Very strange. I have a hard time thinking what xfs would be doing to
cause this. But, you might try hardwiring all your Fontpaths into
/etc/X11/XF86Config, kill xfs, restart X and see if it is xfs or maybe
something else that xfs is interacting with. It might be something wonky
with your networking as all of these are using Unix Domain Sockets. Why
would xbanner need xfs (just thinking out loud)?

Subject: need to change /dev/hdc to /dev/hde for LILO
Date: Mon, 06 Mar 2000 16:16:05 GMT

I've got an ABIT BP6 motherboard with four IDE channels.
IDE1 and IDE2 are UDMA33, IDE3 and IDE4 are UDMA66.

The hard drive is plugged into IDE2 and the CD-ROM is plugged into IDE1.
My hard drive device name is /dev/hdc.

However, I want to plug my drive into the UDMA66 IDE3 slot.
I do have a UDMA66 drive and a kernel patch to support the
UDMA66 drive.

When I plug it in there and start the new kernel, I notice it is
looking for a drive at a different device location, /dev/hde.

Is there a way to associate each kernel image with a specific drive
assignment via LILO? So if I type 'linux' at the LILO: prompt, it will
look for it's device at /dev/hdc, but if I type 'newkernel' at the LILO:
prompt, it will know to look for device /dev/hde?

If not, how can I change it so that on my next boot, it will know to
look for /dev/hde for the boot drive/image?

Thanks.

Date: Mon, 06 Mar 2000 16:30:03 GMT

Using RedHat 6.0 & lpr printing to HP JetDirect connected printers I just
cannot switch off the header pages ie.

         User: xxxx
         Host: xxxxxxxxxxx
         Class: xxxxxxxxxxxxx
         Job: xxxxxxxxxxxx

I've used the 'printtool' utility to switch off headers, confirmed that
/etc/printcap has the 'sh' suppress headers option enabled and yet I'm
still getting header pages !

I have other printers which are connected via lpr/lpd which do not print
header pages. What is actually generating these pages ? Is it the JetDirect
card, if so can I switch it off ?

Thanks

I am having a problem with a seagate st380000a ide tape drive. I'm not sure
if the prob lies witht the tape or with my config.

I can get one successful session of copying files to the tape drive after a
reboot. Any further attempts will fail unless the server is rebooted.

I use the command tar -cvt /dev/tape /directory name to backup the files
and I can restore them again using tar -xvf.
If i try the same command immediately after doing a backup it fails.

The var/log/syslog gives the following errors after a successful tar session

I have checked that the jumper on the tape drive is set to master and it is
the only device on the seconday ide controller. The motherboards bios for
that controller is set to none. (I have also tried auto with no change)

I have run the seagate sgtape21 test program and it reports that the drive
is working. o.k

I put RH 6.1 on a Toshiba Satellite 225CDS recently and I was surprised at
how easy it went. I don't have a soundcard/chip but all the rest
are working fine.

I inherited this laptop and it was running Windows95. It had been experiencing
frequent crashes and erratic behavior, which at least one service person
said was probably hardware! Anyhow, I tried first reinstalling
Windows 95 on it, but I had several problems. I had assumed the Linux
install would be not as easy as Windows. After a few days of struggling
with Windows, I downloaded the latest RH6.1 CD, set the bios to boot
from cd and basically I just hit the "do it" button after the
first few install dialogs came up, then I
and went off to lunch. Done. Works great now and it doesn't crash :)

Rick,

The easiest way to do what you want is:
cntrl-alt f1
login
startx -- :1
This will give you your 2nd account (the first is :0)

cntrl-alt f2
login
startx -- :2
This will give you your 3rd account etc.

You can do this up to f6 for a total of 7 xwindows.

cntrl-alt f7 will switch you into your 1st xwindow and cntrl-alt f8-f12
will switch you into your other xwindows.

Hope this helps

The problem is most likely caused by your Linux kernel being
located partly or entirely above the 1024 cylinder boundary
on your drive, where the bios can't get to it. The solution
usually suggested is to have a small 10-15 Meg /boot partition
below this boundary - then the rest of Linux can be anywhere.

Another solution is to set BootGUI=0 in your MSDOS.SYS file
so your PC will boot into DOS and not Win 98 (enter "win" at
the DOS command line to load Win 98). Then use LOADLIN.EXE to
optionally boot into Linux (it requires having a copy of your
Linux kernel in your DOS/Win partition.)

Despite another responder's complaint about this question being
asked over and over, I've been reading this newsgroup fairly
regularly over the past year and it's still not clear to me
how one can reliably put a /boot partition on a large drive like
yours if you want to have a single Win 98 partition which is
larger than 1024 cylinders. There have been numerous complaints
about Win not booting or Win interfering with the /boot partition
if the order of the partitions is /boot, <Win partition>, <Rest of Linux>.
I personally haven't _yet_ had this problem since my Win
(FAT 32) partition is smaller than 1024 cylinders so I can put
the /boot partition above it.

If you'd read the documentation, you'd know that the important part of
that error message comes *before* the "errno=111".

The TNT2 chipset did not become supported until Xfree86 3.3.4 or 3.3.5.
RH 6.0 shipped with an older version of Xfree, so all you need to do is
upgrade your X. Check either of the URLs below for how to do that:

%f is not the right conversion character for a variable of type double.
There are some C compilers that automagically promote floats to doubles,
but gcc and its variants don't seem to do that. Try %lf, and re-read
the section on pritnf() and scanf() in your C programming book.

Actually I've just seen a new release of Lilo that claims to get round the
1024 limit in one of the other Linux groups.....

Subject: Red Hat Installation: How to get past the "Which driver" screen when you have
PCMCIA ethernet
Date: 6 Mar 2000 11:48:10 -0600
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

When installing Red Hat, it gets to a screen where it asks you if you want
to configure "LAN (not dialup)" networking. If you say "Yes", it then asks
you which driver to use. Well, the problem is that you may have a card not
listed on their list or, in particular, you might have PCMCIA ethernet,
which is not listed at all. But I've found no way to get past the screen,
to say - "Yes, I want to install the networking, but, alas, my card is not
on your list".

Is there any way to do this? If not, what is the workaround? How to setup
the networking later on, after the install?

you'll need to scour the kernel archives for the patch to fix this - it
should be in 2.2.14 or 2.2.15 and later 2.3's. By default linux can't cope
with 40GB disks..

because you declare f as a double, but read it as a single.

use %lf for doubles
