Can't you also turn it on using Linuxconf?

In your ~/.bashrc (if you are using bash), add the line

export QTDIR=/usr/local/qt

Whatever shell you're using, it's a good idea to take a look at the man
page:

man bash
man tcsh
man ksh
man csh

I use a script so I don't have to remember. It contains:
#!/bin/sh
fdformat /dev/fd0
mkfs -t msdos /dev/fd0
mount /mnt/floppy

Did I say anything about expecting anyone to reboot? I told the OP how to
make the change permanent. Perhaps you like to do a manual ifconfig on all
of your interfaces and have no permanent configuration, also. If you had
paid the least attention, you would have seen the instruction to effect the
change RIGHT NOW.

Daniel Gordini's lxm3200 driver has been incorporated into Gimp-Print
(stp), and it should be mostly operational in Gimp-Print 4.1.7.

Your English is fine. I'm from Tennessee and know many people who do
not have your grasp of it. As long as you can communicate, don't worry
about how perfect it is.

Okay, you just want to mirror?

try

mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt
cd /; tar clf - .|(cd /mnt; tar xfBp -)

Let that run. It'll create a mirror without stepping onto filesystems
mounted onto root.

you can just pass these things as command line parameters and configuration
options in .netrc, (see man ftp for more) for example:

<q>
#!/bin/sh

HOST="192.168.0.1"
USER="eric"
PASS="eric"

ftp ftp://$USER:$PASS@$HOST
</q>

will log you in to the specified host using the specified username and
password (see man 7 url)

as another example, my .netrc contains lines not dissimilar to the
following...

<q>
machine upload.ntlworld.com
        login sam.penny
        password asdfghjkl

default
        login anonymous
        password a@b
</q>

which lets me just do "ftp upload.ntlworld.com" or "ftp mirror.ac.uk" and
it'll just log me in nicely :)

To download files, consider using wget, which will do it all automagically,
for example:

wget ftp://eric:[EMAIL PROTECTED]/~eric/stuff/a.file

it is possible to get similar results with things like

echo -e "cd ~eric/stuff \n get a.file \n quit" |  \
   ftp ftp://eric:[EMAIL PROTECTED]/~eric/stuff/a.file

but it's neater with wget :)

incidentally, does anyone know if there such a thing as wput? I think there
should be, I might have a poke at trying to write it if nobody else has
already done so :)

err, did you change the detected geometry of the hdd without re-installing
linux? (you'll have to re-partition, re-format, re-install)

if this is the case, my advice is to change it back, backup everything you
want to keep, then start from scratch...

OTOH, I would like to stress that the only time I've ever had fsck find any
errors on any of my machines is when (a) I've had a powerdown situation
without propperly unmounting a filesystem, and not a lot of problems even
then, mostly, or (b) when I've had flaky hardware (which is more often than
not the reason for (a)!) I've _never_ had a propperly unmounted (hard drive)
filesystem come up with errors except shortly before the hard drive died
altogether (actually, come to think of it, the same goes for floppies, but
they die a lot more often ;) YMMV

or use the tune2fs utility to change the number. (I prefer your solution,
though, uptime 53 days, two minutes and counting! I'm actually delaying
upgrading some of the hardware until it's really necessary, just so I can
improve my uptime :)

sheesh, you really need to learn to spell "you"

Also, there are X servers available for other OSen, for example eXceed by
HummingBird (I _think_ I have the cases right there...) and I'm sure there
are many others, probably even some free ones (eXceed isn't free, AFAIK)

which you use depends on network bandwidth and where your spare CPU cycles
reside (vnc uses more bandwidth and the server gets the CPU hit, remote X
uses less bandwidth (especially if you use the compressed X protocol) and
shifts some of the CPU hit to the client)
