I am looking for a more detailed explanation of how to setup ssh2 to
communicate between my servers. I would liek all data encrypted, but am
having a bit of trouble assigning keys and configuring their use. I
have read all the man pages and READMEs associated with ssh2 as well as
the tutorials on their page, but they are rather sparse in their
explanation of setting up keys or they assume you have already gotten a
degree in encryption.
Any easy to configure example pages or instructions would be
appreciated. I am using ssh-2.1.0 compiled from source.

I need help finding the appropriate command to change the case of the
initial letter of multiple filenames...
e.g. from sample.txt to Sample.txt
In DOS I would have done something like...
copy a* A*
Linux commands cp mv ln don't work on multiple files unless the
destination is a directory. I need the files to be in the same
directory. Links are preferable.
Help point me in the right direction.

In the Tips-HOWTO there's a script fro converting all filenames to
lowwercase, you could alter that script to do what you want I'm sure.
On my distro the HOWTOs are in usr/doc/HOWTO/ and if you havn't got
them you can find them at:

I just want to say that I agree. More and more projects get bugtracking
systems, Debian is a very good example and I think it would benefit Linux
to also have one. Since the Linux project is the most important of all
(there wouldn't be much without the kernel, would it?), I think it's
just good old common sense. That way more people can work on more bugs
(or maybe "issues"? :-)) instead of many people on the same one.

Subject: passwd Auth tokens problem -- please help
Date: 23 May 2000 21:42:34 GMT
Greetings!
I am getting a problem running passwd to change my (and others') password.
This is under RH5.1/PAM. A shadow password file wasn't installed during the
initial installation.
[root@lavender /etc]# passwd
passwd: Authentication token manipulation error
Two things happened lately that *may* have affected this:
1. We're building a bood disk using Yard 1.18 and one of us may have mucked up
the PAM configuration (it doesn't look like it, though)
2. We had a power outtage on Sunday night and this particular machine died.
fsck recovered the partitions and reported no damages, but you never know.
Help, please?
Thanks!

You can't - elm is not a transport agent or a pop client. Bring
the mail over with fetchmail, popclient or netscape and you can
read it locally at your leisure with elm.
Or use an integrated transport and user interface. Netscape or pine?

How are you trying to delete the lock file?? Are you checking afterwards
to make sure it is deleted? From a console window try
rm -f ~/.netscape/lock
and see if that works.

As this was prompted by a reply by me, I'll say that your sentiments,
although not uncommon, are far from universal. Overall, I've had as many
people thank me for both e-mailing and replying to groups as have
complained. My news reader inserts "[Posted and mailed]" when I do this,

Those two files contain all the information you need, AFAIK. You should be
sure you set the new installation to use the same password encoding,
though, else the passwords in shadow will be useless.

There have been NFS bugs in all of the 2.2.x versions - ufs bugs
from somewhere around 2.2.6 to 2.2.10. Things like that are
almost certain to cause data loss to people that don't know
about them, so it would be extremely nice to have a central
repository for bug tracking, Even if it has nothing to do with
actually getting them fixed, the rest of us could use it for
the workarounds and to know which versions to avoid.

Has anyone succeeded in getting the StarOffice 5.1 or 5.1a suite to work
with Red Hat 6.2?
Or am I the only one having difficulty?
In my case, I get an "unrecoverable error" message and then the program
shuts down. After that, it aborts midway through the startup process.
This is with the Gnome Desktop on a Pentium 133, 32 meg Ram, lots of
disk space and lots of swap space.
A friend runs 5.1 on Red Hat 6.1 and has no problems. I can run the
Windows version with no problems.
After I had tried the 5.1 version and encountered these difficulties, I
sent a message to Sun's support folks and they said 5.1a would cure the
problem. I downloaded. It didn't make any difference.
Suggestions?

Date: Tue, 23 May 2000 22:06:29 GMT
THE SOLUTION to the problem "Netscape crashes in Linux when I use the
Address Book" is posted at:
http://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=10433
The SOLUTION offered by notting.AT.redhat.com is simple:
1.- exit Netscape and make sure that no Netscape process is running.
2.- remove the lines containing the word "locale" from your
.netscape/liprefs.js and .netscape/preferences.js files!
These lines should look almost like this:
user_pref("ldap_2.servers.pab.locale","en_US")
3.- restart Netscape.
Many thanks to notting.AT.redhat.com!!!

so, please say what were you thinking about.
also, what standars in programming are you talking about that VB does

your hate for microsoft makes you blind to the truth. windows api is
very stable since win95, not to mention that even going from win16 to win32
was not that bad as you probably think it was.
compare this to KDE or Gnome development, which is very unstable at this
point.

No, I could not tell.
I also don't see how support by free ISPs is any kind of indicator of
the quality of technology. I wouldn't touch those free ISPs with a 20
meter, high voltage catle prod.
As for what are you going to use if for, you are clearly limited by
your imagination. What is it you are doing on Windows? Why can't you
do it with Linux or *BSD?
I spend a fair amount of my leasure time on usenet and mail. Linux
seems to do those functions pretty well. I also develop software.
Linux seems to have some pretty good tools for that too. Linux also
seems to have more text processing tools than non-unix type systems.
Also, there is at least one good image processing tool for Linux.
There are also tools for digital signal processing, content
distribution, type setting, data storage and retrieval, network
management, network services, security, data encryption, numerical
analysis, etc, etc, etc.
It seems to me that anything you could possibly want to do on a
computer can be done on Linux. If some feature is missing, the tools
are provided to implement it. Saying that you can't do anything on
Linux is utterly absurd.

It should be possible to automate some dependency and file use
information with a script, ldd, and possibly some other utilities that
can figure out what names are passed to a dlopen() call. Basicly,
take a census of all the file information based on the files
themselves rather than relying on some spec file to be set up
correctly.
When you find some random file, you should be able to find out what,
if anything, references it. If nothing references it, then you should
be able to garbage collect it.

Hi,
on my Debian2.1 the whole network-stuff is located in /etc/init.d/network.
Add something like
route add -host 10.0.0.3 eth0
(or whatever IP your second machine has) to this file.
Hope this helps,
Marcus

Common communications standards should be free to propagate
on their own onto any and every platform that has users that
care to communicate.
Also, a 'compatibility standard' becomes more valuable the more
people that use it. I've always thought that Troll would be
better served with a lib that was given away to all but devtools
that EVERYONE would be willing to pay for.
