        Well, that depends.
If the source is available, there usually isn't much of a problem.
Some adjustments probably need to be made, but by and larger the

Hi, I just got a DVD kit, Creative Labs Encore (whatever). Anyway, is
there any way to play DVD Movies in linux yet? From what I've heard the
drive will work in linux. I haven't messed with it yet...

I hope you made a typo when typing this in... If the tutorial has this as
is, it is in error.

g++ 2.8.1 should be "okay" for most stuff--I think it merges egcs code. I'm
using egcs myself, though, but at school, we have gcc 2.8.1 and it seems to
be fine.

I bought the Fraunhoffer encoder for Linux. Naturally, it does a fine job.

Generally on Linux systems, "cc" is the same as "gcc".

> test.c:4: warning: return type of `main' is not `int'

According to the ANSI (ISO) C rules, the return type of "main"
MUST be "int" (either explicitly or implicitly). Therefore
gcc complains if you have "main" that returns some other type.

I do not think that it is fatal, though; you must have some other
errors.

man tar

some examples:

tar xf filename.tar # untars the tarball, silently
tar tvf filename.tar # does not untar it, only shows what files
there are in it and where they land.
tar xzf filename.tar.gz # same as the first, but works with tar.gz.
archives, ie gunzips, ant untars at the same
                           time.
tar tvzf filename.tar.gz # I guess you can figure this out yourself.

(and, btw, .tgz is the same as .tar.gz)

I was having problems with the 128-bit 4.5 communicator. Others reported
the same problems (bus error and near-instantaneous crash of netscape when
loading certain pages - notably www.freshmeat.net). I was directed to the
netscape ftp site to pick up the version of 4.5 (non-128-bit :() in the
unix/unsupported/ directory area. I installed it and so far it is rock
solid. No crashes, reasonably quick.

I installed / compiled kernal 2.2.1 over the weekend, and have noticed a
performance gain in orders of magnitude over the 2.0.36 I was running.
Is this normal ;-)

Seriously, X is flying, Compile seems to be quicker, although I have no
benchmarks, and generally I feel I get better response. My major thing
is Netscape. I had it loading in about 10 seconds b4 the upgrade, and it
now loads in a couple seconds. I have a mostly SCSI PII400 w/ 192M.

I was not expecting such a performance change, and although pleasantly
surprised, I would like to know if this is expected, and why? Is there
some hardware which is better used?

From: Patrick O'Neil <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: guile-gtk and gtk+-1.1.13
Date: Tue, 2 Feb 1999 09:42:50 -0700

Has anyone managed to get guile-gtk-0.14 to compile with gtk+-1.1.13?
I also have the gtk+10-1.0.6 and glib10-1.0.6 rpms installed.

First off, with ANY gtk-dependent app I have tried to compile I get a
failure of ./configure when it tries to run a gtk+ test app. It tells me
that gtk-config is in error or I may have moved the libs since
installation. I have done nothing to them. They are rpm-installed and
they have been, and will remain, where they are now and supposed to be
(primarily /usr/lib). I have examined gtk-config but can see nothing
wrong on the surface, but then, I barely know what I am looking for.

Can anyone help me out on this?

Another problem I get is involving guile. I have guile-1.3 installed
(rpm). If I disable the gtk-test app via a configure switch, I get past
that part (with a bunch of errors that leads me to think that guile-gtk
0.14 doesn't like gtk+-1.1.13) but then configure craps out telling me
that it cannot find guile on my system. I don't know if it is looking for
guile libs or the guile binary. In any case, they are also where they are
supposed to be, the location is in ld.so.conf and I have even added it to
the PATH in profile. Nothing has worked.

Can anyone help me out with this?

The actual "filters" are drivers that come with ghostscript. The driver
you need is bjc800. Do

gs -h | grep bjc800

to see if your ghostscript has this driver.

If not, you'll have roll your own:

http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/index.html

If so, then the only problem is that

/usr/lib/rhs/rhs-printfilters/printerdb

doesn't have an entry for it. Just edit that file and add
a suitable entry, following the pattern of similar printer/driver
combinations; read the Canon BJ section of Devices.htm (or devices.txt).
Then configure using printtool.
