Unfortunately I tried that too. No difference :(
I think Leon got it right though. It goes to show, working on NT makes
you stupid ;)

According to the sound files, Linux is pronounced as 'lee-nucks' by
Linus.
I've worked with GNU software for quite some time (off and on), and have
always pronounced it 'guh-noo' - first syllable clipped, "g'noo" might
be closer. Sorta like saying "knight" but pronouncing the K Monty
Python style ("silly English k-nights").

The first thing that I would recommend is formatting the drive and then run
Fdisk from the DOS 6.22 install program,(should run automatically after
format). After going through these two steps you should be able to install
DOS 6.22 if not I recommend that you install DOS 6.2 then upgrade to DOS
6.22. Also which version of Win95 and /or Win98 if you are trying to install
Win95 Vresion A then you will not have any luck because It will not be able
to read the HDD, and if the version of Win98(Which I don't recommend Win98
in the first place) is the first version then you are out of luck. If none
of these suggestions work then what I recommend is that you wipe all none
valueable programs off of the hard drive and load Windows from Linux's GUI
and see what happens(never have tried this last thaught but it is worth the
try

I have an ATI Mach64 (3D charger) 4mb PCI, and this gives a great result
up to 1280x1024/16bit color/75hz. The speed is ok but not too great for
games, though.

Tektronix WinDD-NIS integrates NT and Unix (NIS and NIS+) domain
account management. You can create NIS accounts on the Unix side, and
when a user logs into NT with the same passowrd and a special domain
name, the NT account is created automatically. Password sync is also
achieved.
They sell a worksation version, but I think it is best just to run it on
the PDC.
Another option is to use Samba's NT domain participation.

This doesn't want to operate for some reason, I installed the system and it
keeps failing eth0. I read that modprobe -t in the net directory would try
and load the correct one but I couldn't that to operate correctly kept
bombing out. Tried configuring it as a 2000 compatible which I read
somewhere but still no go. Any ideas greatly appreciated! In windoze 98 it
says that it is IRQ 9 and memory starts at E300-E01F. I tried adding those
to the modprobe command for the realtech 8129 and also to the nec2000 but to
no avail. Is there any way to autoconfigure or something? Thanks in Advance!

Why exactly? My NT server provides a central location to store the policy
file. Can Samba not do this? If not, does Samba not provide a way to
distribute files - e.g. login scripts?

Hi all,
I am now running Samba2.0.3 in my Linux SuSE 2.2.5. Several WindowsNT
are connected to the samba server. But when i retrive the files from the
linux, the files cannot be displayed correctly. I know that it is the
problem related to the different format of CR LF in Linux and NT.
How can i solve the poblem? Where can i find more information??

I don't think I have ever ended up without dump/restore so this
must have been an installation choice.

That's somewhat unfair unless you can point to something that installs
on more kinds of hardware with fewer problems and I don't think
you can. I don't trust anyone's version upgrades, though.

I haven't seen a big difference between the man page sets, but on
Linux you can find the things that the man pages omit in other places.

Subject: HELP: 'Console drivers' option unavail. when "make xconfig"
Date: Thu, 24 Jun 1999 07:46:54 GMT
When I run 'make xconfig' in /usr/src/linux (for the 2.2.8 version),
my "Console drivers" button is not highlighted (and "QoS and/or
fair queueing", "IrDA subsystem support", "Infrared-port device
drivers" and "Watchdog Cards" aren't as well, besides): so I
can't choose anything here.
How come ?
What makes an option of the /usr/src/linux/scripts/kconfig.tk file
available or not ? (all this cause I can't seem to be able to boot my
kernel when I've recompiled it, it fails all the time, and I was told
it might come from the fact I haven't configured any frame buffer...)
Thanks for any help !

Subject: problem with the new kde 1.1.1 (final) rpms and ssh
Date: Thu, 24 Jun 1999 02:09:16 -0500
Hi!
I am running redhat 6.0 on an intel pentium system. I installed
ssh-1.2.27-5us, ssh-extras-1.2.27-5us, ssh-server-1.2.27-5us,
ssh-clients-1.2.27-5us packages (rpms from rpmfind.net)
and the system was working very well. It runs ssh daemon also.
After redhat announced new kde packages with security fixes, I upgraded
the kde rpms from 1.1.1pre2 to 1.1.1 final. But strangely,
ssh is having some problems. My login shell is tcsh.
When I do ssh to the same or another system (same configuration, rh6, kde 1.1.1final
etc), it lets me log in but after executing the
.cshrc file, it also outputs the following errors (between the #### lines).
############################################
kdepath=/usr/bin:command not found
kdepath: variable not defined
############################################
And then, the shell I get is partially frozen. It doesn't behave like
a normal tcsh (up/down arrows don't work. tab doesn't work etc). I can
type at the prompt.
I don't understand whether it's the problem with kde rpms or ssh.
I grepped all ssh config files but didn't find kdepath anywhere.
I have no clue from where it's getting that "kdepath=/usr/bin" line
AFTER executing my .cshrc
I have reverted back to the old kde packages and ssh/scp work
fine as before.
I appreciate if anyone provides an explanation/solution!
thanks!

There are literally thousands of official debs available. In practice I've
found that probably 99% of the stuff I use is available as a deb. About the
only things I've found that often arn't available as a deb are alpha/beta
level software in which case I prefer to compile anyway.

linuxconf was, AFAIK, created by the RH folks. There are some Debian folks
porting it but it's not in the stable distro. yet.

One should of course be careful installing binary packages found somewhere
on the net.
>I was wondering if Debian has any means by which to install "rpm" packages,
Debian comes with the "alien" package converter
(http://www.kitenet.net/programs/alien/) which can convert RPM to .deb.

Linuxconf packages are not part of the current Debian release, but are
available as part of "unstable"
(http://www.debian.org/Packages/unstable/admin/linuxconf.html), and can thus
be expected to be available in the next Debian release.
>or does Debian come with any similar graphical system-management utility?
Not really. Debian has a powerful mechanism for configuring packages at
installation time which makes such a utility less needed.
