sounds good so far, but if your scanner is ID=5 then /dev/scanner ==>
/dev/sg4,
it starts with sg0....
The link is not related to what dmesg or cat /proc/scsi/scsi show.
I own a cheap crap mustang scanner (SCSI I) that runs without a
problem...:-)

You need some new aliases in /etc/modules.conf
in order to autoload correct modules ( assuming
you configured ppp support as modules ). I use 2
versions of /etc/modules.conf, and my boot scripts
create a symlink to the correct one based on the
loaded kernel version. Because the module names
are different, you can't use the same file.
You can also try using various syntax options
in modules.conf to try to pick the correct
modules - man modules.conf to figure it out.
Comparison of my modules.conf contents for 2.2.x
and 2.4.x kernel versions follows :
[jak@PcJak jak]$ cat /etc/modules.conf.2.2|grep ppp
alias ppp0 ppp
alias ppp-compress-21 bsd_comp
alias ppp-compress-24 ppp_deflate
alias ppp-compress-26 ppp_deflate
alias char-major-108 ppp
[jak@PcJak jak]$ cat /etc/modules.conf.2.4|grep ppp
#alias ppp0 ppp
alias ppp-compress-21 bsd_comp
alias ppp-compress-24 ppp_deflate
alias ppp-compress-26 ppp_deflate
alias tty-ldisc-3 ppp_async
alias tty-ldisc-14 ppp_synctty
alias char-major-108 ppp_generic
alias ppp0 ppp_async

If you want to let your Linux machine print to a remote printer, you
need to add an entry like so in your /etc/printcap :
rp1|Remote_Printer_1:\
:lp=/dev/null:sh:\
:sd=/var/spool/lpd/rp1:\
:rm=remote.printserver.hostname:rp=RMP1:
"rp1" is the default name for remote printer 1, separated from various
aliases for the same printer by |s. rm= is followed by the hostname or
IP address of the remote printserver. rp= is followed by the queue name
of the remote printer. There is no if= or af= in this entry because
this was cut-n-pasted from a printcap I used with a remote printer which
understood PostScript.
For further information, look at
http://linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Printing-HOWTO.html since that's very
comprehensive even if it's biased towards PDQ instead of lpr/lprNG/CUPS.
It covers printing to a remote printer, sharing printers to a 9x/NT
network via Samba, and all that good stuff.

How did you install it (RPM, tarball, compiled)? What version of Wine do
you have? What error messages does Wine give you? Does Wine even load,
or do you get a "wine: command not found" or similar message? (Also, it
would help to know where it was installed, if you might be able to find
out?) And finally, what programs have you tried to run w/ Wine? You need
to give out more information before reporting a Wine error. (P. S. Most
people post to comp.emulators.ms-windows.wine for Wine errors.)

I am trying to get Oracle 8i to load upon booting. I have a feeling that my problem
is a OS issue, not Oracle.
I have placed a script in /etc/rc.d/init.d called oracle8i. When I run "oracle8i

However, it doesn't work upon reboot or shutdown.
Can someone recommend a way to trap the error so I can figure out what's happening?
I looked in /var/log for relevant messages,

Thanks for any advice.

If memory were X size, and the swapper were 2X, and if you try to run 3X
worth of programs, do the heap allocation functions of some programs fail?
Or does the extra overcommitted memory get put somewhere else?

Subject: question on ftp
Date: Fri, 29 Dec 2000 19:34:07 GMT
Could someone help me with the following:
I have seen where people have set up ftp servers with real
user, that allow the users to log into specified dirs, and to limit
them to that dir structure only.
I am using RedHat Linux v6.0, and I found a section in a book
about configureing the /etc/ftpaccess file using the "guestgroup"
command. I have created a group in /etc/group called 'ftpuser'
and in the /etc/ftpaccess file I added the line "guestgroup ftpuser".
Also I have edited the /etc/passwd file to the following.
username:encrypted
password:500:128:username:/home/ftp/./username:/bin/false
I have edited the /etc/shells file to include the /bin/false
per the RedHat instructions, yet everytime username logs in I see the
message via ftp that no home dir could be found, and that home=/ .
Could someone please tell me what I'm doing wrong?
Thanks

I get an error message when I try to start netcfg on my newly
installed RedHat 6.2 machine.
The error message complains about Python and Kt and I have no clue as
to what that is.
How can I find out???
My Linux box needs ethernet configuration (IP address etc) but netcfg
won't start.
During install I unchecked a bunch of seemingly unnecessary
applications (who needs all this stuff anyway) and I may have
accidentally unchecked some important part of networking.
How can I get what is needed back short of reinstalling Linux?

I have 80MB, but it only recognized 64MB when I installed linux. I had to add the
"append" line to /etc/lilo.conf.
After adding it, you have to run lilo
[root@ /etc]# cat lilo.conf
boot=/dev/hda
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
prompt
timeout=50
default=linux
append="mem=80M"
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.12-20
label=linux
initrd=/boot/initrd-2.2.12-20.img
read-only

You do not say what kinds of files these are. If you have a variety of
files
/able/cony.x
/dubl/cuhh.g
/keouw/kdjk/vhhj
Then all you can do is go to each directory or list the files on teh
command line. On the other hand if you want to change all files with the
extention .jpg in a number of directories
chmod .... directory1/*.jpg
etc would do it. Or use the find command.
Be more specific for more useful help.

Subject: enlightenment questions
Date: Fri, 29 Dec 2000 20:05:46 GMT
I am an enlightenment newbie. Where can I find good user docs?
www.enlightenment.org doesn't seem to have much.
I'm running Mandrake/Gnome/Enlightenment and the specific problem I'm
having is this: I need to know how to control which epplets are started
automatically when I reboot/restart Enlightenment. Right now I have an
epplet that comes up whenever I restart Enlightenment called the E-
Mounbox. If I shutdown the E-Mountbox, it reappears when I restart
Enlightenment. If I shut down the E-Mountbox epplet and then start
another instance of the E-Mountbox epplet, the next time I restart
Enlightenment, I have *two* E-Mountboxes come up. Starting an E-
Mountbox epplet from the user menu seems to add a call to it to some
kind of Enlightenment session init script somewhere, but I can't seem
to find where.
Any ideas?
Thanks!

If it's a perl script and it's executable then you just need:
${HOME}/dev/test.pl
If you're running this from a login script then make sure that it's
run after the $home environmental variable has been set, probably safest
to run it after everything else.

It comes up the color of my foreground. If I occlude the xterm and

So far I have downloaded and printed some 2000 pages of HOWTO

What I wanted to have is a fairly secure Linux box for my www testbed

python is the language that the RH installer runs on, and is required by
netcfg.
Kt is a library.
But... you don't need netcfg to configure your network. It's just a GUI
front-end to the unix commands.
