Ok, here's a rather unusual question, maybe some
of you will get a kick out of. I want to know if it's
possible to have netscape be a primary mail client
while at the same time I can use pine, but they both
access the same mail files/directories? Does netscape
and pine have similar mail reading/storing
functionality?
The reason for this question is that I recently got a
cable modem at home and as anyone who knows
about cable modems would know, they do not allow
remote telnet access to check mail and such. Well,
since my machines are on all the time anyway, I figured
I could just telnet into my linux box and use pine when
I'm away from home and when I'm at home i could use
netscape mail client because i prefer that in X.
However, the dilemma exists of checking mail. I keep
many of my messages for a while and I want to be able
to store them all in the same location for both mail
clients to be able to use. So is this possible? And if it
is how would I go about doing it? Would it be just a
matter of setting up pine so it points to the same mail
directory as netscape mail does? And what possible
negative effects might this cause if any?
Please let me know if you have any ideas. Thanks.

I recommend socks5 for a firewall not bad I am using it. Goto
www.filewatcher.org and search for socks5*rpm this is a preconpiled preinstalled
proxy/firewall thatyou just need to configure.

That doesn't sound right. The implication is that objects compiled on NT
with a native compiler will run on i386 Linux. It seems to me that you
would have to build/acquire a cross compiler that runs on NT as the
original question stated.

Backups will not be a problem for this -- most of the data is coming
initially from cdroms and is not read/write. It's more flexible
for us to make one huge volume available rather than a jukebox of
cd readers since we can selectively use any left over space for
read/write *if* it's needed. Next year when we submit the new
budget proposal, a DLT or AIT tape drive will be in the works(I
didn't put it in this year because we weren't supposed to need it
yet, but then management decided to go in a different direction
on me... oh well).
One respondent made a suggestion to go with SCSI for the drives, and
for the long term, I have to agree that SCSI is a better solution.
The problem is that the head of the department can pinch a penny
until it screams -- convincing him to go with SCSI will take some
doing, but it's not impossible.
When I find out how long we'll be using the machine, I'll be able
to justify some higher costs since we sometimes set these things
up temporarily(6 months or less). The longer the term, the more
they'll be willing to spend(thanks to moore's law :).

I enabled SUID on /sbin/shutdown. I'm the only one who uses

Subject: Linux time - human readable form?
Date: Thu, 17 Jun 1999 10:44:36 -0400
Hi,
I tried a while back to get a list of all my installed rpms with the
idea that I would set up a cron job to keep track of my installations
using this:
rpm -qa --queryformat %{NAME}' '%{DISTRIBUTION}' '%{VERSION}'
'%{INSTALLTIME}'\n'
It works fine and produces output like this:
redhat-release Manhattan 5.2 912184371
grep Manhattan 2.2 898629532
ash Manhattan 0.2 912184086
xforms-devel (none) 0.88.1 898973940
mtv (none) 1.0.7.7 912878943
My question is how can I convert the linux time into a human readable
form, instead of, e.g., 912184371?
Appreciate your help,
Glenn

Whoa is me. I have had some success but many failures. I have purchased a
number of brighty colored manuals from large book store chains. I am
learning but slowly.
I have RH5.2 on an Abit BX6 mobo, 64 meg, Celeron 300a stable at 450mhz.
Promise UDMA/66 card WD 41800 18gig HD udma4 on primary master, 3 gig WD
udma2 on primary slave. Matrox Mellinia G200 AGP 8 megs. CDrom and HPRW on
mobo controller.
Used the Mini Howto to enable the drives on the Promise card by passing
(ide2=0xb000,0xb402 ide3=0xb800,0xbc02) to the kernel while booting off a
floppy. Then was able to install and am running Linux now using this method.
Am using 2.0.36-7 kernel but cannot get to any config to enable or patch to
recognize Promise card, hell I don't know enough to determine exactly what I
have to do to get it working so LILO will dual boot with win98. I dnlded
2.0.37 but when I use the make program I get
"`No targets. Stop.'
The former means that you didn't provide any targets to be built on the
command line, and make couldn't find any makefiles to read in. The latter
means that some makefile was found, but it didn't contain any default target
and none was given on the command line. GNU make has nothing to do in these
situations. "
Whats next.
I have got PPP to dial and logon to my provider but I cannot access any of
the web using ping or Netscape etc. Its like no DNS servers are configured
but as far as I can tell they are.
I have had some success, I fooled around for days trying to get the Matrox
card to work with X windows, then I managed to upgrade to the latest version
of X86 and finally that is working.
I used rpm to install and configure KDE it is working fine.
Any help and suggestions will be appreciated . I am going to install Linux
on the laptop I have an extra removable 2 gig hd I am going to use. It is a
Gateway LS2300.
Help Me Rhonda or anyone.

IIRC the original version of the VAX cluster was 10 nodes, either Processors

Can you build something similar with NT? Can you build something similar
with Linux? (What happens when you want to expand the cluster? IIRC you
can only cluster 2 NT machines. Even then it's debatable if it's
anything like a VAX cluster.)

Hi
My problem is hard to explain...so there it is:
First, my WWW user is "www" (without password) (The www server is Apache of
course!)
I have a Perl CGI script that call a little client application (from a third
party), that application connect to a server and return some datas. Then my
cgi display those data on a web page. That is what it supposed to do!
When I am log in as the "www" user (ex. with telnet from a remote machine),
and I call the cgi from the command line (perl), everything works well!
But when I try to call the cgi from a browser.....error! (of course I tried
other command line, like "ls", and it works fine)
I have to tell that the client application is using PGP incription. I try to
give access to all the files needed to the "www" user.
And in the httpd error log I find:
-simple PGP error: 51 SIMPLEPGP_RNGNOTSEEDED ( Unseeded RNG) srsio
can't sign message
(srsio is the name of the client application)
I supposed it's a permission problem, but I can't find anything. Maybe it's
a stupid error but I'm relatively new to unix so....
I need help. What's the differences from loggin as the "www" user and using
a browser?
Please reply to my personal address too.

The book "Maximum RPM", p. 77 gives this doozie:
[user@ravel robolog]$ rpm -qa --queryformat '%{installtime}

Pipe the rpm output to this:
perl -pe 's/(\d+)\s*$/localtime($1)."\n"/e'
to get this:
redhat-release Manhattan 5.2 Fri Nov 27 11:32:51 1998
grep Manhattan 2.2 Tue Jun 23 15:18:52 1998

I recommend you keep those... They can be rather useful, and are quite
secure.

Subject: A few problems w/ Red Hat 6.0
Date: Thu, 17 Jun 1999 09:52:15 -0400
Take it easy on me - I am a Linux Virgin!
I just finished my first installation of Red Hat 6.0.The first problem I am
having is with Lilo, it will not work. I get an error during installation
saying there was a problem with the bootloader program. I try the different
settings but to no avail. I ended up skipping it and now everytime I bootup
I have to use a boot disk, otherwise I get a missing operating system
message. Plus booting from the disk takes forever.
The second thing is once I get into Xwindows, the display is poor quality.
it looks like it is on a very low resolution and it is very grainy. I looked
around but could find anything pertaining to this issue. How can I change
the resolution?
Thank you in advance for your help.

Shrinking borders simply aren't acceptable.

Well, modulo the fact that M$ doesn't have to pay for licensing Windows.
