I am not aware of a way to do exactly what you want. Using the fg, bg,
jobs, %n commands inside a bash session will work, but the job is stopped
when put in the background and the jobs terminate when you log out of that
bash session.
Running the process in the background using & starts the process which
continues to run even after you log out. If the process is a server then
there might be a way for you to connect to it to do what you want, you will
have to look at the documentation.
I do know of a way that might work for you though. You can use the VNC
program, or perhaps something similar. The way it works is this, you start
a vncserver process on your server. The server does not need to be running
X. Then from another machine you run the vncviewer program which connects
you to your vncserver. Inside your vncviewer shell/window you start your
process in the foreground. You can use interact with the process, use your
mouse, whatever. Then you can log out of the vncviewer, and the process
continues to run remotely on the vncserver. You can go to another machine,
log in, check on the running process, make adjustments, log out, etc. The
address is www.uk.research.att.com/vnc

If you want to have a process get started when your computer is booted you
can add a line at the end of your /etc/rc.d/rc.local script. This script
gets run after the other system init stuff. Make sure that the local
service for your default runlevel gets started when you boot.
Hope this helps,
Chip

After finally downloading ns6 sucessfully I now find it won't install.
The graphical
installation prog reports sucess, but the text outputted to the console
reads:

If you mean CD-DA playback , I guess your problem is in the audio
cable linking the CD-ROM and the SB16.
AFAIK the SB16 has no way to turn stereo CDin into mono out

Hi all,

How can I setup a News without a feeder server? Since when I check the
howto, it always said we need a feeder but my ISP don't have a news
server itself.

Just to mention, this doesn't meet your requirements I think, but
for many of us with just a dial-up connection who are now running
a 2.4.0 kernel, the combo of iptables and the script at:

http://netfilter.kernelnotes.org/unreliable-guides/packet-filtering-HOWTO-5.html

is very easy to set up, just call the script from
/etc/rc.d/rc.local and shazam!

This looks like a good trick; I did something like this myself,
but wound up thereby hanging my system. Some time spent with
Tom's root-boot disk saved the day however. I wish my notes were
a little more coherent so I could say what actually _did_ work
with the root-boot.

Try out leafnode. It is very easy to set up, and it will only cache
groups that you are actually reading.

Yes, but I would like to be sure that my printer is recieving data, so I
wanted to make the simplest test.

I tried apsfilter (I currently using Slackware) but the result is the

I ran across one of these (many) messages in comp.sys.apple2.programmer, and
I've seen the subject in nearly every newsgroup I follow. You're correct in
that TotalNet doesn't appear to give a sh*t about spammers, and Hotmail said
that the email address given by the poster was fake. If you decode the
message and run it through Lynx, a link to a website called mobydicks.com
appears; it appears to be a literary website of some kind. I fired off a
spam alert to [EMAIL PROTECTED]; maybe they can do something (like quit
hosting the page with the make-money-fast scan).

you can setup a news server yourself, but be warned. A decent news server
is going to eat up no less then a full T1 and almost 400gig of space. I
would suggest using www.supernews.com they have very nice, full feeds and
they are cheap.

I don't know about vi (I only use it when there's no other editor, as it's
rather cumbersome to use), but it's fairly easy in joe. Press ` and then
whatever character you want to add. If it's an ASCII character (0-127), you can
enter it at the keyboard (`-Esc to add Esc, `-Return to add ^M, `-H to add
^H, etc.). If it's a high-bit character (128-255), you can enter it as a
decimal, octal, or hexadecimal code (`-x80 to enter (euro symbol), or
`-xfc to enter , as in "fukengrven" :-) ).

There are several PPPoE clients for Linux. The most popular seems to be
Roaring Penguin. I've got links to several of these tools at
