It is remarkably difficult to write a virus on a Unix workalike such as
Linux. We're pretty safe, I think. Not sure about Word-compatible word
processors though...

Hi,
I wont to get a PCCOM Intelligent 8 Port Card manufacted by
Decision startet.

The card is without documents (lost in .....)
It is from 1992 or 1993 and worked fine in a SCO Server until
several weeks ago.

There is a patch on
     Decision PCCOM8 (8 ports)
     contact: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
     driver location: ftp://ftp.signum.se/pub/pccom8

but reading the docu of the patch I found that the patch
is to do against kernel 2.0.29
I am using now 2.2.0

Is it possible to do the patch against kern 2.2.0 ?

Is anyone out there who is running this card ?
Or is able to help the card getting started ?

N.B. I m running SuSE 6.0 Linux on 486 AMD System

Greetings from Germany
Julius

i have no idea. it works fine for me. is it a permissions thing?
did you chmod the script to be executable by you?

No, but like I said, I often think of things and then never get around
to implementing them. Also it sometimes happens that I fix a bug or
add some feature bloat to something and when I forward it upstream I
get ignored by the (probably very busy) maintainer. So then I am
temporarily discouraged from doing more of the same....

> Ah...but what if <dum dum duuum> you use a gpm repeater as your

Well, actually, I listed three problems in my message, and using the
gpm repeater should take care of #1. I can handle the other two as
well, having thought a bit more. They were:

  - getting xauth permission, which changes whenever xdm resets things
  - surviving X session changes

The two are really related, and point out a bug in the original idea.
The current X user would not necessarily *want* gpm to be able to
read/write cut buffers without explicit permission, i.e. running the
helper app or whatever. So this would have to happen on a per-login
basis anyway.

OK, here's how I would code all this if I had the time and/or enough of
the inclination to make the time. (:

gpm creates a socket somewhere (/tmp is good except complicated to
avoid security races), `gpmctl'. It would implement an ioctl-like
interface, where you would open the socket, write an enumerated char
command to it followed by some struct, and (if appropriate) read back a
struct from same socket. One command would be GPM_GETSEL, which would
return a `struct { int len; char str[] }' for the current selection.
Another would be GPM_SETSEL, where you pass in the same thing. A third
would be GPM_NOTIFY or _SELECT or something, and you send in an event
mask for async notify. One of the async notify events would be change
of selection. (Others would be mouse events, I imagine.)

A helper app would run in your .xsession, open an X connection, open
the gpm socket, use GPM_GETSEL to grab the current selection and
immediately post it to the X server. It would also set GPM_NOTIFY to
catch selection updates, and hook the X server to provide the same. (I
don't remember my Xlib very well, so I don't know how this is done.
Would you have to poll it or is there an async mode?) Then it would
just pass selections back and forth as they come in, until you log out.

I'm still not sure how access control should work, since by this scheme
gpm selections would be available to everyone on the system. Bad
stuff. Maybe the helper app would have to be setgid and then try and
make appropriate checks for reasonable use; maybe successfully opening
a local X display would be enough of a check.

In my srm.conf file, i have this line:
UserDir public_html

And in the description above it says that that directive will a make it so
that users can have their web pages under http://domain/~user
It doesn't work for me. First of all, no public_html folder has been created
under the users, is that something that i have to do manually? Even for new
users? I don't quite understand that, can you let me know? Thanks,

Hello,
I've installed redhat 5.2 and am trying to set up a screensaver to work
with all the logins as well as the login console window. I've
not had too much luck in sorting through all the files, trying to find
the one that controls the login console and default user accounts.
I downloaded xscreensaver from linuxburg and wanted to use it as the
default screensaver. It works well from a command
line, but I want it loaded automatically.

Could someone please let me know which files I should edit? I am
running redhat 5.2 and using XFree86 with the default
AnotherLevel.
Thank you.

Well, the Australian mirror up to now still does not contain any files in
/pub/linux/kernel/people/alan/2.2 except patch-2.2.3ac2-SMPFIX.diff.

All other ac pathes are simply not there ... so that I have to switch to the
US mirror site.

It has been like this for several days.

On my Debian GNU/Linux 2.1 system, Xemacs 20 (http://www.xemacs.org)
defaults to using X when $DISPLAY is defined, and textmode when it isn't.

I'm not an emacs user myself, so I have no idea whether FSF emacs can be
made to behave the same way.
