RH6.1 kernel include APM, but I don't know about 6.0. If you check the
file /proc/apm, you can see if it supports APM. You may need to run
apmd, too.

Check /etc/sysconfig/clock for UTC (=GMT) or not.

Cheers.

A module that wasn't built in your kernel. This warning appeared
when you started an application? Which? If it runs, no problem.
You can of course put alias net-pf-10 off in your /etc/conf.modules
to avoid the message.

I didn't actually use this Andreas, as I had not checked my email until
today, it sorted itself out somehow.
However, I just had the same problem for LinuxPPC a few minutes ago. So I
did what you said:
./configure ppc-linux
and it worked, but during the tests performed it said gcc couldn't compile
exe's!!! Ah well, I'll figure it out...

I've been doing some experimentation in recording audio to my computer from
a minidisc player (all analog--line out to line in). I'm using wavrec to
record to wav files. I'm getting a little frustrated in monitoring and
setting appropriate levels, though. I haven't been able to find a piece of
software that gives an on-screen vu meter and allows adjustment of levels.
Just using xmixer and setting levels by ear isn't a very good solution.

Is there some piece of software out there that does this that I haven't
found yet?

Well, I would recommend the distribution your best friend uses. A helping
hand is far more important than the easiness. It is senseless to use
for instance RedHat if your friend is an avid Debian user. He won't be
able to help you with rpm for example.

sync.

Or wait a few minutes until the kernel writes buffers to the disk.

Reboot the machine. At this time the kernel will flush buffers.

nope, but you could write a very simple java client to log into the pop server,
then use whatever separate SMTP client you want afterwards.

To pop-authenticate, you'd only need a few lines to:

create a socket to the pop server
use an input stream to read the greeting
use an output stream to send two lines: USER and PASS

you'd only need to install the earliest jvm to handle this task on any machines
that don't need a jvm for any other reason; or you could look into using a
browser and the plugin to get out of the sandbox...

or even use any old telnet client with a script to log in with

Subject: Sinmple(?) lpr problem in RH 6.0, please help
Date: Thu, 23 Mar 2000 07:53:11 GMT

I have problems setting up lpr to work with RH 6.0.

I can print if I use the command:

 cat test.ps | /usr/local/bin/ps.color.eco.if > /dev/lp0

But not with:

 lpr -Pcoloreco test.ps

I can see it flash by in lpq, and also when using lpc status coloreco
it looks like it is working. I have restarted lpd.

BUT I have noticed that 'lpc status all' gives information of the
printer coloreco, but also a number of ':'.

The printcap looks like this:

coloreco:\
 :lp=/dev/lp0:\
 :sd=/var/spool/lpd/lp_color_eco:\
 :lf=/var/spool/lpd/lp_color_eco/log:\
 :af=/var/spool/lpd/lp_color_eco/acct:\
 :if=/usr/local/bin/ps.color.eco.if:\
 :la:mx#0:\
 :sh:sf:

When I put all entries on the same line, lpc output
looked better but I could still not print.

There is no clue in the /var/log/messages, it just reports that it has
printed. The spool-log file is empty.

I'm using the PNM2PPA driver for Hp720c.

Please help.

Could this be a terminology conflict? They ought to be known as (eg.)

That embedded "a" or "b" is important. fwiw.

Sounds indicative of an xauth problem perhaps. Press ctrl+alt+bkspc and X
will exit and dump you to a prompt. On the console you will probably see
the error message you are getting. In the meantime, you can changed from
runlevel 5 to runlevel 3 while troubleshooting the issue by editing the
/etc/inittab file. As far as how to resolve it, I am unsure. You'd want
to read the xauth manpage and other related information to begin to
troubleshoot.

Seriously, use mount -w (or whatever option works on your system). r/w

(this is a FAQ). WIn95, i.e. vfat, FSs don't have owners and permissions.
It won't let anybody write to it. To change that you have to

a) mount it as a particular users property with "user" as a flag in fstab,
and leave it to automount or mount to load. Try "users" too.

b) chenge the mode on all the files in the partition so that they are writable
by everyone. Again, this is a mount option. Look it up in th eman page.

 umask=value
For the msdos and hpfs file systems, give every file a
umask of value. The radix defaults to octal.

c) mount the partition as type umsdos, and umssync it. That'll add an extra
layer of simulated unix file permissions.

You must export a directory on a nfs server if you want to mount it
from a remote system! You need an appropriate entry in the /etc/exports
file and send a SIGHUP to nfsd and statd.

I recently downloaded an rpm package from the dell site which was for my
sound card, so i can play music and so on in Linux. I run the command
rpm -ivh SBLive.rpm and run the command sndconfig, Linux still did not
detect my sound card, Sound blaster live, is there anyone out there that can
provide me with info on how to get linux to detect my sound card or how to
use this rpm.

thanx in advance

Subject: proxy squid problem
Date: Thu, 23 Mar 2000 11:05:59 +0100

I need to configure the squid2 proxy to redirect every HTTP request to
another proxy, filtering Java content and ActiveX, for security reasons. The
system used is a SuSE Linux 6.3 with squid 2.

I just read the instructions for a such case in the FAQ
(http://www.squid-cache.org/Doc/FAQ/FAQ-4.html#ss4.9), but my problem is
that I need too the possibility for one host - mine -, to bypass this 'next
proxy' for debugging purposes (because sometimes, there are problems caused
by this Java filtering proxy), putting if possible the results in the cache.
I add this because I think that there would be a simple way to achieve this
by telling squid that every request coming for my IP adress must be simply
forwarded.

Any suggestion will be very appreciated.
