OK, I ran LILO from a floppy because the linux partition on my disk falls at
about 12GB, too large for my BIOS to boot to it...
The disk is (physically) buggered. No, I don't have a rescue disk, but I do
have another functioning Linux machine and windows 98 on the machine with
the buggered disk.
I also have a boot disk (unnecessary) for the other machine. The two
machines run (very) different systems, the unbootable one is Redhat 7.0 the
other is Redhat 5 WITHOUT the 2.2.2 kernel update. Is there any way I can
rebuild my LILO disk?
Thanks

Do not confuse hacker with cracker. A hacker, old school, will tell you
every possible way to mess up your box, show you how to plug it and will
not screw with anything you have not given explicit permission to screw
with.

The command
/sbin/lilo -b /dev/fd0
should rebuild your LILO boot diskette

You could also
cd /usr/src/linux
make bzdisk
and get a non-lilo boot diskette

hi folks,
I have a hp pavillion with a 1207 D 10/100 ethernet card. I am unable
to make linux detect the card correctly. I am running red hat 7.1 (i
think it is a 2.4 kernel). I understand that the driver corresponding
to the card is a rtl1839 driver. I use insmod and lsmod to load and
verify if the driver is loaded and it is!. When i try to do an
ifconfig on the card i get the following error.
"SIOCSIFFLAGS: Resource
Temporarily unavailable"
any suggestions. has it got anything to do with the bios set up. I am
using lilo to boot of a floppy. i also have boot magic installed (has
not been configured to detect linux yet.) i have a 19 G disk with
windows 98 running on another partition.
comments and suggestions appreciated.

I am having troubles with unlocking vlock. It accepts the mortal
user password just fine, but it does not accept the root password.
I think the problem is that vlock needs access to /etc/shadow, but
I am reluctant to increase permissions on it (it is currently 400).
I can get around the problem by going root in another console and
killing vlock, but it would be much more simple if root could do it
at its own password prompt in vlock. Is there any other way around
the problem, or is it safe for me to make the permissions on /etc/shadow
440?

Get the redhat install disk. Put it in the machine you need a boot disk
for. at the LILO prompt type
linux root=/dev/hda2 ro
substitute whatever partition your root partition is on for hda2.
Should get you into your system. Then you can make a new boot floppy (see
man lilo for command line options).

/etc/shadow should be readable only by root, so any programs reading
it need root privileges.

So you are reluctant to give vlock root permissions but would chmod

I installed RH 7.1 to try it out, and in the process gave some funky names
to partions in the setup procedure -- e.g. "will-be-usr" -- as original
mount points.
Now I find that strange names are somehow IN THE PARTITION TABLE ?! and
during boot up the fsck displays these names for partitions. (Once booted,
the appropriate names from fstab are used.)
In cfdisk, the odd names are displayed as "LABEL" for ea partition; but I
can't find where to edit.
Any ideas? Thanks.

it's driving me nuts....

Actually, I set this Linux box up here at work. =) No one else here even
really knows what Linux is.
The reason I asked why I asked why is because I'm confused about why
this box works perfectly right out of installation without a .xinitrc
when it sounds as though that file is necessary.
And I'm running as root because I'm having to do installations of
packages left and right so I thought I might as well stay as root. I've
been so busy getting the machine set up right that I haven't had time
yet to study up on user managing enough yet to create another account
for myself that has all the benefits but none of the risks root has.
Thanks for the feedback!

Hi!
I just installed Mandrake 8. It's got some problems, but the first one to
really stump me is this: I can't run any libc5 programs.
(0)diverge@/usr/local/bin% ls -Fla catdoc
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 8136 Nov 19 2000 catdoc*
(0)diverge@/usr/local/bin% ./catdoc
zsh: no such file or directory: ./catdoc
(1)diverge@/usr/local/bin% ldd catdoc
/usr/bin/ldd: ./catdoc: No such file or directory
(1)diverge@/usr/local/bin% ssh gradient "ldd /usr/local/bin/catdoc"
libc.so.5 => /usr/i486-linux-libc5/lib/libc.so.5 (0x4000e000)
(0)diverge@/usr/local/bin% rpm -q libc5
libc5-5.4.38-3
(0)diverge@/usr/local/bin%
Yes, I've added /usr/i486-linuxlibc5/lib to /etc/ld.so.conf and run
ldconfig, which knows it's there.
Any other suggestions?

Have installed SuSE 7.0 (Pro version). Standard install appears to
have
installed Apache and PHP. Doing a 'rpm -q -i apache' says that
apache has been installed with the PHP4 module, so I would think that
PHP should be available.... However, when we try to 'browse' a
xxx.php file, the browser tries to offer to download the file (as type
x-httpd-php) , rather than it being 'executed' on the server.
We did copy the php.ini to /usr/local/lib and verified that the
appropriate AddType commands are in httpd.conf.
What are we missing?
