Not a chance. Linux doesn't support any motherboards so you really should
get your motherboard out your computer. Don't replace it, but store it
somewhere for later use. Now you can try installing Linux.

::serious::
OK, serious now. I don't think any motherboard can give problems with Linux.
I also don't think any standard floppy drive can cause problems. Idem for a
powersuply, speakerset, processor, etc. etc. etc.

::humor::
If you have two buckets and one motherboard. You can ask: does the one
bucket fits into the other, but if you ask, can the bucket stand on the
motherboard, the answer is a little too obvious.

::serious::
Tell me if I'm wrong.

Thanks Marc,

I have printed out a few how-tos on xfstt, but none of them mentioned
ttmkfdir.

Am I barking the wrong tree?

I've just installed the new Mandrake 7.1 and I'm having some problems
with this version that I never had before with other versions of
Mandrake.
I've configured my kernel for SCSI EMULATION like I always did, I mean
this is not the first time I do it.
THE PROBLEM IS THAT I CAN WRITE, ERASE...CD-ROMS BUT I CAN NOT MOUNT
THEM.
I tried to miunt them as /dev/srX, /dev/scdX, /dev/hdX, like I used to
do in my Mandrake 7.0, but with no result.

Or the sync's are out of the screen's domain, or the resolution is too
high for the screen. Run the config-tools to select another screen (try
standards first - generic svga or something similar) and resolution.

1) Terminology question: Are you using the word "proper" to mean "correct"
(in the comp.lang.c sense of the word) ? That is, to mean "Following
recommended practice"? Or, does it mean something specific in the context
of shared libs - e.g., "complete" (aka, "stand alone").

2) I assume by "dependencies", you mean "list of files to be linked"
(because you wrote it as "-lc", which is compiler/linker syntax). In
the context of a Makefile, the word "dependency" means something else.

3) My initial reaction on seeing your post was "But then, where does it
end?" Surely, if I include the C lib, what about any other libs it
calls? (I.e., there's no guarantee that all the error messages I was
getting were about any particular lib)

Anyway, I just think one is better off w/o the "-z defs".

On a RedHat 5.2 i386 system I've upgraded to glibc-2.0.7-29.2.rpm as
described in the RedHat Security Advisory. Now it seems that changing the
effective uid no longer works:

- sshd terminated with an error 11 at the point where it tries to launch a
command (shell) with the target user's id.
- su also fails.
- maybe related: man segentation faults when it tries to read a man page

Any suggestions what to do? Is the new libc buggy?

Errrr ... this may be a new libc for RH5.2, but it's an old libc (the
prerelease version of glibc2) in fact. I presume RH have been making
occasional fixes to it, as a minor of 29 would indicate!

The obvious suggestion is to report the problem to the author of the
patches that RH have applied, and to RH itself. Why are you posting here?

You can't. IS09660 filenames are always upper-case, 8.3;1 format (8
charactes in the name, three in the type, and a version number). However,
if you enable Rock Ridge extensions, mkisofs will place a translation map
into the filesystem that maps the 8.3;1 format names to their original Unix
filenames.

I know, I also had this problem.
I downloaded RH6.2 ISO and unpacked it on my laprtop, then ran setup booted from
netimage.
And got this error message.
 How I solved it?

I installed VIA FTP. Go to redhat.com and then find mirrors, write down couple.
I propose you to use:

ftp.freesoftware.com --as FTP server
/pub/linux/redhat/redhat-6.2/i386 --as directory

But to do it, you need to have acces to the Internet via Nat router or something, or
Proxy would work oto.

and you should get no problem!

Good luck!

I'm afraid not. Slackware 4.0 uses libc5. The first release to use glibc2

Hope this helps...

This is a bug, and I have it too.
Try to submit it.

There is a solution though!
1. Set your panel to AutoHide

2. If you really don't want it to autohide, then you can use Middle Mouse button and
drag it
quickly in it's place.

It's a bug and I hope they'll find it too.

What does "dmesg" show (it should show a section where it finds the
hardware, as IDE, and a later section, where it probes the SCSI bus and
finds the scsi drive)? What does "cdrecord -scanbus" show?

I was having the same problem you describe, except that I only noticied it when
upgraded
to netscape 4.75. The netscape faq site said to try this

ln -s /usr/share/zoneinfo /usr/lib/zoneinfo

I did, at now netscape reads the correct timezone info instead of showing GMT.

Let me know if it works for you

So what can I do with my extra CPU cycles? Any 'extra cycles for peace'

idle, it's such a shame to think that it could be solving some of my other

good use for them....

Hmm... I suppose an possibility would be say 'byte-compiling' things [like
emacs does] for later runtime efficiency...

I suppose I could tell it to check & defragment
my disks or something, but that entails wear on disk heads (and the guide
book says isn't really necessary with Linux) whereas say, cracking pi to
the nth decimal wouldn't cause any wear, but I would more likely hinder
rather than help in that effort,
plus, maybe they've got it down 'to the subatomic level' and it wouldn't
help to crack it anymore?

Situation: computer mostly off-line, powered up 5 hours a day reading
these silly articles :-)...
Off afternoons [mandatory, lightning storms.]

Hmmm, wait, I'm timidly into GPS and astronomy, perhaps I could have it
compile an immediate version of a sky chart for my personal area, which
would be too slow real-time..?

Or maybe it's OK to not be computing everything, all the time.

latest issue of perl journal has a great article on mail filtering. in your

you need to install the Mail::Audit module which in turn needs

There is a graphical program called Abit CC http://salebios.tiger2.net/~aug/
but it seems to be dependant on the 2.2.15 kernel and didn't work properly
with my 2.2.16.
