I'm getting kind of tired of the flaky problems I've been
bumping into running Netscape on my Linux box... does anyone know if
there is a decent port (or successful workaround for making the
Solaris version work) of HotJava for the Linux platform?

I know one person who doesn't like big monitors because she
gets neck strains looking up and down the screen. Everybody else I've
bothered to survey favors big monitors--bigger than 15", in any case;
very large monitors (> 19") can take up enough desk space to be a
nuisance, and it can be difficult to place a 21" monitor such that you
don't feel lost in all that space.

I am running RH 5.1. I appear to have lost both the console login and
xterm. Here's the message I get when running xterm:
[root@portia /root]# xterm &
[1] 886
[root@portia /root]# xterm: error in loading shared libraries
/usr/i486-linux-libc5/lib/libXt.so.6: undefined symbol: _Xsetlocale
Xwindows is set up correctly; this used to work. I have since installed
WindowMaker; I am not sure if that installation hosed the libs or what.
Also I thought that libc5 was passe.
mingetty also quit working. I get an "operation not permitted" in the
log files. mingetty -r tty1 works fine.
There are no error messages other than this. This is my production
server. It runs fine as a server; I can log in via ssh.
Any ideas?

Actually, the fbset program sucks the big one. I know someone working
on a much more competent program. I will get in touch with him about
releasing it and see what he plans to do. Right now it functions pretty
good.
Personnally, I am having troubles with the fb device at 16bpp mode..the
color to the bg of ncurses programs is often green or blue when it
should be white, but yet the strings are printed with the right
backgrounds.

Maybe in your kernel (I'm using Mandrake 5.3, which is said to use RedHat
5.2). In any case, IP Masq is included, but you still need to recompile
your kernel to turn it on, as a mod or inclusion.
At least, that's what I found.

Actually, Notes will be released for Linux soon. Why not get in touch with
Lotus and check into what the status is for the release? I'm not a great
fan of Notes myself (it has been virtually a religion at the company where
I work for some years now), but it *does* do the job reasonably well and,
if that's what your company uses, why not try to minimize the
complications?

Here is an alternative if you don't need to know when someone right away
that someone
is trying to break in.
I cron the following script once a day, from /etc/cron.daily: (you could
run it as often as you like)
#!/bin/sh
grep fail /var/log/secure > /tmp/secure
grep refuse /var/log/secure >> /tmp/secure
grep warn /var/log/secure >> /tmp/secure
if [ -s /tmp/secure ]
then
cat /tmp/secure | elm -s 'secure' root@domain >> /dev/null

I installed Kernel 2.2.3, boot OK, but message say the iBCS as a module
is
not found. I had this iBCS started each time when booting my previous
kernel
2.0.35 on the same machine. Do I need to get a fresh iBCS and install it
or there
is someway I can locate it somewhere on my 486PC and run it under 2.2.3?

I crashed X yesterday evening and tried to recover using the new
sysrq key facilility in 2.2.x kernels. It all seemed to work,
except that I could not swap back from graphics mode to text
mode, so I eventually had to reboot.
When I checked /var/log/messages after rebooting there are
entries for the disk sync, killing all processes on the
terminal etc. There is even one from mgetty saying it
got an invalid character in the login name.
Am I missing something? Is there a way to force the screen
from graphics to text mode?

however, is an X server.
Is there a list of other apps that use the framebuffer anywhere?
Games, console image viewers, etc? Maybe someone implemented an
SVGAlib wrapper?

The GGI graphics library (fancied by game developers among others)
uses the framebuffer.

: More memory, more memory. Common with Netscape after heavy use on

: either.(latest kernel, libraries, etc.) 64MB and a 128MB swap

Actually, I have 96Megs of memory w/ a 64M swap partition (I think I read
somewhere that you should have twice the amount of swap space than you do
memory, but if you have a lot of memory (32 or 64M+ or something then you
only need about 64M swap tops).
