First of all, thanks Marcel and David for responding.

I've run lsmod and gotten the following.

Module Size Used by
ppp 18316 2 (autoclean)

vfat 11516 1 (autoclean)

soundlow 300 0 [sound]
soundcore 2372 3 [sound]

*Note* parport pc and parport lp aren't there. But lp is.

When I cat /etc/conf.modules I get:

alias eth0 3c59x
alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc
pre-install pcmcia_core /etc/rc.d/init.d/pcmcia start
alias ppp0 3c59x

options cs4232 io=0x534 irq=5 dma=1 dma2=0 mpuio=0x330 mpuirq=7

*NOTE* my errorlog states
modprobe: can't locate module ppp-compress-21
modprobe: can't locate module ppp-compress-26
modprobe: can't locate module ppp-compress-24

This suggests to me that conf.modules isn't being read. Is that possible?
Running modprobe lp doesn't solve the problem.

I appreciate the help so far and hope you guys can point me in the right
direction.

Subject: Re: Old versions of Slackware

I've installed Slack 3.1 (2.0.27 kernel) on much lighter hardware than
that (386/33 8 Megs, though I did have a decent 100 Meg HD).
Ran great in character mode. X was a tad slow... The
Slackware home site at ftp.cdrom.com keeps several older versions
of Slack in their ftp archive. A quick glance at the earliest
version they have available, 3.3, indicates that with 9 diskettes
for A and 6 for N, you should be able to install these packages
without difficulty even under your current restricted
disk footprint of 45 Megs. Moreover, this teeny system will
seem blisteringly fast when you've finished, even with 8 Megs
of memory.

Cheers,

I have a few templates to do that, at my home page.
I will leave one of them at bottom, just in case.

you must chdir to /etc/smrsh and place there, or a copy of vacation,
or a symlink to it. example:

        cd /etc/smrsh
        ln -s /usr/bin/vacation .

c ya.

Hi Gilberto:

These are just a couple of thoughts -- I'm not too comfortable with this
myself yet.

First thing to try: you don't mention whether you "unmuted" the mixer
channels. You may want to run the "amixer" utility that comes in the
alsa-utils package:

    amixer

will list all the channels, their setting, and "mute" if each is muted.
I think the important ones are Master and PCM, but you may want to
unmute all of them. If you have a GUI mixer, this will be much easier.
Otherwise, use commands like:

    amixer set Master 100 unmute
    amixer set PCM 100 unmute

(100 is too high, but that will just set the channel to its maximum
volume.)
Note that you have to do this each time the modules are loaded. If you
get your sound working, you can have the mixer channels load with
settings that you like automatically with instructions from the ALSA FAQ
at http://www.alsa-project.org/~jfulmer/alsa-faq.html. See question
3.5.

Another possibility: after editting the /etc/conf.modules, how many of
the oss-emulation modules did you "modprobe"? I don't know whether all
of these are necessary, or if some of them load themselves because of
dependencies from others, but you may want to try:

    modprobe snd-card-ens1371
    modprobe snd-mixer-oss
    modprobe snd-seq-oss
    modprobe snd-pcm-oss
    modprobe snd-seq-oss
    modprobe snd-pcm-oss

(Actually, the amixer step has to come after the modprobe's -- I was
just assuming you had done the modprobes, at first.)

If this works, you should even be able to just write sound files to the
sound devices, like
   cat myfile.au > /dev/audio
   cat otherfile.wav > /dev/audio

The osstest.tar.gz utility at the ALSA ftp site is also really good.

If there's anyone reading this posting who does understand more about
which modules have to be in conf.modules, which have to be modprobe'd,
or anything else you see wrong here, please let me know!

Hope this helps,
- Andy

I installed JDK 1.2.2 last night. I decompressed the tar file into my home

pages, my browser tells me it recognizes the Applet tag but cannot run the
applet. Any suggestions? Thanks!

but each time when I use lpr to print, the finished

anybody know what is wrong with my config? how to fix it?

Your fetchmail tries to forward retrieved messages to smtp port
on localhost. Smail reject initial EHLO (start Extended SMTP session),
fetchmail tries HELO (start SMTP session) BUT smail does not
like hostname fetchmail uses after HELO (localhost).

QUICK FIX:
use -mda option fetchmail provides and call sendmail (sendmail
look alike provided by smail) directly with no SMTP session.
See "man fetchmail" for details.

That should be 'tic terminfo.src', AFAIK. 'infocmp' does just the
opposite, ie. it generates a human-readable ASCII file out of the
compiled (binary) terminfo entry.

He probably meant that "legions of hackers" (in the correct, positive
sense) are reading /., which is, to a certain extent, equivalent to a
DDOS attack. IOW, /. is simply overloaded. ;-)

Subject: DualBoot NT/Linux.. (Was: Re: Boot loader)
Date: Fri, 25 Feb 2000 11:03:17 -0500

Hi there,

There is a fairly easy way to get linux to boot from the NT Loader
(you can also use this method to get Win9x to boot from the NT
Loader if you install it on, say, hda4 after you've already got
a running NT/Linux system!). This assumes your NT installation
is on the first partition (say, /dev/hda1)

1. After booting into linux (with your boot disk), login as root.

2. Install LILO on your linux root partition (not the MBR)

3. My Linux root partition is on /dev/hda2, so I run the command:

    dd if=/dev/hda2 of=boot.lnx bs=512 count=1

   The parms are:
   - in file = /dev/hda2
   - out file = boot.lnx
   - block size = 512 bytes
   - count = 1
This creates an 512 byte image of the root partition boot sector.

4. Copy this file (boot.lnx) to an msdos floppy (or something that is
    readable in NT).

5. Reboot into NT, then login as Adminstrator

6. locate the file c:\boot.ini, and remove the S and R attributes:

    attrib -R -S boot.ini

7. Copy the boot.lnx to the C:\ directory

8. Edit boot.ini, so it resembles this:

    [boot loader]
    timeout=30
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Windows NT"
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Windows NT [VGA.."
    C:\boot.lnx="Slackware Linux on /dev/hda2"

9. once you've saved boot.ini, replace the S and R attributes

    attrib +S +R boot.ini

10. Fin.

Pretty easy eh? :) I thank linuxdoc.org for this information.

Regards,

James.

Works perfect, "./xdm start" even starts it again.

Well rather quick and rather dirty! I'd like to know how(where) I can
remove xdm from the boot init and use startx instead.

What's the best way to read the HOWTO's, hopefully without first
decompressing.
