While we can argue about how standard functions like putenv() are,
_this_ method clearly and blatantly violates the ISO C standard, and
thus I feel it's by far the least portable, and least desirable, way of
dealing with environment variables.
Avoid it.

I am also a little miffed by this install. You are saying they have 1 NIC,
and that is it and want to do IP masq.
I agree with previous. Get another NIC, set it up the correct way. Even
better, get a third NIC, will throw hackers off from the outside...

I don't think you'll need any specific drivers. The readme (check it out) for
cdrecord (which is what xcdroast is a front-end for) says the Memorex cr-1622
is compatible with the cdrecord. Should work. I have a ricoh (scsi) and it
works fine.

This sort of thing is specific to the file-manager type application you're

Try looking at the logfiles in /var/log to see if there are any clues
there. Probably some PAM object isn't there or is unhappy.

for one thing, the init string below won't work because you MUST escape any
ampersands "&" with a backslash character, eg:
ATS71=1S80=1\&D2
I don't have any experience with the IQ and Linux, although I do own an IQ and
have used it extensively with DUN and Win98. Currently, I have an Motorola
BitSurfr PRO hooked up to a 2.1.130 Linux box and it works great with both
channels. It took some diddling to get it to work at 230K, but eventually I
figured it out.
Are you sure that your ISP will allow a 2B connection for your account?
(Stupid question, but I had to ask....). If you haven't setup with them for
2B ISDN, they will usually nuke the second channel as soon as it tries to
authenticate.

Hi
I recently upgraded from 2.0.34 to 2.2.0. Now when I run X, I get some
error messages:
_X11TransSocketOpen: socket() failed for local
_X11TransSocketOpenCOTSClient: unable to open socket
_X11TransOpen: transport open failed for local/Bob:0
It says the above quite a few times, and then it gives me:
xinit: Invalied argument (errno 22): unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error
What do I need to do with my new kernel. Is there something I should
include in the build to eliminate these problems? I'm using XFree 3.3.3 and
Slackware 3.5(libc5)
Thanks much

This is not a Linux problem at all: the answer depends on the application
you want to use to 'click on the file' (file manager, desktop environement..).
You should be more precise to get any useful help :-)

I was just talking to a Novell person about this yesterday. We probably
won't see a NWADMIN for Linux, but the Java-based Console utility in Netware
5 is just an X-server and will probably do what we want it to. Right now it
is not mature enough to do it, though.
Sounds promising, though.

Hi
I'm having trouble with masquerading in 2.2.1 (I've upgraded from
2.0.36, from a system running Slackware 3.3).
The basic setup is that I have a linux machine (192.168.0.2) on a LAN
with several other machines, one of them 192.168.0.1 (running windoze
98). I want to let that machine share the ppp connection. I've compiled
masquerading into the kernel, along with the other stuff it requires.
I've set the gateway to 192.168.0.2 on '98 machine.
Here's an extract from my rc.local
ipchains -F input
ipchains -F output
ipchains -F forward
ipchains -P input ACCEPT
ipchains -P output ACCEPT
ipchains -P forward ACCEPT
#anti-spoofing
ipchains -A input -s 127.0.0.1 -i ! lo -j DENY
ipchains -A input -s 192.168.0.2 -i lo -j ACCEPT
ipchains -A input -s 192.168.0.0/24 -i ! eth0 -j DENY
# masquerading
ipchains -A forward -s 192.168.0.0/24 -j MASQ
# enable routing
echo "1" > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
ipchains -C forward ... confirms that the packets should be forwarded
(so far it's only been tested on email checks with POP3), but nothing
appears to be happening.
Any ideas?
Thanks

Jupp, it does use 4 & 3. But, if I boot NT4 on the box, using the same
jumpers as for Linux, NT4 is able to set the COM3/4 irq's in such a way
that the ports work. And these irq's cannot be 4 and 3....
Therefore, AFAIK, the board can use other irq's than 4 & 3 on COM3 & 4,
as COM1 & COM2 still uses irq 4 & 3 I would guess.
But, anyway, it could be a good idea to check the board to see if there
is a jumper for setting the irq's, I'll do that.

RedHat Linux uses .rpm packages for updating. You need to locate these.
RedHat has recently put out an update for X. I'm using it, it's good.
Go to www.redhat.com and look into support - errata
If you are running 2.0.34 or greater then you can directly read
FAT32 partitions from Linux (read and write). You need to modify
your fstab file to include your Windoze partitions.

Here, here! I have spent a large amount of time administering systems and I
can say that working with Loose95 is like an anal root canal.
Working with 'doze drivers is horrible. Nothing like having to restart a
system five times to get a damn network card working properly (as far as
'doze goes).
Then comes software administration. One system is easy, plug the disk in and
wait for it to autorun with a little trail of drool trailing down your
face. Now try that with 50 systems, 100 systems. You'll get sick of that
f%$&ing bouncy icon crap fast.
Then there's that awsome Windoze reliability. Nothing makes a system
'easier' to use than general protection faults every five seconds.
Win95 might be easy for a single user (who doesn't know Linux), but it's an
administrative nightmare.

Subject: NEED HELP WITH RH5.2 NETWORKING???
Date: 9 Feb 1999 03:09:54 GMT
Need help in a bad way. Network in Linux is flaking out.
Here's the problem I boot up my RH5.2 linux on a NEC versa
6050MX notebook with Xircom 10/100 ethernet card. Machine
boots fine. Then I add the necessary route commands to add
a route to the Internet (thru my isp) and default gateway.
run a few tests basically pinging things from the linux box
to make sure its operating. I have a home network of 2 win95
machines and this linux box. The home network is 1.1.1.0 I have
NAT running on the isdn router so these addresses never see the
internet. My isp gave me address x.x.x.x which is live and everything
works fine for the win95 machines. The ping test I run from the linux
box pings a another local machine on the 1.1.1.0 network then the router
itself at 1.1.1.1 then the Internet side of the router at x.x.x.x then
another machine out on the Internet. Every thing appears fine, then at
some time within the next hour the linux box quites talking to the network.
I can't ping it from any other workstation nor can i ping anything from it.
I can run netstat -rn but route usually just hangs after listing the first
route, I have to hit ctrl-c to get out of route. I have to reboot before
route will work properly again. I have disabled routed for troubleshooting
purposes but this doesn't appear to fix anything. I still get link on the
adapter and I see no other problems with the system other than this.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thanks.

Hi all,
I just came across a site that says that they've got a product that
allows you to run the IBM OS/360, OS/370, OS/390, MVS, VSE and its
applications such as DB2 along with talk to the hardware I/O by using
an IBM instruction set emulator running on top of Unix. This allows
all the IBM products to run right out of the box on top of Unix. The
hardware can be emulated, i.e. IBM s/w thinks it talking to a nine track
tape drive which really behind the scenes is a DLT or DAT. The same
goes for DASD and terminals. Now if you really don't want to throw
out your old hardware, then the company also sells a PCI circuit card
that via a Unix driver will actually communicate in the hardware/software
protocol to those physical hardware devices.
The software has a limitation though.
They can't do sysplex or ESCON. Nor can they emulate the instructions
that do compression or encryption (I guess due to not knowing the
algorithms that IBM uses).
Moreover, since Unix allows multiple processes, you could run multiple
IBM OS' simultaneously that may be different versions or lets say
OS/360 along with OS/390 simultaneously.
The company has performance tested it agains't IBMS proprietary circuit
card that you would plug into the PC that would run the IBM s/w and
they have been able to get the same performance of 7MIPs and the I/O
is 3-4 times faster than IBMs.This spec was done on a Dell 2300 server
which is a dual pentium 400mhz machine whereby one processor ran the
emulation and the other did the I/O.
They s/w currently runs on the following Unixes,
Dynix for Sequent www.sequent.com all intel hardware
SCO Unix
DG/UX for Data General
Now it's just one hop, skip and jump away from Linux (if you use the
IBCS libs to run SCO applications). Perhaps a s/w project could be
started to develop an IBM mainframe emulator for LINUX? :) This
would be similar to the guy in Israel that is porting Linux to the IBM AS/400.
The company also makes emulators for the Bull and Unisys mainframes too.
The companies site is http://www.funsoft.com Fundamental S/w in CA, USA
The software product is FLEX-ES.
Now to get a start for the RISC chip instruction set emulation, a person
did one for their grad project project it is called SPIM.
See http://www.cs.princeton.edu/~appel/modern/spim
which has links to the actual site at Univ Wisconsin. THe MIPs emulator
is for the R2000/R3000 processor but probably can be updated for the R4000
and above.
Are there anymore hardware instruction set emulators out there for
other processors such as the Motorola 6800x, Z80, the Dec Alpha and
HP chips?

I haven't used it a lot, but I don't recall it ever crashing on me under
Linux.
As for Java, you need to understand that Java programs are more or less
cross-platform. The _Java Virtual Machines_ are not. There's quite a
difference there. That really is what Sun is giving out, virtual
machines for the different platforms. It's already nice that they give
you a Windows one, when they are competing against Windows in a way.
They are also supporting the Linux java porting project from what I
understand. They can't be expected to port the JVM to every possible
architecture. What they've done is put forth the standard for the JVM
and binaries hoping that people would port the JVM to their platform so
that the Java binaries _can_ be cross-platform. What they are doing is
quite normal and reasonable. At least they have put forth the Windows
version, so we don't need to get it from Microsoft!

There are several emulators for the old 8-bit CPUs (Z80, 6502)
that are mostly used for emulating old hardware like the C64, Apple-II
etc.
One would be the VICE emulator, emulating a line of old Commodore 8-bit
machines. See

Subject: HELP: Lost data on a zip disk?
Date: Mon, 08 Feb 1999 22:12:11 -0600
I was upgrading from redhat 5.1 to 5.2....Kernel 2.0.34 to 2.0.36 i
believe. I backed up all the files i needed and put them on a zip
disk. I previously had some windows files on this zip disk, but I
erased them and copied my files from linux. I noticed that after I did
this if I went into windows I could still see the old files that I
copied there from windows?!? I then rebooted back to linux and could
see the files that I copied from Linux??? I thought that this was
strange so I removed all the files and copied them back to the zip
disk....I then copied them from the zip disk back to my hard drive and
untarred/unzipped them and they seemed to be fine, so I thought this was
a quirk with windows. (The zip disk was formated with fat16 however.)
After I had redhat 5.2 installed I went to copy my files off of the zip
disk and the old windows files were all I could see!!! Does anyone have
any idea what happened? Is there anyway I can get the files back? I
noticed that in /etc/fstab it now has vfat for a type when it used to be
ms-dos.....changing it back to ms-dos tells me that the kernel does not
support that type. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
Thanks,
Buck
PS Please email and post so I can get this fixed ASAP!!!

Try to look at your
/var/log/messages
file.
There should be something like:
Feb 8 12:13:21 hostname pppd[603]: Couldn't initialize modem.
I think you are not allowed to use the modem device as any other user than
"root"
In order to use the modem, the user must be in group
uucp
Hope it'll work with that...
Greetings,
Christian
