I would take it one step at the time: if the cards use different modules,
uninstall one module at the time, so that the kernel would see one card only.
You can also physically uninstall one card, leaving the other card in the
machine, to test it.
If your cards work separately, see if you can load the modules with options, to
use a different base address. You can find module specific information in
/usr/src/linux/Documentation. Double check with http://lhd.zdnet.com/ to see if
you're using the right modules.
Also, if your internal net is 10.10.0.0, delete the routes to 10.10.0.1 and
10.0.0.0 and just add a route to 10.10.0.0
route del -host 10.10.0.1 dev eth1
route del -net 10.0.0.0 dev eth1
route add -net 10.10.0.0 dev eth1
I put together a sort of tutorial for configuring an external+internal network
(including IP masquarading). You can find it here:
http://www.cse.msu.edu/~minutsil/Linux/networking

This info comes from /etc/sysctl.conf. If you want your machine to be able to
forward packets (e.g. for ip masquarading) you need to set
net.ipv4.ip_forward=1. My /etc/sysctl.conf looks as follows:
12) root:/etc> more sysctl.conf
# Disables packet forwarding
net.ipv4.ip_forward = 1
# Enables source route verification
net.ipv4.conf.all.rp_filter = 1
# Disables automatic defragmentation (needed for masquerading, LVS)
net.ipv4.ip_always_defrag = 1
# Disables the magic-sysrq key
kernel.sysrq = 0

RH 7.0 does come with more bugs than other RH versions, or other
distributions. There are some bugs even in the install program and if you
don't know how to get round them you can't even install.
However, despite all these bugs I still like 7.0 better than 6.2. Many of
the initial problems have already been fixed (glibc, gcc, etc.), just
follow the updates. RH7.0 also has enhanced security by having portsentry
run by default. I was very frustrated with g++-2.96 and I thought it was a
very bad idea, but what do you know, after I made a few changes to my code
(supposedly compatible to the standard c++) and after I installed the
patched gcc, all works beautifully, even threads with c++. Many new
versions of development libraries (e.g. gtk+) with more functionality, have
been included with RH7.0, which I think it was a bold idea. Just let them
fix the bugs!
I'm really looking forward for a stable RH distribution with the 2.4
kernel. Maybe 7.2.
Enough said. I don't want to turn this thread into a "best distro"
discussion.

I configured my HP laserjet4 with printtool, using the HP Laserjet
4/5/6 drivers. When I print an ASCII file now I get:
"No way to print this type of input file: fsav (linux) virus (8293-117)"
Then if I vi the file and add an empty line at the top & bottom, it
prints fine.
Suggestions?

both don't work. I will reinstall the system and use my backup of 24-11-

Try: modprobe ne io=0x300
Then you'll have to setup ifconfig.
But then you'll have to do something to make it happen each time you
reboot.
If you have linuxconf, it will do all the work for you. (Or, Redhat
has a utility, run in X, called "netcfg". It's on the gnome menu in the
category "Another Level".)

It's probably too late, since you're off on your WINE adventure, but
StarOffice can show powerpoint files. (At least the set that I tried.)

You don't need to be at superuser level for -q to make top run with no
delays between updates. It's only the priority boosting effect that
requires superuser privileges. Exactly as the man page says.
And yes top _will_ use up all available CPU at that level. By passing it
-q, you've asked it to start one update as soon as the previous one has
finished. It's in essentially a tight CPU-bound loop updating it's data,
so why _wouldn't_ it be using up all available CPU time? My advice would
be to either quit using -q, or use nice to bump it's priority down so
it doesn't suck cycles away from useful programs.

Can anyone tell me how to compile ghostscript on my pentium pro, gcc
2.95.3, Mandrake 7.2?
After a mass of warnings, I get an error:
/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lXt
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make: *** [obj/gs] Error 1
The how-to instructions say
With gcc version 2.6.3 or later, you may encounter an incompatibility in
object formats (a.out vs. ELF) with the XFree86 library. Typically, ld
complains that some X library is not found, or that many Xlib or Xt
functions are not found in the library (similar to the messages for
omitting SM and ICE from XLIBS). Or you get a message when you start
Ghostscript that the program or the shared library is an unrecognized
format.
If this happens, edit unix-gcc.mak to add the switches "-b i486-linuxaout"
to both CFLAGS and LDFLAGS, then "make clean" followed by "make"). If this
doesn't help, or if other strange things happen, contact your Linux
supplier or support resource.
I tried this, with no success.

Try removing your .gtkrc -- xfce has its own gtk engine, and your gtk
settings are still trying to use it.

Subject: Weird LILO problem
Date: Sun, 31 Dec 2000 17:11:28 GMT
Hi,
I have an old 486 DX2-66 generic compter with 32 megs
of ram. Now I am using an IBM 1080 mb hard drive. It
had Slackware 7.0 on it and it booted off the hard drive
with lilo with no problems. I have also had a Debian 2.1
on a Samsung 1.5 gb drive and I have also had
a Fujitsu 528mb drive with Redhat 5.1 on it. All the
hard drives booted with lilo.
I just installed Redhat 6.1 on the sole 1080 IBM drive
and can't get lilo to boot the drive. I get "LI" on the
screen while it's booting and then the system hangs.
I have tried the options in lilo, such as, "linear" and
"compact" to no avail.
I have even installed the new lilo 21.5 which does
not have the 1024 cylinder boundry, still, it won't
boot from the hard disk, but it will boot from the
floppy.
What could be the issue?
Does using or not using the keyword "linear" in the
Linux origional install of lilo effect how the hard drive
is formatted?
Thanks
Mike

Sendmail seems to be running in the background so it shouldn't cause you
any problems.
I seem to remember disableing sendmail at startup, (but maybe that was
before the upgrade a few months ago), but it hasn't caused me any problems.

What is the source of the ASCII file? It might be that the filter
that printtool installed does not recognize the line endings or
accented characters.... Keep in mind that Linux uses a Line Feed
(^J, 11 ASCII) to end a line, Max use a Carraige Return (^M, 13 ASCII),
and DOS/Windows machines (last I looked) use a CR/LF pair.

Hi. I'm afraid that this question is a RTFM, but after doing so I'm
still feeling lost in the dark.
I'm running linux 2.2.17 with glibc-2.1.3 on a Pentium-II, with a 3dfx
Voodoo 3-2000 agp card. I'd like to build and install X 4.0.2 from
source. What drivers or other files do I need to accomodate my
graphics card? I'm not a hard-core linux gamer, so I don't think I
need DRI. (Am I mislead to have assumed this?) I see all sorts of
drivers at http://linux.3dfx.com but I can't figure out which ones I
need. Any guidance would be tremendously appreciated.

I had the same problem after installing xfce, rathing than wasting
too much time on tracking down why, I just copied those files from
/usr/lib/gtk/themes/engines to /usr/local/lib/gtk/themes/engines. If
that's where it's expecting to find those files then so be it. I
didn't try a sym link, though - that might also do the trick....
