No distribution would be tuned to that kind of power system out of
the box. Perhaps better documentation is needed but they made
no real effort to use the documentation that was available or
the support that was available. And nothing can excuse the
obviously deliberate efforts to cripple the applications by
re-compiling them with ridiculous optimization options.

I like the fact that you don't have to do any repartitioning of
harddrives. I hate the 15-20 minute bootup time on my 586 laptop.

I may be out of date here (I'm using 5.03) but when you get
ghostscript you may have to compile in support for your particular printer.
Run the command gv -h and see what the available devices are. (I think
your epson is stcolor).

Steve,

Samba is not your problem with Proxy server! I was in a similar situation
not long ago. Create a user account on the PDC that matches the username
and password on the linux machine - so if you log onto the linuxbox and
steve with password steve create the same thing on the PDC and make sure
that this user has Web proxy access (If you have SP3 or higher installed and
everyone in your office is allowed on the internet use "All Authenticated
Users" for web and windsock access control. Go to the MMC on the NT box and
make sure that the default web server's IP address is set to "all
unassigned". Then go to the SOCKS proxy and open ports EQ to 25 (smtp),
119(news), 110(POP), 23(telnet), 21(ftp) and what ever else you need.
Then go to the linux box, login as whoever you are to the NT box and set
your preferences to point to the internal NIC of the proxy server (I use the
IP address but you can use the name if you have set it in the hosts file
(see the linuxconf "dialog box") and port 80 for everything except SOCKS
which will stay at 1080. You should now have web surfing ability - NT gets
passed the user name and password from the linux machine which it checks
against it's rock solid security model :) and gives you access.
Obviously I am assuming that you have set the PDC as your default gateway /
router and that you can successfully ping the internal card of the proxy
server - if you can ping the external card TURN OFF IP ROUTING!!!

Hope this helps,
Glenn Gerrard

Not sure if I've missed some posts here but here goes...

Tried to use the Epson GT7000 SCSI2 scanner with sane-0.73 without
success
some months ago.

More recently successfully installed and used sane-1.00. The frontend
s/w works great: scanimage, xscanimage and plug-in for gimp.

Note that the epson backend will only work with device /dev/scanner so
you may have to create a symbollic link to the appropriate /dev/sg?
generic
device.

The only thing left on my wish list is an increase in the scan speed
(roughly
1/2 the speed obtained using twain driver under 'doze). There are some
comments about speed in the source code, basicly suggesting that the
author
did not get around to sorting it all out.

Apart from that, you shouldn't have any problems.

Good luck,

Russ

Hi,

Netscape Communicator is an excellent choice in my opinion. It supports
pop3. I use my netscape for email, usenet and "surfing". I recommend you to
use version 4.5 or higher.

I've also got an atapi zip.

My machine (SuSE 6.0) has the manpage, but all the *real* info is in the info

According to the StarOffice web page, StarOffice can import Framemake

framemaker file type in the open dialog list.

Thanks for any help,

SuSE mostly deals with /etc/rc.config, and then YaST uses scripts to change
the various files which live in their usual habitats. 'frinstance if you've
designated nameservers in YaST, YaST sets these in /etc/rc.config, then uses
scripts to make the neccessary changes in (in this example) /etc/host.resolve.

Dunno about a FAQ, though...

SuSE uses LILO. In fact using YAST to set it up is so easy it's laughable.
6.0 also comes with an alternate bootmanager, just for those who want menus &
stuff. I think. I haven't actually used it, seeing as how LILO fufils all my
requirements with a minimum of fuss and aggravation, which is all I really want.
