For some reason my posting via my ISP isn't being sent to the newsgroups, so
I'm sending my solution via dejanews, anyway...
Yes! I sloved the problem, by installing the very latest XFree86, Xconfig
and fvm2 packages I get startx working! The latest XFree86 has the 'drivers'
for the Permedia 2 cjipset in my video card.

I got it to compile, then when I ran it, it
first asks me for my mouse type, then crashes with a message like:
IOCTL error, and i have to reboot
Any ideas what's wrong? Could it be my video card?
I have a ATI 3D Rage Pro.

Moving everything down by two bytes will not work. The partition table
itself at 0x1be-0x1fd seems to be ok with the exception of 2 bytes at
0x1c0-0x1c1. However, MBR is loaded with 2-byte dublications which might
relect a two-byte move upwords at some point. What is in the beginning of
MBR before the partition table? I have tried to look for pointers to the
contents of the first part of MBR but have not found any.

To start using the NT again, could I:
- zero everything before 0x1be ?
- correct the two bytes at 0x1c0-0x1c1 ?
- zero the extra magic bytes at the end of the sector ?
- let NT repair diskettes correct the beginning of MBR (before 0x1be) ?
And finally, any clues to the original cause of this problem ?

Hi Alicia,
Good chance you're running with only 256 colors (or less?)
Try starting up X with the command:
% startx -- -bpp 16
If your machine balks at this you may need to tweak your
X configuration - try running Xconfigurator (if you're running
RedHat) and choosing a setting with more colors or bits per/pixel.

No-one answered so I'll answer it myself!
Kernel 2.2.2 does support for AWE 32 so I was okay there.
The problem was that playmidi requires extra arguments to run with AWE
device
# playmidi -a "file.mid"
or
# playmidi -e -D0 "file.mid"
(do cat /dev/sndstat to see sndcard details - you might require D1 or
D2 or ...in the above)
works!

I'm not quite with you here. I do have an external modem, but don't
see how I can connect one PC's serial port to the other PC's modem if
the other PC already has the serial port of the modem connecting it to
its serial port? The modem only has one serial port right?
I'm probably missing the point entirely eh?

I assume when I do a modprobe lp

I've read parport.txt and edited conf.modules

io=0x3f8 irq=auto

to no avail.
any hints?

And your idea means the end of all innovation in design, since you're
arguing that everybody should get together, decide to do things all
the same way, and then leave it that way -- regardless of how well or
poorly it works. "A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little
minds," to borrow from Emerson.
Windows 95/98 is a perfect example of the push for consistency at the
expense of efficiency. It makes far more sense to me to allow people
to choose designs that work best for them. I use emacs and not vi
because I like the emacs operational design and I don't like the vi
operational design. In the WinDOS environment, I have almost no
choice among editors because they're all designed to work the same way
- -- the fact that it's a crappy & inefficient way of working was not
allowed to get in the way of the push for `consistency.' So, you can
do your work the same inefficient way in about 14 different programs.
Whoopee.

Makes perfect sense. When you mount a filesystem on a directory,
whatever is in that directory disappears - it's hidden under the mounted
filesystem. When you umount that filesystem, the directory magically
appears. The root of the filesystem gets plugged in where the directory
"used to be".
If you're using a hd as a backup, you should keep umounted to prevent
accidents except when you're doing the backup.

Bang away at Linux for a while and do things with it which you think others will
want to do. Once you've solved these problems for yourself, you'll be able to
help others with the same sorts of problems. Admittedly, you may have better
luck finding help desk work in the Windows world.
Check out IBM, they're getting into Linux.

If your libqt.so.1 was not installed by RPM, your RPM database would not
have record for it and it would complain although you do have the file.
You can install your splay without checking the database for dependence
i.e. rpm -i --force splay.rpm

You should do "tar xvf <filename>". The "f" is important since it tells
tar that the next argument is your file name. Otherwise, tar just waits
there for your keybroad inputs.

You mean like after writing the partition table dump to /dev/sda
instead of /tmp/sda ...
[...]

It cannot hurt to have complete dump around and yes, this includes
/dev. As far as /var is concerned, you might include the directories
since to get the ownerships and permissions right can be a pain
but exclude the logfiles and all that is in spool like /var/spool/smail
or /var/mqueue, /var/spool/lp or /var/mail.
You can skip /tmp altogether, its permissions and ownership are
clear enough and I do not backup stuff that can be easily restored
by other means like /usr/src/linux.
Some things that can cause trouble ... /etc/mtab, you do not want
to overwrite that one for instance.
For the rest ... it depends whether you want to make incremental
backups or just brute force save it all for instance and on your
backup medium. A SCSI DAT for example is fast enough and has enough
capacity to make a full dump of my home machine in << than 10
minutes. It depends too on what programme you are going to use
and so how easy (or not) it is to exclude specific files or to
set up backup schemes.
In any case, note down your partitions and such. See above, I was
in a hurry (off on holidays already) and *BOOM* ... system up and
running again 15 minutes later, phew.

Dude I'm not a guru, I'm on crack! But check it out. This libqt.so.1, it's part

crack remember? anyway, I don't know what you are trying to install but I'll bet
it's based on the qt libs, (KDE runs off of them)
As far as the correct use of tar? I very often do $tar xvfz something.tar.gz
or whatever, you are probally missing an option or the tarball you got is
wacked. man tar for those switch options I just spoke of.
Umounting: Ok make SURE that no xterm or tty's are in the dir of the mounted
dev, example. If you have a cdrom mounted and you do a $cd /mnt/cdrom...then
switch to an xterm under xwindows and try to umount it, (insert buzzer) the dev
is busy?
The rpm thing, find the absolute path to it and then try to execute it! of
course it doesn't just pop-up in some little menu, that would be easy!

mount -t vfat /dev/hdXX /mnt/mydospartition
You did remember to set vfat/msdos and the like to "y" or "m" when you
compiled the kernel, yes?

Hi Bob, Thanks for posting this URL. I've been going mad with SuSE 5.3 and their
PPP. Gave up on YaST, used this document, bosh - no problem. Just got to find
some decent clients now (assuming those supplied aren't the best available).
Thanks again.

Unfortunately, the Redhat 5.2 rhs-printfilters doesn't support the
bjc800 driver. If you have that driver in your ghostscript, just add a
suitable entry in /usr/lib/rhs/rhs-printfilters/printerdb.
Read file Devices.htm for information.
