Also cd into the directory of the program you are trying to build.

Hi out there,
my system has been working fine for about six months. Yesterday I
changed the crontab (not for the first time) and now cron doesn't work
properly anymore.
Suddenly it takes the username of an entry as a command and tries to
execute it. Root gets tons of error mails such as
/bin/sh: root: command not found
Does anyone know what's happened ?
TIA

A package for controlling emacs in perl was announced a good two or three
years ago (I forget when). It was still in the CPAN the last time I checked
(also quite some time ago).

In my opinion a picture of a submarine is not a proper

A column in Linux Journal a couple months back featured
some work by a fellow who managed to get 9 distributions
on one computer, using a very cleverly set up LILO and
extended partitions, etc.
Two can definitely be done.

I believe DPMS stands for Display Power Management System.
It's the nifty feature that lets the computer actually shut
off the monitor (or move it to a standby mode).
No DPMS support probably just means 1) your monitor on the nt
box doesn't support DPMS or 2) the Exceed X server doesn't
support the protocol. Either way, I wouldn't worry about it.

Subject: isofs and timezone problem
Date: Fri, 17 Mar 2000 10:51:01 +0000
Hello -
Problem is vey simple: my CD-R timestamps are off by n hours -
in my case, they all seem to be off by 12 hours. Furthermore,
the same disk in other OSs (win, etc) show correct time.
This has been reported before - and the classic response is
that linux/unix stores dates in UTC, and programs like
ls let libc do the conversion for them based on TZ or
/etc/localtime. This explains why linux timestamps can
be different from dos/win ones, because those systems
ignore timezone info.
However, I believe something else is wrong. Even with
TZ=UTC, a mounted iso image shows wrong times. ISO9660 has
a spot for a timezone, and after an hour or so with the
spec and a hex editor I can see that images created by
mkisofs have the correct timezone entered.
The isofs 2.0.36 kernel module, however, seems to be
either ignoring the tz info on the disk, or using
it twice, or treating the time as GMT, then applying
the iso9660 tz, then treating that result as UTC,
and re-applying the local tz. Either way its messed up.
An older post said the mkisofs source noted that isofs
is behaving out of spec.
Any comments, suggestions, workarounds?
I need the correct times so synch/backups work.
thanks,
usman

I fooled around with it (1.3.5) a little. It crashed on me several
times, and I lost my data. I didn't lose much data because I was just
testing it. For the not-so-technically inclined (like me), it's
probably wise to wait a little while for the bugs to get ironed out.

Subject: Voice Data from microphone in linux
Date: Fri, 17 Mar 2000 21:03:24 +0900
Hello~
I implement a simple program which get voice from microphone and
put it out to PC-speaker by using open, read, write command with /dev/audio
(or /dev/dsp). source code is at the bottom of this mail.
But I came to have some questions.
one is the sound quality, another is delay of soundout.
1. The sound quality is very low having noise which is similar to radio's.
According to the man page of audio,
the mu-law encoding corresponds to CCITT G.711 is the standard for
voice data used by telephone companies in the United States, Canada.
How can I get the good quality( mu-law encoding level ) of sound from
microphone. Is there tip to manipulate /dev/audio ?
and......
what is the difference between /dev/audio and /dev/dsp.
2. There is time-gap. After saying something to microphone,
2~3 second later, I can hear the contents of what I'm saying from
speaker.
How can I reduce the time gap for real time communication ?
I wanna expand the range of communication to LAN.
Thank you very much for reading.
Any comments are warmly welcomed.

to each his own. i rather like lisp but dislike perl. in fact, i
sometimes write emacs-lisp programs where other would have used perl.
my only complaint is that emacs-lisp is such an old and slow lisp.
i'd rather be using common-lisp.
