communicator 4.5 occasionally hanging
when
reading pages from the web. Certain files (e.g. Barnes and Noble's
magazine
list) will hang it every time. It is not a random event. Communicator
is then
crashed. I had similar trouble with an earlier version (maybe 4.08),
but in
that case the problem could always be fixed by turning off the Java
Script
capability. Now if have it (Java) off and still have trouble.

I'm using Slakware 3.4 with the 2.0.30 kernel and the libc5 library.

Has anyone see behavior like this? Any ideas?

You may be referring to $HOME/.terminfo (a private copy of the terminfo
database - imho a misfeature, at best). In my faq (this is the most faq):

The current version of ncurses is 4.2
There's an faq at
        http://www.clark.net/pub/dickey/ncurses/ncurses.faq.html

> I was wondering if that was a bug, or a feature? :^)

I voted against it (but it got released with that "feature", and the
best I could do after that was to deprecate it by making it not the
default mode of the configure script). I can't simply remove it since
there are enough people out there who think it's a Good Thing that
they would stick with that version (and continue to file bug reports)
than upgrade.
