You mean you want that account exposed to the slings and arrows of
outrageous crackers and spammers? They could then use your machine to
send out spam to the whole world and you would be responsable for that.
You should not run a machine like that because it is dangerous to you
and a plague for the rest of the users of the Internet. Try to figure
out a better way to accomplish what you need.

Hi,

I'm a Linux newbie and would greatly appreciate any help anyone can
provide on this.  I'm trying to install Mandrake 6.1 on a new system
with a SCSI CD ROM drive (Toshiba 3701).  I have an adaptec 1505 ISA
card which worked fine under windows.  I boot from the floppy when I get
to the SCSI adapter screen I select Adaptec 152x.  Autoprobe fails to
detect the card, as is expected since the 1505 card has no BIOS.  When I
try "specify options" and type "aha152x=0x340,9,7,1" the CD ROM does
light up briefly but the install program reports "can't find device
anywhere on your system."

Any suggestions on what else to try?

Hint, 7.2 is the latest edition of Mandrake.

Afaik, 152x does not include 1505. 1505 appears not to be supported under
RedHat 7.0

Why not buy a new scsi controller, there is probably some reason why
no-one has written drivers for it.

Subject: Printing to an SMB Winprinter

Is it possible to print, over a network, to a Windoze98SE print server without
the proper printer drivers?  The printer in question is a Xerox P8 (No e). 
It's not just Linux that needs a driver for this thing -- My W2K machines can't
use it either!  It'd be nice if I could use the same solution for both Linux
and Windoze.  I was thinking, maybe there's a program I could run on the print
server to recieve the raw data and convert it as if it were being printed
directly from the that machine...  Does something like that exist, or is there
an easier solution?  Thanks!

suid scripts never have had suid functionality under linux. It's likely
tht your old scripts had a first line that evoked a special suid shell.


Also RH gave messed with their kernel. Details on demand ..

Sounds like a routing problem. Since it's a firewall, i'm assuming
they're both on separate networks. Make sure you have two network routes,
e.g.:

-> 10.10.27.0      0.0.0.0         255.255.255.128 U     0      0        0 eth1
-> 192.168.2.0     0.0.0.0         255.255.255.0   U     0      0        0 eth0
0.0.0.0         10.10.27.1      0.0.0.0         UG    0      0        0 eth1

Note that each network route should be going to different infterfaces.
If for some reason they are going to the same one, you would see the
problem you're describing. 

If not, there may be a routing conflict, where a packet can match two
different routes (this could happen if the two NICs or on the same
network). In that case, try bringing down the interface when you unplug
it (i.e. ifconfig eth0 down).

One more thing. When you take down the interface to your internet
connection, be sure to add a -n to your ping commands, so that it doesn't
try to do any reverse lookups. Otherwise is can look like an interface is
down.

On my debian box, I've got this in inittab

# Normally not reached, but fallthrough in case of emergency.
z6:6:respawn:/sbin/sulogin

In a rare instance, I've had run level 6 (which happens on a reboot) fail
to properly come to a halt. Maybe some service doesn't die right, or init
gets confused. sulogin will give you the oportunity to some maintanence
if that happens.

I don't know what's wrong, but I suspect recreating the default sawfish
config files will fix it.

rm -rf ~/.sawfish

While logged out of X. If that doesn't work, get rid of your .gnome*
files too. When you start X back up, those directories will be back to
their pristine original state.

If you're using the gnome display manager (gdm), you can play with
/etc/gdm/gdm.conf. Like changing the "HaltCommand" and "RebootCommand"
lines.

xtheater (xtheater.sourceforge.net) has better .avi support since it uses
the windows codecs to play them. Although if they're not working in
windows it may be a moot point.

Try ftp'ing in passive mode. ncftp does this by default.

Yep, there is (in theory). It is called GhostScipt (and RedMon). Both work 
together to tell the outside world "look, here's a PostScript Printer 
waiting for you to connect).
It is not easy to set up, but once set up, it works without any bigger 
problems. Just every other computer thinks, its printing to a Postscript 
printer on another computer.

I don't know about movies, but audio cd's don't have a normal
filesystem.

The file FAQ.txt that comes with the cdparanoia program explains a lot
of this under the "I can play audio CDs perfectly; why is reading the
CD into a file so difficult and prone to errors? It's just the same
thing." heading.
