Well not to cry wolf but I found out my problem by reading in
comp.os.linux.misc... Someone had similar problem. Two users replied that
the script was original written from a dos/win platform. this was actually
the case as I downloaded the software on my win pc so I could write it to a
cdrom..... dos2unix fixed that problem.... installed the package from a link
at http://filewatcher.org nuff said.
New problem and one that I thought I was through with.... When starting
ups monitoring a console message appears : cannot open port "/dev/ttys1" for
UPS access - Input/output error. Setserial reports same error when I try to
autoconfigure or set manually..... I had this problem initialy when setting
up the modem. After using device cua0 with a link to /dev/modem (I know
every howto says not to use cua* or /dev/modem) I got the modem to work
fine. But when I #setserial /dev/ttys2 (modem location) I get the same
response....
I am assuming that the links are wrong.?.? Important note serial port
(ttys1) is on motherboard. Does this matter ? I assume it must be a
configuration problem since the modem works fine....
The modem is a newcom 56ifx pnp or jumpered setup(even has references to
linux setup in manual) . And as I said the serial port is on the motherboard
and is configured automatically or manually from the bios.
ttys1=com2
ttys2=com3=cua0=modem

Actually, I do not mind the single "NOSPAM" included in an otherwise

I agree with this sentiment in general. I was primarily referring to
the " asked-a- thousand-times-before-question."
I quote from " A Primer on How to Work with the Usenet Community "
by Chuq Von Rospach, which, I believe, is posted by many ISP's on
their websites :
" One of the biggest problems we have on the network is that when someone
asks a question, many people send out identical answers...Mail your answer

I'm not sure about your card, I have a SiS 6236 AGP, and the same
thing happened. I had to install the latest XFree86.3.3.3 SVGA server
to get it to recognize the card.
The reason you are getting lousy screen size, is your card is
only being detected as a vga16 card. The latest XFree86
recognizes alot more cards. You may need a special server
other than the SVGA.

I solved the problem by editing boot.ini file. It was all messed-up, and
"repairing" NT installation only contributed to it. Somehow partition number
for WINNT location changed from (1) to (2), and that was the whole problem.

Another great feature of Lilo is that you can load it onto a floppy, and
then have the system boot into one OS or the other based on whether
there's a "LILO" floppy in the drive. This makes it real easy for less
advanced users (read "your family") to switch between Linux and Windows.
My 6 year old son plays some games in Win95 and some in Linux, and has
no problems booting between them.

Thanks Ed,
I use the Linux version of Netscape 4.5. What I wasn't clear enough
saying was that I want to use both the Win95 version and the Linux
version pointed at the same newsgroup file. In slrn I could point the
Linux version of slrn and the Win95 version of slrn to the same jnews.rc
file (on the Win partition) and the two copies of slrn stayed
syncronized with regard to what articles I had read. Since (even with
its bugs) Netscape is my favorite all purpose internet tool I would like
to do the same with it.
Thanks again

Huh? How does mounting or umounting screw anything up?

Easy. Linux uses buffered I/O. When it writes to a device, the data doesn't
necessarily end up on the disk, but it might stay in memory. The unmounting
ceremony is necessary to make sure that the disk file system is in a
consistent state.
DOS doesn't use buffers. It writes directly through to the disk. This is a
primitive behaviour and causes a major performance hit, but hey, no mounting.

Probably Redhat 5.2 (Linux 2.0.35) is probably the closest fit. However,
since both Linux and FreeBSD are dirt cheap, why not invest in both and
make your own choice.
Both Linux and FreeBSD are excellent choices. They are both stable and
able to handle a great deal of stress. Which one is more popular?
Probably Linux since it's it getting the lion's share of the media
attention. The media boneheads really don't have a clue but at least they
can make themselves useful by letting a wider audience know about free
software solutions.

That will only get run when a user logs in (and only then, if the

I tried rebuilding my kernel and really mucked it up -- before getting the

kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 3:01
What is VFS and 3:01? Can someone guess what I did wrong to receive this
message?
I couldn't figure out how to get back to the original kernel, so I simply
reloaded the OS, and all is well right now. Since I didn't format the
non-system partitions, no important data was lost, (unlike win95 and it's
lame-ass registry).

There have been people who say "don't go GPL, go LGPL instead" but I'm
thinking that GPL might be the best way (no matter how much I may
disagree with RMS), IF there is something I can do about the
patch-contribution issue. That's where I come to a dead stop and
start scratching my head... how to ask people to give me their code to
sell? That just doesn't seem right. Refuse all contributions? Most
I've received in the past were not of general use, were fixes that
fixed a specific problem while breaking several other things, etc. ;
but this does not mean there would never be a patch that wouldn't be
as good or better than what I would code myself. This is my sticking
point at the moment, and I don't yet know how to deal with it. I
guess saying upfront that if you send me any patches you are giving me
all rights to them would be fair enough, but I'm not sure whether I'd
consider that offensive or not if I was on the contributing end of
things. -steve

It'd be great if my neighbors & I could leave our houses unlocked when we

Similarly, it'd be great if I could post to the newsgroups with my real
