On our network we have a big Solaris 2.5.1 server
(nfs V3 and v2).
most workstation are solaris 2.5
the NIS+ server with NIS compatibility is on Solaris 2.5
recently I've added Linux nodes
using kernel 2.0.36 from RedHat 5.2 and Suse6.0,
with autofs, amd, and NIS.
when I use a tool called CSSC (clone of SCCS)
the solaris 2.5.1 server hangs.
I've tested on some 2.5 server and it work perfectly.
I've run the "delta" program from cssc and it seems to do nothanks in advance
lockf(), yet it fork() and do something I ignore.
it seems to hand when doing an unlink() which is perfectly
ilogical (maybe is the server crashed meanwhile)...
I've seen so many thing around lockd problems arounf linux and solaris
that I think they are involved.
note that the linux is only a client in this case.
are ther some patches for solarsi 2.5.1, for linux...
could you give me some info, pointers, solutions.

This libstdc is actually available at ftp.suse.com in the applix updates
directory. Its needed by applix for a glibc install I believe but it should
suffice for your needs also.

Okay... I had the same problem, but since no one could directly help me, I'll help
you. I'll
spell it out as best I can, assuming you are/were as quasi-new to linux as I was
before I
learned how to do it. This is what you need to do. Rest assured, I know it works,
and you can
get what ever resolution and color depth you desire.
First, download a recent kernel version (I have 2.2.4, but I think versions as old as
2.1.x
will work). Additionally, download the frame buffer X server, both at:
kernel: http://www3.us.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.2/
driver: http://www.uno.edu/~adamico/banshee/files/XF68_FBDev.libc6.tar.gz
Next, you'll need to install the kernel and modify it to use the frame buffer device
driver...
this process is amply described at
http://www.lh.umu.se/~bjorn/linux/howto/Kernel-HOWTO.html,
(to install kernel), and http://www.uno.edu/~adamico/banshee/ to set the frame buffer
device...
You should have no problems, but if you do, email me and I can elaborate. Also, you
can refer
to http://www.redhat.com/knowledgebase/kb/cache/37.html for additional help.
Oh, (with reference to another posted follow up message): I suggest you setup X using
xf86config to use your card initially with the vga16 driver (option #2 when asked
which server
to use with your card... if you need help with xf86config, mail me)... then edit
XF86Config in
the /etc/X11 directory and make sure all of the listings for the various servers point
to the
Generic VGA card and not the one it asks you to configure in xf86config... you'll see
what I
mean if you haven't tried it... it's not hard to do, but again, mail me if you need
the help.
That should get X up in 800x600x16 mode...when you get to the point where you need to
run the
"make config" command, use the "make xconfig" command... it's a whole hell of a lot
easier.
Trust me.

Yes, No (it's worked right out of the box, after a small amount of fiddling

But it IS usable... Just a tad slow.

I thought that most of the time you did not have to use nohup. I have
simulation programs that I run as a.out & and they stay going after
I logoff. Might be that ping is finishing too fast? Make sure to
use as a test a program that you know for sure will run say 10 min

Subject: SuSE 6.0 and ipppd problems
Date: 31 Mar 1999 14:44:59 +0200
Hi all,
So I have a new SuSE 6.0 system installed on my machine and I am
trying to get the ppp set up working with the Teles 16.3 (non-PnP)
ISDN card working.
So I do everything from YaST: tell it my IP number, the gateway, point
to point partner, number to dial in to, user name, password, etc. I
also telling it to do a "manual" dial in so that the machine will not
connect by itself (this is very important). All of this goes quite
fine and I like YaST do its tests and they all pass.
Now as root I do a /sbin/isdnctrl dial ippp0 and the machine dials in
just fine and everything is nice. Then to hang up I do a
/sbin/isdnctrl hangup ippp0. Then to test and see if this works I try
to ping a machine and low and behold the machine is still connected
(or so I thought).
In reality the machine did disconnect from the "hangup" command but
upon doing the ping command the machine dialed in by itself again. So
I check all of the configuration files that SuSEconfig modifies and
they all look normal (dialmode=manual and such). So right now I am at
a loss for things to do. Has anyone else out there had this problem?
I would be very greatful for any insight I could get in this matter,
thanks.

8MB with any recent version of Netscape? Forget it.
My house mate runs netscape on a 486DX2/66 with 32MB of RAM and it all fits,
that is, doesn't start paging to disk, unless a Java applet is invoked.
This is Netscape 4.07 just as it came with RedHat 5.2, but with KDE as the
window environment. KDE is a resource hog though.
It's not very fast, but it's useable. You _need_ at least 1024x768
resolution and preferably more than 1MB of video card so you can do
16 bits/pixel. Video acceleration of some kind is a must. My house
mate's machine has an ATI Mach32 1MB video card in it and it's fine except
for the 8 bits/pixel, colours look really grainy, much worse than the
8 bit/pixel environment on my Sun workstation at work.

I am having a problem getting getty to run on /dev/tty1-9.
I've tried mingetty and mgetty; both start and immediately exit. There
are no error messages; nothing is in the logs; mgetty -x9 does not even
generate a log file.
Mgetty does put a login prompt on the console, but promptly (pun

I can log in via ssh or Xwindows with no problems.
Any ideas? What other software is requried to run the gettys? Login?
Thanks.

I have RH5.2. Some questions...
- I noticed when I had the other video board, I could move my mouse around
the screen and the screen would scroll smoothly. Now it is divided into
four sections and I have to pull my mouse to the edge to "switch" to the
other screens. Irritating. Is this a function of the card (ram?) or is
it a setting?
- Even tho I have that mouse utility not running, many times
right-clicking on something does not make it "active". What's up?
- When cdrom is mounted, can I run the cron.daily on it so that a "locate"
command will scan the cdrom also?
- I'm using fwmd. Why the hell aren't my desktop prefs saved when I
return?
- I can create a button bar (system utils, prefs, etc) with fwmd, but I
can't move them to a different spot on the screen. Any ideas?
- Clicking on the X frequently doesn't close something down. I have to
pick "kill" or "close" from the toolbar to end it. Help?
- Extra Credit: I read the "man sqrt" and aside from #include <math.h>,
I can't understand how the syntax runs. Can anyone give a super-short
example just to demonstrate the syntax?
Thanks to anyone who answers any of these. For the record, I read the man
pages voraciously but sometimes it seems that the more I read the more
questions I have. I've tried to only ask things here that involve things I
simply didn't know where to *look* for an answer.

Are we talking about IP forwarding or e-mail forwarding? Huge difference.
> Where can I find this configuration?
The Linux IP forwarding switch for Linux is
/proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward (1=on, 0=off).
If you want to change the state permanently then change the config
files for the distribution you have. For example in SuSE you'd alter
the "IP_FORWARD=" line in /etc/rc.config.
If you are talking about e-mail you'll have to give a lot more
information about what you are trying to achieve.

You should just use XKB instead of disabling it and

Just set the layout in your XF86Config file. For
a French keyboard:
XkbLayout "fr"

The "user" keyword in the appropriate fstab entries. Not there by default
in RedHat.
Also make sure the file system type for the floppy is "vfat".

I believe that SuSE 6 is a great distribution for new folks. It offers a
lot of applications, a nice configuration tool, and the available support
network online is pretty nice. We have a whole group of mailing lists which
offer consistently excellent support for all ranges of user. ImO, the
suse-linux-e mailing list is the most fun and informative resource I have found
for learning the SuSE way.

Realize, of course, that a screensaver - in the true sense of the word - would
turn off your screen, or at least blank it out. What you're really asking for
is a program to display images randomly selected from a directory of images.
# xv -random -max -wait 5 /some/directory/*
This will run "xv", tell it to randomly select an image, maximize the size to
suit the screen, wait 5 seconds and do it again.

How did you download the .rpm files? If you used FTP, make sure that you
specify "binary" or "image" mode download, vs. the default "ASCII" mode.
Ensure that the size of the file you have is the same size as the file on the
remote system. Maybe the download didn't complete?

I'm seeing it also. I'm running XFree86-3.3.3.1-1 and kernel 2.2.1-5. I've
got an S3-Virge card, but I'm using the SVGA server. Have you gotten any
other feedback? It's a pain in the *ss to have to reboot X every day or so.
Right now top shows this for X:
PID USER PRI NI SIZE RSS SHARE STAT LIB %CPU %MEM TIME COMMAND
5154 root 13 0 115M 59M 1516 R 15M 2.3 63.2 55:33 X
That's a little excessive.
