Subject: error compiling kernel using make xconfig
Date: Tue, 23 Mar 1999 03:07:03 GMT
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

On a freshly installed redhat 5.2 system, and with all the errata
updates and pre-2.2.x updates, I get the following message when
running xconfig. I did run make mrproper first.

gcc -Wall -Wstrict-prototypes -02 -fomit-frame-pointer -c -o tkparse.o
tkparse.c:37: stdio.h: No such file or directory
tkparse.c:38: stdlib.h: No such file or directory
tkparse.c:39: string.h: No such file or directory
make[1]: *** [tkparse.o] error1
make[1]: leaving directory '/usr/src/linux-2.2.2/scripts'
make: ***[xconfig] Error2

xconfig quits at this point.
I do have tk installed.

Don't know if this makes a difference, but I did not install any of
the original 2.0.36 base files, like the headers, ibcs, or source,
that comes on the 5.2 CD. I used the linux-2.2.3.tar.gz file for the
source.
Did I miss something on the install of 5.2?

Try who, this should give you the ttys where a user is logged in.

This would be perfectly normal if you had an xterm running, maybe
to start Netscape from? Look here, this is me, having logged on
as user zlatko on tty1 (VT1), as root on tty2 (VT2), and 2 xterms
running on ttyp2 and ttyp3 (tty is a console login, ttyp is a VT100;
have a look at /etc/ttys and/or /etc/ttytype):

TK212017089010:~$ users
root zlatko zlatko zlatko
TK212017089010:~$ who
zlatko tty1 Mar 22 04:33
root tty2 Mar 22 09:47
zlatko ttyp3 Mar 22 07:24 (:0.0)
zlatko ttyp2 Mar 22 18:49 (:0.0)

I also have 4 Netscape windows running, but that doesnt count as a
login. Remember that X uses TCP/IP for its connection, so if you
open a shell on this connection it counts as a login.

Note that this explanation might not be entirely correct and
accurate, but I think you get the point ... ;-)

There is a file, but thats for runtime only - /etc/ld.so.conf, and/or
the LD_LIBRARY_PATH environment variable. For compile-time, use the
-L/path/to/your/libraries option (add it to the Makefile, the variable
is usually called LFLAGS, LDFLAGS, LDOPTS or something like that).

It basically works like this: the -l tells gcc the specific library
to link against, and the -L tells gcc where to find that library.
The name of the library, eg. -l<name> is expanded using a standard
pattern, namely lib<name>.so - for example, passing the options
-L/I/Am/Here -lPleaseLinkMe to gcc would result in gcc linking
against /I/Am/Here/libPleaseLinkMe.so. ;-)

This ones solved by adding the -I/path/to/your/include/files option.
Thats a capital "i", not to be mixed up with the -l, lowercase "L".

Dear friends:

Very sorry that I forgot to include the actual address for Netshow for
Linux in Taiwan.
Here it is:

http://ftp.vit.edu.tw/msdownload/taiwan/netshow/Linux/

The files is 753kb compressed (ns173_linux.gz). Please remember to read
Microsoft's instructions on installation, if you are a layman like me and
need it at:

Please let us know if it worked for you.

Glint is a piece of garbage. I have no idea why Red Hat continues to make
their standard rpm manager despite the fact that it's ridden with bugs.
Use xrpm instead. It will save you more than a few headaches.

My nickels worth. I have also noticed that Linux is slow. I have a 'unique'
method of measuring the idle time of my system. I have custom heat sensors
(very sensitive) that tell me when things are getting busy. Linux runs cool.
To cool. Even in KDE the system is barely working, yet performance is below
that of WIN95. I know however that my drives are only being accessed at
16bit (You have to run hdparm to get 32bit access for now. New kernal will
detect and tune this parameter for you). But I have also monitored memory
access times (I have 128MB) and what should be a blink is more like a yawn!
I will say it 'almost' looks like it thinks my processor is a 486 (But
kernal was compiled as a Pentium). Conclusion. Get the new kernal (2.2.x)
soon.

As long as they aren't wincdrom we should have to worry about this.
I guess it's like those make for windows 95 printer cables. Don't laugh, I've
seen printer cables in a store that were labelled that way among other things.

Unfortunately, this might not be realistic... the "PPA
problem" is that HP won't release the PPA specs so that a good
driver could be written. The person working on the driver is
trying to reverse engineer the protocol. Until the protocol is
opened (if ever), the support for the 712/722 and others which
use PPA will never be as good as it would be for something like
a PCL printer. On Tim Norman's page, he even recommends that
people who are considering getting a printer should not consider
the 712/722/etc...

So I'll echo Grant's tip: take it back, if you can.

They probably prefer to keep selling their own OS... But, it looks
like the new toy from www.vmware.com will let you run any flavor of
MS windows (including NT) as a guest under Linux. I'm impressed
with the beta after one day of playing... Too bad it's not free, but
it beats having several PCs on your desk or losing access to Linux

M$IE5???? WHY???? Lynx is so much faster, and if you want graphical,
Opera just got ported to linux, and it's what I use on my Win machine as
well, it's faster, and sooooo much smaller than IE or netscape.

Bernd
