I worked with a guy about a year ago that had an early beta of NT5WS.
It was about as fast as NT4WS on the same hardware (P5-200 with 96megs
of ram). I only saw it run once, but at that time, it seemed complete
and stable. There were no glaring problems with it (at least during my
5 minutes or so with it)

Is this server-side or client-side code? Server-side stuff is
probably best as an X extension, and client-side (as used by Motif
DnD) is best as a library. Better yet would be a combination of the
two that uses server-side colour cursors if the extension is
available, and client-side otherwise.

This really isn't that bad an option. If you set up a DOS boot menu
and loadlin, it works well. It's what I use to initialize my joystick
port.

You could use dosemu and grant it privelages to whatever IO ports
your driver uses, but that could be dangerous if they're, say, the
PCI bus. If it's an ISA plugNplay board, have you tried the isapnp
tools?

That's true, but in the UNIX world the hardware usually changes too fast to
have to worry about maintaining backward binary compatibility. And if the
hardware hasn't changed, the OS has.
After all, I've gone through three generations of hardware since I started
working with UNIX.
The solution? Don't throw away the source code.

Possibly it could be slower because of the NIC driver, I believe that the
3c905 uses the 3c5x9 driver and emulates a 3c5x9, I think the reason for this
is becuase 3com has not released info needed to write a driver for the 3c90x.
Correct me if Im worng though, if this is the case, it could be slowing your
net performance, and causing timeouts on DNS resolutions. Please flame me if
this is ludicrous information.

Perhaps the original author's confusion is due to the presence of dynamic
linking. Many programs under Unix are not completely linked into a complete
executable image when the static linker (ld) has finished with them.
At runtime, the dynamic linker (ld.so or related) is called and completes
the linking process.

I have found that learning programming depends to a huge degree
on what you are trying to accomplish. I frequently write programs
for various numerical applications, basically numbers in <-> numbers
out. I used to do this all in FORTRAN. When I switched over to
linux I used f2c for a while and then finally bit the bullet
and now do everything in C. It took a surprisingly small amount of
time to make the switchover. But I don't really *know* C in the
sense that most people mean when they say they know it. I'd
be totally lost trying to write a device driver or something.

There is no need to run mknod. The raw devices are already in place in
/dev
That said, unless you know *exactly* what you are doing, it is best not to
play around with your raw hard disk partitions. Making an error with a
raw hard disk partition will destroy any data you have on the partition in
question.

I've only used it with anonymouse FTP; it goes in the home directory

/welcome.msg is the path seen by the change-root (chroot) environment

Hi guys-
Thanks for the additional tips. Michael, I will look into this idea
you suggested. Basically, I tried to follow the first tip but was
stymied when it came to the sendmail sources. I use RH and so I have
the "pristine" sources and a lot of patches. It is unclear which ones
to apply, in what order, and so on. So I had basically decided to go
ahead and hack inc to look for a file called ~/.nmh_inc_subst that
would define the correct user mail spool something like this:
#fake name real name
drew nancy
Then I could keep using the nmh "fakeout" thing and have my normal
mail spool.
But if I can do this in sendmail.cf without having to patch and
recompile I will be very happy.
No offense, but I love exmh and I really don't care for NS mail. ;)

In truth, I am not an expect TCL programmer. My general experience with
TCL is that it has problems with making too many changes between versions,
frequently breaking legacy scripts.
I would suggest the following:
* Find out what version of TCL you have on your Sun box
* Find out what version you have of TCL on your Linux box
* Go to the TCL or Expect FAQ to see if this problem is noted there
* Should you still have problems, ask the people in comp.lang.tcl for
help, since it is more likely you will find someone versed in the
changes done in TCL and Expect there

First, read the kernel README where it says "If your kernel is too large...".
You might also need to get a newer version (like 0.20) of lilo to handle
big images.

takes some doing.

Hmmm, with Linux most (if not all) changes can be done via a text
interface. Yes, this does take learning how to configure how to do
everything with text-based applications, but Linux can do this.
There are many Linux servers that never need to use X to be remotely
administered.
If you told us the types of Linux systems these were, and what you needed
to remotely administer, we could give you some pointers to the basic
commands.

This is a terminal problem. Make sure minicom is set to vt100 emulation,
then type in the following command at the remote end:
export TERM=vt100
>Can anyone give me pointers on a simple dialin\dialout setup...
There is a package called term they may be more easy to set up. Another
option is slirp.
Oh, did I mention that X is dog slow over any kind of dialing connection?

Hi,
I'm using the sound driver code that came with RH5.1, compiling it for

when I read from either /dev/dsp or /dev/audio, I get nothing but blank
space when using "cat /dev/dsp > aufile". I wrote some code to set all
of the sampling parameters myself, with all the ioctl calls returning
success, and the resulting data is still completely blank (all unsigned
bytes are 0x80). Has anyone else had this problem before? My mixer
settings show that the microphone input is set for recording (though
I've tried using line-in, with the same results). The microphone works.

This is reasonably easy:
* Go to RedHat's hardware compatibility list. Is you machine listed?
If so, good news. If not, well, you may be able to get it to work,
but *I* certaintly would not know how to do it. Here is a useful
URL:
http://www.redhat.com/support/docs/rhl/sparc/rh52-hardware-sparc.html
* If you are listed (see above) purches RedHat 5.2 for Sparc
* Install it, as described in RedHat's excellent documentation:
http://www.redhat.com/support/docs/rhl/
* Have fun with Linux!
The nice thing about Linux/Sparc and Linux/Alpha is that they allow you to
streamline all of your servers on one os, making it so you don't have to
put up with things like "'echo -n' does not work on Solaris".
