If most people can't even set up win98 at home, what hope have they with NT?
If you want to see how easy it is to set up a home network, with IP
masquerading, firewalls etc. I would reccommend John Sery's book 'Linux
Network Toolkit' (IDG) which comes with all the software you need to get it
going. Starts off with simple networks and works up to workgroup size complex
ones.

Actually, I believe I wrote back too soon... Everything looks nice as I
check the printers using `lpc status` and `lpq -a` and the like. But, when
I attempt to print, it just sits pretty in the queue without error
messages.
An `lpq -a` results in:
Printer: lp@stm0150 (dest [EMAIL PROTECTED]) 'Stylus ColorIIs'
Queue: 1 printable job
Server: pid 20400 active
Unspooler: pid 20402 active
Status: sending job 'synic@stm0149+718' to [EMAIL PROTECTED] at 15:21:50
Filter_status: c2s is ready and printing
Rank Owner/ID Class Job Files Size Time
active synic@stm0149+718 A 718 (stdin) 152229 15:21:50
`lpc status all` gives the following:
Printer Printing Spooling Jobs Server Slave Redirect Status/Debug
lp@stm0150 enabled enabled 1 32344 none
The only thing I can see going wrong is that the lp-errs and lp-acct
directories (?) get complained about by `checkpc -f`
lp: ** cannot create '/var/log/lp-errs/'
lp: ** cannot open '/var/log/lp-errs/'
lp: checking file '/var/log/lp-acct/'
lp: ** cannot create '/var/log/lp-acct/'
lp: ** cannot open '/var/log/lp-acct/'
The directories should be writable:
drwxrwxrwx 2 root adm 1024 Mar 29 14:56 lp-acct
drwxrwxrwx 2 root adm 1024 Mar 29 14:56 lp-errs
I've even gone to the point of removing them entirely and seeing if it
will create the files/directory itself. No go. Nothing I do seems to
remove this error message.
Here are my printcap files (I don't *think* they're a part of the
problem):
#/etc/printcap
lp|c2s|Stylus ColorIIs:\
# :lp=/dev/lp1:sd=/var/spool/lpd/c2s:\ # Used by BSD LPR
:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:\ # Used by LPRng

:af=/var/log/lp-acct:lf=/var/log/lp-errs:
#/var/spool/lpd/printcap
lp|c2s|Epson Stylus Color IIs:\
:lp=/dev/lp1:
When I cat a file directly to /dev/lp1, I get output.
I'm running Kernel 2.2.4 on Debian Linux 2.0. LPRng-3.4.2. If anyone can
help, I'd be very appreciative. At the moment, it's a case of being "so
close but so far.."

Here in comp.os.linux.misc, Harry <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
spake unto us, saying:
PMFJI: I'm not the original person you responded to, but some comments
are in order, methinks...
>Making software unintuitive doesn't make it better and doesn't endow
>the user with additional skills. It's just poorly designed from the
>user's point of view.
Don't forget that something which seems unintuitive or "poor design" to
one person might be quite intuitive and useful to another.
Several years ago I collected DOS file managers, and I wrote informal
reviews about them on a local BBS. I had something like 45-50 of them
for comparison at one point (and my collection included various retail
utilities like XTree Gold and Norton Commander, as well as some of the
more well-known shareware utilities of the time like Stereo Shell, dCOM,
ElfTree, Treeview, etc.).
The one thing that struck me while I was looking at these utilities and
using them was how radically DIFFERENT some of the approaches were from
each other.
Almost all of these file managers were intended to give the user a way
to display and manipulate files in a full-screen manner, usually using
the keyboard to move around the filesystem and tag files so one could
perform operations on groups of files. But sometimes the approaches
were so different that it was very hard to move from one to the other.
I usually found, however, that almost all of them had some fairly good
qualities once I got used to the author's assumptions. Sometimes the
ones that seemed the worst at first ended up being one of my favorites.
I ended up registering Stereo Shell after hating in initially.
As Unix users know, the same differences can apply to editors. :-)
>Why do Unix people get so needlessly defensive all the time?
Why do people familiar with the Windows desktop paradigm assume that
Unix users want to use the same type of environment that they do?
Why do they get so defensive when Unix users tell them that their ideas
about "the way user interfaces should be" might not be what WE want?
>Much Unix software suffers from poor usability - not all of it, just
>a lot of it. Now you're telling me that's a good thing?
I'm not him, but it really depends.
One of the cool things about a GUI is that it can be easier to learn if
its well-designed. But the same thing that makes it so much easier to
learn can end up seriously limiting its usability in other ways.
One of the cool thing about a CLI is that it's more easily automated
and more easily used via a network connection (e.g., a telnet client).
But the same thing that makes it easier to automate and use remotely
can make it more cryptic to some not used to the CLI paradigm.
Which interface is "more usable"...?
The answer: each one can be, at least when one is given a certain set
of priorities. There is no "correct" or "better" interface.
>You don't hear me say how stable Win 95 or Win 98 is compared with
>Linux? What's the point in denying the truth?
Because in this case I think that "the truth" is actually a fairly
subjective judgement call.

Subject: Maestro-1
Hi there,
I guess you can say that I am another unfortunate owner of a soundcard
based on Maestro-1 chipset. As far as I can tell, support for it has
been available since one of the patches to 2.2.2. At least i've seen
people refer to ess_pci modules and steps to get it working. Hoping to
solve this problem once and for all, i've downloaded the 2.2.4 kernel,
and I don't see anything about the Maestro-1 anywhere. The only
reference that i've found is a few comments inside sb.h. Something like
"Maestro-1 support", which leads me to believe that it is supported as a
SB compatible, yet when I compile it into the kernel, the card doesn't
get recognized. For example, the audio section under /proc/sound is
empty, etc...
What gives?
Any help?

It isn't just bash, tcsh gave me the same. The only line that is mattered
for was the first (#!/bin/sh). If you pop that up in emacs, you would see
#!/bin/sh^M
...
with every line having a ^M (cr or \r) before the linefeed. However, you
only have to remove the first for the c-shell to understand that it shouldn't
be looking for an executable that ends with a \r (dumb system). Normally it
is just important that you transfer tkcon.tcl in ASCII, so that the CRLF<>LF
conversion occurs as needed betweens system types (goes for any Tcl file).
The problem really lies in the c-shell interpretation (or lack thereof) of
the CRLF/LF/CR line terminators, and would go for any script file. A shame,
but I don't know any way around it but to watch how files are transferred.

modify some existing C code. The program is a desktop manager for
character terminals, and the area needing change relates to mail and
uses a curses library. I don't believe this is a very involved project.
I have a fairly limited budget, but can pay a few hundred dollars for

No, you can't. The SB16 and other emulation on the SBLive is done in the
Windows driver, not in hardware, so it's totally silent under Linux.

This is true. For example the HP 720 and 710 both work under NT and DOS
but support under Linux is extremely limited. What makes the 895
different is that the printer can be controlled with HP's PCL 3, a
published command language.
However, if the box says that the Mac is supported, then Linux is

I jsut got a copy of RH 5.2 w/ KDE, upgraded to the 2.2.3 kernel, and
everything seems fine. I have a p5/166 SMP box (yes they exist), and it
appears a little faster. KDE is very, very nice! The folks at
cheapbytes.com did a good job packaging the CD, too.
I have a few questions that are pretty silly, but annoying.
1) I can't figure out how to hang up the modem gracefully. I use
wvdial, which dows a great job configuring the modem, but there seems to
be no way to hang up short of killing the pppd daemon. Is this right?
2) In NS 4.5, how do I change the default font size? I seem to be
stuck with about 8 point fonts, which are reduced to a blur on my
ancient monitor.
3) In KDE, how do I make the font selection stick for the shell
windows? Every thime I boot, KDE defaults to these uge, ugly, bitmapped
fonts, and I have to reset every shell window to "small fonts".
4) I muddled through the kernel upgrade with no docs. Is there an FAQ
somewhere on what should be done? I seem to remember reading somewhere
that kerneld would go away and be replaced with kmod (??) but kerneld
still seems to get installed on my system. I wonder what else I'm

Thanks,

Jim,
I had similar problems the other day. I was playing around a friend's
hardware:
Diamond C300 Slot-1 motherboard ($39.00 from TCComputers)
ATI 3D Charger AGP 8Mg ($40.00)
Intel Celeron 333 (about $80.00)
other generic stuff, installed Debian 2.0 running X 3.3.1 or 3.3.2
(I forget which). Both the SVGA and Mach64 servers exhibited a lot
of distortion on the right half of the screen.
The solution was to go to www.xfree86.org and download the BINARIES
for just XF86_SVGA and XF86_MACH64 and put them in place of the old
binaries. Once I did that, the Mach64 server ran beautifully, as the new
version properly identified the Rage IIc chipset on the AGP bus.
The SVGA server really wasn't necessary... I downloaded it just in case.
This is a bit of a hack, but it worked on short notice, and there isn't
much of a better solution for getting hardware support from X 3.3.3
until the Debian package maintainers finish porting it to Debian.

Subject: Linux (so many flavours , what's difference?)
Date: Mon, 29 Mar 1999 08:51:26 GMT
I have some questions:
Q1:Can packages of slackware and Redhat be Interchanged i.e. compatibility
Q2:what is difference in kernels for different Linux flavours?
Q3:What is difference (technical) between Unix and Linux?
it seems ugly to me to ask for response via email but truly I lack intertnet
time but quite often checks my email account.
A lot of thanks for your kind attention.
